Mashing up a contemporary idiom with newly translated sections of Racine’s tragedy, PATHETIC challenges us to identify with truly excessive emotion, and giggle and squirm as we watch U.S. America’s grownups devour their young. Written and directed by Julia Jarcho and designed by Ásta Bennie Hostetter, Jenny Seastone, and Ben Williams.

Dear Brutus - Studio 54 @ Shetler Studios
Through June 23, 2019 - New York

Seeped in the climate of despondency and decadence following the First World War, missed opportunities are seized by a group of wastrels and aristocrats in the form of languorous, directionless celebration, meant to combat the pervasive melancholy of a dubious future and the horrors of battle. Dear Brutus is set in a phantom time of splendid decay, diffident exuberance, and newfound introspection. It finds our group haunted by roads not taken and lives not lived. The play by J.M. Barrie is an adult companion piece to his Peter Pan and provides our characters the magical do-over they yearn for. Just like that, thanks to a magic wood, lives are altered; fate reversed. But alas, the grass isn’t always greener.

It’s always been about the voice for Shanice. Boasting a five-octave range, which she handles with beauty and ease, Shanice began her career scatting with the late great legendary Ella Fitzgerald for Kentucky Fried Chicken at the tender age of 8 years old. At age of eleven, she would be discovered by John McClain, of A&M records as she performed in the musical “Get Happy”, the music of Harold Arlen, at the Westwood Playhouse. She went on to become the grand champion of Star Search that same year. Her first album, “Discovery” on the A&M label, released when Shanice was just fourteen, would garner two urban hits, “Can You Dance?” and “No Half Stepping”. It was her worldwide smash, I Love Your Smile, a number one pop hit in twenty two countries, which would bring her a Grammy nomination, Germany’s Golden Lion Award and international stardom at the age of eighteen! Shanice would become the very first recording artist to perform on the “Tonight Show” with Jay Leno.
