Not Just For Nooks & Netflix Anymore: Grisham’s A Time to Kill Comes to The Great White Way

When it comes to best-selling genres, John Grisham is to jurisprudence what Stephen King is to horror: prolific and prone to cinematic spinoffs. Now, finally, one of Grisham’s most potent courtroom dramas is coming to Broadway, and New York theatregoers are in for this season’s most spellbinding ride.

“For almost a quarter of a century, A Time to Kill has captivated readers with its raw exploration of race, retribution and justice. It was my first book and the first that I have allowed to be adapted for the theatre,” says Grisham the script. Penned by Tony Award-winning playwright Rupert Holmes, it does a stellar job of “translating [the novel] from the page to the stage... I am happy that not only my loyal readers, but a whole new audience will be able to experience this story in live theatre. I am looking forward to opening night on Broadway!”

Starring a collection of exceptional actors — including film and TV veteran Tom Skerritt, Fred Dalton Thompson (Law & Order), Patrick Page (Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark), Tony winner Tonya Pinkins (Caroline or Change) and Sebastian Arcelus (House of Cards) — A Time to Kill is currently in previews at the John Golden Theatre (252 W. 45th St.) with an official opening set for Sunday, October 20th.

Tony nominee Ethan McSweeny (Gore Vidal’s The Best Man) directs.

Producers Daryl Roth and Eva Price had this to say about their latest dramatic project: “John Grisham’s endlessly gripping, perfectly plotted storytelling is so well suited for the live theater, and we are thrilled to be bringing this first-ever stage adaptation of one his novels to Broadway. Rupert Holmes has written an adaptation that masterfully replicates for theatergoers the page-turning thrill of reading a Grisham novel, while also honoring the powerful intimacy of its exploration of the injustices of our not-so-distant past. We look forward to audiences of all ages experiencing its essential message of equality, justice, and compassion for all.”
