Put on your walking shoes with Downtown Stories, a series of theatrical pieces by some of New York’s most inventive artists as they embark on uncovering the stories embodied by the people that live and work in the oldest neighborhood in New York City. It’s art meets anthropological expedition as these artists discover new or little-known facts about downtown that become a springboard for inventive storytelling that provides a fresh perspective on the city that surrounds us.

Downtown Stories will take place Wednesdays through Saturdays from June 8 – 25, 2022. Tickets for the documentary theater piece will be free and tickets for the walking tours will be combined with the purchase of a food voucher that supports a local restaurant. Reservations are required for all performances and will open on May 4.

By Rogelio Martinez Directed by Johanna McKeon John Street Methodist Church (44 John Street)

How many steps does it take to transform your life? Inspired by interviews with real New Yorkers, Nine Steps to Making a Shoe invites us into the world of Lower Manhattan’s small, independent business owners. It traces their journeys to New York City and the pathways they’ve taken to survive in the unpredictable world of NYC’s oldest neighborhood. Weaving together history, fact, and fiction, Nine Steps to Making a Shoe details the remarkable choices that everyday people must make to reinvent their circumstances, and in turn themselves, against all odds.

The performance schedule for Nine Steps to Making a Shoe is Wednesdays-Fridays at 8pm and Saturdays at 3pm. The Saturday June 25 performance will take place at 8pm. The Saturday 3pm performances will be ADA compliant performances.

Walking Tour A By Mona Monsour Co-Conceived and directed by Jessica Holt

When an out-of-work Downtown performance artist takes a job leading a Hamilton! Walking Tour even further Downtown, she is prepared to give the standard tour about the trendiest Founding Father. But when an unexpected fork in the road presents a path not taken, she can’t help but follow it. Join our Further Downtown Guide on Uncovering Downtown: A Magical Expedition of Unrecorded Dreams for a magical expedition of unrecorded dreams, as she uncovers the secrets contained within the oldest streets in New York and reveals the New York you always knew, or wanted to know.

Walking Tour A will begin at 12:30pm and 5:30pm Wednesday-Saturday and departs from Trinity Church (89 Broadway).

Walking Tour B

By Eric Lockley Developed and directed by Morgan Green

Innovation, transformation, change...sometimes it arrives as a whisper, sometimes as a forbidden kiss and other times as a startling BANG! This is the foundation of New York City - according to the ghosts who have lived through it. Whether it be the ghost of a little boy or a Revolutionary War soldier in jail, Sweet Exchange will guide us through Lower Manhattan’s streets to examine how agents of change have always been the foundation of this land, this country, of the city, and of the hearts and minds of the people who inhabit it.

Walking Tour B will begin at 1:00pm and 6:00pm Wednesday-Saturday and departs from Trinity Church (89 Broadway).

Venue: Lower Manhattan
