2020 Flushing Sacred Sites Virtual Tour
Due to the coronavirus, please call to ensure this event is still happening before you leave home.
Queens is the most diverse county in the United States. With nearly half of the 2.3 million residents born abroad, its neighborhoods are home to families that hail from over 120 countries and speak over 135 languages. On Saturday, August 8, 2020, visitors will learn more about the sacred sites that highlight Flushing’s religious diversity.
As the site of North America’s first proclamation of religious freedom — the Flushing Remonstrance of 1657, and the oldest extant house of worship in New York State — the Quaker Meeting House of 1694, Flushing is now the area of many new churches, temples, and mosques due to both a surge in the needs of contemporary immigrants and the availability of sizable plots of land in once-elite residential areas. We’ll discuss the ecological and economic problems engendered by the new churches as well as the uncertain status of historic religious institutions.
The first virtual stop on our tour will be the Quaker Meeting House (built in 1694). We’ll end the virtual tour with The Hindu Temple (Hindu Temple Society of North America), which is the first authentic Hindu temple in the country. The structure was designed in accordance with the Agama Sastras (ancient scriptures relating to temple building) and completed early in 1977.
We will also mention a number of remarkable new and older houses of worship including the Ebeneezer Baptist Church, St. George Episcopal Church, Chinese Buddhist Temple, Flushing Free Synagogue, St Michael Catholic Church, First Baptist Church, Kissena Jewish Center, Boon Church Of Overseas Chinese Mission, and many more.
About the Tour Guide The Tour will be led by Queens historian Jason Antos, QHS Board President and author of books on Shea Stadium, Whitestone, Flushing, Queens, Jackson Heights, and his latest The History of Douglaston/Little Neck.
143-35 37th Avenue, Kingsland Homestead
