"Life Among the Aryans" by Ishmael Reed - Nuyorican Poets Cafe
Through June 24, 2018 - NEW YORK CITY

"Life Among the Aryans" by Ishmael Reed is a political satire that envisions a future when the downtrodden of the Alt Right realize they'd be better off Black. The play imagines an America when the political pendulum has swung way back. Now the president is Jewish and the head of the FBI is a Black woman, presenting such a nightmare to the far right that they now miss the president they called The Muslim King. The government has enacted reparations to Black Americans for the unpaid labor of their ancestors. This inspires envy and desperation among impecunious members of the Alt-Right. But it also inspires them to a new, uproarious strategy of "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em." The play offers us a cunning satire of White class consciousness. With wordplay and irony, the play reminds us how nowadays, red state ideologues have enthusiastically elected their own exploiters, making them share with Black America the butt end of the economy. In Ishmael Reed's traditional style, every character is a clown. Latin Jazz Big Band Night featuring: The Bronx Conexión - Nuyorican Poets Café
July 10, 2018 - Manhattan

The Bronx Conexión is a driving 20-piece Latin-Jazz Big Band lead by drummer/ percussionist, Victor Rendón. The ensemble, with its home base at Lehman College, brings a group of veteran musicians with a wide variety of experience in the field. The Bronx Conexión keeps the tradition of Tito Puente, Machito, Mario Bauza, among others, with it's own rendition of popular tunes as well as original compositions and arrangements by various members in the band. Admission: $10 general admission/$7 with Student ID at the door/$25 two tickets plus two drinks

WORDS was created by Rocky LaMontagne & Bobbito the Barber to give young up-and-coming poets & emcees the opportunity to showcase their work to an audience of their peers. This showcase and open mic has featured Company Flow, Canibus, Mos Def, M.C. Search, Willie Perdomo, Saul Williams, and Suheir Hammad, among others. The open mic gives new artists a chance to perform in front of an audience.
