Death - Poisson Rouge
April 21, 2019 - New York

(Le) Poisson Rouge is a multimedia art cabaret founded by musicians on the site of the historic Village Gate. Dedicated to the fusion of popular and art cultures in music, film, theater, dance, and fine art, the venue's mission is to revive the symbiotic relationship between art and revelry; to establish a creative asylum for both artists and audiences. Under the moniker LPR Presents, the venue expands its vision for the listener's experience by cultivating unique performances beyond the venue's four walls, throughout the NYC area in rooms small and large.

Adrienne Unae - Broadway Comedy Club
April 21, 2019 - New York

Just as things start getting a little weird, become the eaves dropping visitors of a pinned-up Nun, Oscar winner, tailor, magician, club owner, and only God knows who else. In this interactive and immersive show, folks come up missing and it is up to everyone to defend themselves by setting up alibis in order to cover their tracks. How'd this malarky of a motley crew come about anyway? Who cares. All you want is to be told you are free to go so you can leave the guilty party behind. But wait! Just because you MIGHT get out doesn't necessarily mean you're innocent. Hmmm. Could you be the saboteur? Could you help solve the heinous crime(s)? Will the entire evening be a mystery? With this fast-paced hilarious one woman show, mayhem is the appetizer, madness the main course and critical thinking is served up a la carte! Ticket sales support Adrienne Unae's mission work in NYC, Ft. Lauderdale, and Kenya. BTW, the ticket price is too low to be refundable. LOL

Refiguring Binaries - Pioneer Works
April 21, 2019 - Brooklyn

In recent years, the contours of a new contemporary art movement have begun to emerge, forged in reaction to the ideologies of Silicon Valley, the platforming and globalization of culture, and technologies of power like artificial intelligence, photorealistic computer-generated images, and virtual and augmented reality. These "Simulists" simultaneously embrace and subvert technology as their means of interrogation–expressing humanist, nonbinary, and decolonized futures. Curated by Kelani Nichole and featuring works by Morehshin Allahyari, LaTurbo Avedon, Meriem Bennani, Snow Yunxue Fu, Claudia Hart, Faith Holland, Lorna Mills, Eva Papamargariti, Tabita Rezaire, and Lu Yang, the exhibition explores identity, the body, and the politics of technology. Virtual space is inhabited with queer bodies and cultural identity is reclaimed through subversive uses of technology. The boundaries of technology and the body are blurred, as are the lines between author, image, and copy. Possible futures emerge as the layers of simulation that mediate contemporary culture are revealed.

Alejandro Piñeiro Bello, Jose Capaz, And Fabelohung - Pioneer Works
April 21, 2019 - Brooklyn

Tribuna Antimperialista was the site of a long-term propaganda battle in the late 1990s between the Cuban government and the United States Interests Section, Havana (USINT), which was situated in a building across the street from the square. In 2006, the United States installed a five-feet high ticker tape display across the top floor of the building which broadcast messages and quotes from Martin Luther King Jr. and other cultural figures such as the comedian George Burns, who once remarked: "How sad that all the people who would know how to run this country are driving taxis or cutting hair." The Cuban government responded by erecting the monument Monte de las Banderas, or Wall of Flags, out of one hundred fifty flags to commemorate "victims of US aggression" and to partially block the ticker. At Pioneer Works, En El Monte evokes this square with an installation of flagpoles, onto which virtual reality headsets are attached.

April 25, 2019 - Brooklyn

All new stage play starring Cassie Davis, Tamela and David Mann and Tyler Perry. Tyler Perry's inspirational journey from the hard streets of New Orleans to the heights of Hollywood's A-list is the stuff of American legend. Born into poverty and raised in a household scarred by abuse, Perry fought from a young age to find the strength, faith and perseverance that would later form the foundations of his much-acclaimed plays, films, books and shows. It was a simple piece of advice from Oprah Winfrey that set Perry's career in motion. Encouraged to keep a diary of his daily thoughts and experiences, he began writing a series of soul-searching letters to himself. The letters, full of pain and in time, forgiveness, became a healing catharsis. His writing inspired a musical, I Know I've Been Changed, and in 1992, Perry gathered his life's savings in hopes of staging it for sold out crowds. He spent all the money but the people never came, and Perry once again came face to face with the poverty that had plagued his youth. He spent months sleeping in seedy motels and his car but his faith - in God and, in turn, himself - only got stronger. He forged a powerful relationship with the churc... (read more)

Book Discussion: The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah - Brooklyn Public Library - Bay Ridge Branch
April 25, 2019 - Brooklyn

THE GREAT ALONE, by Kristin Hannah "Ernt Allbright, a former POW, comes home from the Vietnam war a changed and volatile man. When he loses yet another job, he makes an impulsive decision: he will move his family north, to Alaska, where they will live off the grid in America's last true frontier. Thirteen-year-old Leni, a girl coming of age in a tumultuous time, caught in the riptide of her parents' passionate, stormy relationship, dares to hope that a new land will lead to a better future for her family. Her mother, Cora, will do anything and go anywhere for the man she loves, even if it means following him into the unknown. At first, Alaska seems to be the answer to their prayers. In a wild, remote corner of the state, they find a fiercely independent community of strong men and even stronger women. The long, sunlit days and the generosity of the locals make up for the Allbrights' lack of preparation and dwindling resources. But as winter approaches and darkness descends on Alaska, Ernt's fragile mental state deteriorates and the family begins to fracture. In their small cabin, covered in snow, blanketed in eighteen hours of night, Leni and her mother learn the terrible truth... (read more)

Tyler Perry's Madea's Farewell Play Tour - Kings Theatre
April 26, 2019 - Brooklyn

He forged a powerful relationship with the church, and kept writing. In 1998 his perseverance paid off and a promoter booked I Kno... (read more)

St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble: Mendelssohn the Prodigy - Brooklyn Museum

Felix Mendelssohn was already recognized as a child prodigy when he composed his Octet for Strings, one of his best known and most frequently performed works, at the age of sixteen. In this program, the Octet for Strings is paired with another work composed in the early years of Mendelssohn's prolific career, the rarely heard Violin Concerto in D Minor. Written when Mendelssohn was only thirteen, the obscure work was rediscovered in the early 1950s and is firmly rooted in the three-movement classical concerto form. Together, these two works showcase the depth of the young Mendelssohn's extraordinary talent.

Tyler Perry's Madea's Farewell Play Tour - Kings Theatre
Through April 28, 2019 - Brooklyn

Tyler Perry's inspirational journey from the hard streets of New Orleans to the heights of Hollywood's A-list is the stuff of American legend. Born into poverty and raised in a household scarred by abuse, Perry fought from a young age to find the strength, faith and perseverance that would later form the foundations of his much-acclaimed plays, films, books and shows. It was a simple piece of advice from Oprah Winfrey that set Perry's career in motion. He spent all the money but the people never came, and Perry once again came face to face with the poverty that had plagued his youth.
