Control the Color of the One World Trade Center Spire at a Free Brooklyn Party

Have you ever wanted to control the colors on a New York skyscraper? As part of the centennial celebrations for the National Park Service, now’s your chance. On Monday, August 22nd, head to Brooklyn Bridge Park for a #FindYourPark event featuring live music, family-friendly activities, and appearances by Bill Nye and Questlove.

As for lighting up a New York spire, visitors will collaborate on a giant digital circuit board to shade the top of One World Trade Center—the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. Through working together to solve interactive puzzles they’ll get to impact one of the prime icons of the New York sky. “As we celebrate the centennial of the National Park Service this month, illuminating the Manhattan skyline reflects this innovative, progressive American spirit and lights the way for the National Park Service as we enter our second century of service," said Jonathan B. Jarvis, Director of the NPS.

The event at Brooklyn Bridge Park will take place 1pm to 10pm. The events begin with an ice cream social with the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory (1:30-3:30pm), followed by kid-friendly music of Ramblin’ Dan performing live (2-4pm). A second, surprise musical performance will follow (5:45-6:45pm). An hour later hear special opening remarks from Bill Nye, joined by U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell. The evening will conclude with a guest DJ set from The Tonight Show’s Questlove.

Along the way, find family-friendly activities like sand art, corn hole, temporary tattoos, games, prizes, learning stations, and a special "Smart Parks Game Jam" that teaches the basics of game design and insight into the ways games can inspire civic and environmental engagement.

To attend this event, people should enter at Old Fulton and Furman Streets. The park is located along the East River in Brooklyn, mostly south of the Brooklyn Bridge. It is accessible by train, bus, and ferry. For more information, visit brooklynbridgepark.org.
