Moroni: The Riches of Renaissance Portraiture - The Frick Collection
Through April 14, 2019 - New York

Moroni: The Riches of Renaissance Portraiture is the first major exhibition in the United States to focus on the portraiture of Giovanni Battista Moroni (1520/24–1579/80). A painter of portraits and religious subjects, Moroni is celebrated as an essential figure in the northern Italian tradition of naturalistic painting that includes Leonardo da Vinci, the Carracci, and Caravaggio. This exhibition, shown exclusively at The Frick Collection, brings to light the innovation of the artist, whose role in a larger history of European portraiture has yet to be fully explored. His famous Tailor (National Gallery, London), for example, anticipates by decades the "narrative" portraits of Rembrandt, and his Pace Rivola Spini (Accademia Carrara, Bergamo), arguably the first independent full-length portrait of a standing woman produced in Italy, prefigures the many women that Van Dyck would paint in this format in the following century.

Knafel — the finest collection of French faience in private hands — to tell the fascinating and complex history of this particular art form. Over the next two centuries, production spread throughout the provinces of metropolitan France. The fine decoration of French faience draws inspiration from multiple sources, including Italian maiolica, Asian porcelain, and contemporary engravings. The forms of its platters, bowls, plates, and ewers derive mostly from European ceramics and silver. These influences come together in works of great originality.

Archduke Rudolph: Beethoven’s Pupil and Patron - Bohemian National Hall
April 17, 2019 - New York

Ignat Solzhenitsyn, piano Korbinian Altenberger, violin Na-Young Baek, cello Illustrated talk by Ignat Solzhenitsyn PROGRAM Beethoven Violin Sonata No.10 in G major, Op.96 Beethoven Piano Trio in B-flat major, Op. 97 “Archduke” The most significant of Beethoven’s noble patrons during his years in Vienna was Archduke Rudolph of Austria, youngest brother of the Emperor Franz. Beethoven began teaching Rudolph piano in around 1803–04, and the archduke later became his sole composition student. He was also the only one of his patrons whose financial support continued uninterrupted until the composer’s death. Beethoven generally scorned aristocrats, but it appears his relationship with Rudolph was different. In the composer’s own words, the archduke treated him ‘like a friend, not a servant’. Beethoven dedicated fifteen of his most important works to Rudolph (more than to any other individual), including the Fourth and Fifth Piano Concertos and, following the archduke’s appointment as a cardinal and then as Archbishop of Olmütz in 1819, the Missa solemnis. In this programme we present two of the chamber works dedicated to him – the Violin Sonata in G major, Op. 96 and the ‘Arc... (read more)

"Americana" - Tambaran 2 Gallery
Through May 11, 2019 - New York

Tambaran 2 Gallery and The TAX Collection are pleased to present 'Americana' - a solo exhibition by New York artist Kevin Champeny. Opening April 11th, Champeny's latest exhibition explores current issues in America including: politics, mental health, gun violence, beauty, social media and drugs. The work will be on display at The Tambaran2 Gallery on 82nd street, just steps from The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Champeny reinvents the traditional mosaic with his sculpted, cast and hand placed pieces creating an interactive platform. He encourages the work to be viewed from both up close and far away, allowing the observer to derive meaning from its juxtaposition. Champeny states “Mosaics enable me to elicit the tension and stories between hand sculpted and cast pixels and the overall image they compose. I want my art to open a conversation for the viewer. I hope people discovering and viewing my pieces will connect their own experiences to the choices I made when creating the work”.
