July 17, 2019 - New York

2019. UK. 85 min. Phil Grabsky Pablo Picasso is one of the greatest artists of all time – and right up until his death in 1973 he was the most prolific of artists. Many films have dealt with these later years – the art, the affairs and the wide circle of friends. But where did this all begin? What made Picasso in the first place? Too long ignored, it is time to look at the early years of Picasso; the upbringing and the learning that led to his extraordinary achievements. The film explains how this young artist acquired his craft. Looking carefully at two key early periods – the so-called Blue Period and Rose Period – the film takes us all the way to 1907 and the creation of a critical painting in the history of art – Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. It was a painting that shocked the art world but changed it irrevocably. Picasso was only 25 years old. Working closely with all three Picasso Museums in Malaga, Barcelona and Paris this film explains how he rose to such great heights.

Choreographer and composer Thea Little — whose work lives at the intersection of performance art, dance-theater, and experimental music — has presented her work across the US and Europe. Returning to her New York roots, she presents Honest Process, in which a wash of abstract gestures, vocals, and facial expressions form an internal language aimed at overcoming ego, commercialism, and narcissism, in favor of vulnerability and self-knowledge. Little performs alongside Katie Norton-Bliss and Lea Torelli in this blissfully interdisciplinary program. Sometimes serious, sometimes playful, Honest Process explores a relation to healing and all that healing can look and feel like. The work puts an emphasis on listening to one another, being present in the moment, and being patient with time and space, and offers a healthy dose of over-the-top improvisation, competition, and humor. Second Stage Theater - The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts
Through July 20, 2019 - New York

Come celebrate the decades of plays and musicals that have defined Second Stage as the home for living American playwrights. In 1979, a new theater was born with a novel idea: give a second chance to American plays that are worthy of a second look. Second Stage Theater started in a cramped 100-seat space on the 16th floor of a hotel on the Upper West Side. That first production was far from an easy or auspicious launch – the director and three actors quit, one at the very last minute (luckily, a young actor named Jeff Daniels agreed to step in and perform).

THE WHITE DRESS by Roger Q. Mason - Access Theater

A Coming-of-Age-Play for the They/Them Generation written by queer black/filipinx playwright Roger Q. Mason. Meet the Howard family: Theo is a busy black attorney; Hazel is his dutiful Filipina wife; and their son is bright, promising Jonathan. No, fuck that - here’s the Howard family: Theo has been pushed in the closet; Hazel’s Tiger mom tactics have kept him there; and all Jonathan wants to do is kiss Winnie, wear femme clothes, and love themself. Part religious rite, part dance/performance, THE WHITE DRESS is Jonathan Howard’s genderqueer coming-of-age journey through familial shaming, peer bullying, and unrequited love to redefine what male looks, sounds and feels like. Underscored live by Brooklyn-based DJ SunSon PDX and directed and choreographed by Adin Walker, THE WHITE DRESS features a music and movement score that accentuates Jonathan’s odyssey to be free in their own skin. This upcoming production comes after an acclaimed workshop production as part of the Araca Project, which was advocated for by influencers including Condola Rashad and Sara Ramirez. Playwright Roger Q. Mason’s lauded script has been named Finalist for The Lark Playwrights' Week and the ina... (read more)

Crushing Baby Animals - The Plaxall Gallery
Through July 21, 2019 - Long Island City

Long Island City. 2019. In an ego-driven and narcissistic world, two women possess the distinct anxiety of calling themselves artists. In a last ditch effort before they throw in the proverbial towel and become accountants, the pair begin work on what they hope will be their magnum opus, an ambitious and hellish physical-theatre adaptation of Dante’s Inferno. Crushing Baby Animals follows two traumatized women growing up in the millennial age as they accidentally open a cosmic wormhole that sucks them through space, time and the human mind. This meta work takes us on an uncharted and timely adventure through parallel dimensions and personal hells, bringing us face to face with our own antagonistic Dopplegangers, the perils of the human psyche, and the absurd pitfalls of human identity. The play blends physical theatre, multimedia and a healthy dose of humor in a unique artistic experience. “Crushing Baby Animals reflects our real shared experience as women making theatre in New York City, our real shared nightmare, and the discovery of what that coincidence could possibly mean,” states playwrights Tana Sirois and Maria Swisher. “Through a sci-fi theatrical device, we explore how... NOT EVEN THE GOOD THINGS is a dark comedy where a millennial getaway falls apart in the presence of the ghost of a young girl that only one character -- despite his best efforts -- is able to see. The play deals with a group of six 20-something-year-old friends who gather in a mountain cabin to enjoy a well-deserved vacation. It’s just that they can’t seem to enjoy anything, really. What is supposed to be a fun and carefree evening evolves into a drunken circus of attempted infidelity, nonsense, and weird religion. This all takes place under the watchful gaze of a young girl who only shows herself to one person, while he steadily and hilariously loses his grip on reality in the company of his oblivious friends.
