You'd have to be able to recall the Harlem Renaissance to say that the vibe of Village Spotlight at the Duplex with Darius Frowner seems familiar. It's an evening reminiscent of those legendary rent parties of the '20s, when working performers and talented amateurs would cluster in vintage parlors purely for the pleasure of making music and keeping the landlord quiet. Everything from Gershwin to the Beatles and Hamilton is fair game here, all of it crafted into a one-time-only musical revue created on the spot by ringmaster Frowner. Can you drop more money to hear singers flaunt their range at venues around the city? Absolutely. But you won't have a better time. —KEVIN PHINNEY
