This exhibition takes a closer look at the top ten breeds, examines their histories, and speculates what exactly about them captures the hearts and minds of so many Americans. For some, it has to do with the breed’s temperament. For others, it is their work ethic, or their association with pop culture and movies. Often it is a combination of all these factors!
Of course, every dog is the most popular in their owner’s eyes. This list is not an indication of quality of different breeds, as every dog has aspects that make it perfect for somebody. It is also important to remember that just because a breed is popular, it does not mean that breed is a good fit for every family. It is essential to look at a particular dog’s needs when acquiring a pet and determine if those needs line up with yours.
The breeds featured in this exhibition are the Labrador Retriever, French Bulldog, German Shepherd Dog, Golden Retriever, Bulldog, Poodle, Beagle, Rottweiler, German Shorthaired Pointer, and Dachshund. Some of these breeds are veterans of the most popular list, such as the Lab, which has held the number one spot for 30 years straight. Others are more recent movers and shakers, such as the French Bulldog, which took the number two spot this year for the first time.
