The Geopolitics of Contemporary Art - Albertine
May 20, 2019 - New York

Join French gallerist Nathalie Obadia, along with Benjamin Sutton, Lead Editor, Art Market and News, at Artsy, for a discussion in English on Obadia’s newly published book, Géopolitique de l’art contemporain, which analyzes the link between visual arts and geopolitics in today’s world. The book posits that Le Louvre in Abu Dhabi, Art Basel in Miami, and Jeff Koons’ tulips in Paris are all manifestations of contemporary art as a tool for influence. Art is not only a marker of power, it argues; it also measures a country’s degree of autonomy, its attractiveness, and its place in the world. The contemporary art scene is largely dominated by the United States and by the Western world. Since the middle of the 20th century, however, this landscape has gradually begun to open up to new powers with declared global ambitions, most notably China. Studying the role of the various stakeholders, artists, collectors, and museums, Nathalie Obadia analyses the evolution of the links between visual arts and geopolitics, with a particular focus on questioning the domination of American and Western soft powers. In English. Free and open to the public. No RSVP necessary.

In order to meet the carbon reduction goals set forth by the city, we will need to dramatically reduce fossil fuel consumption in our buildings. The city has identified heat pumps as a key strategy for achieving these goals. Variable refrigerant flow (VRF) heat pumps offer highly efficient, fossil fuel-free heating and cooling, in addition to saving space and cost. During this program, an architect, MEP engineer, public official, and VRF manufacturer's representative will provide information and insight on the application of VRF systems through the lens of their unique experiences. This program is one of several that will address technical and practical aspects of energy efficiency, shedding light on the city's forthcoming requirements for upgrading existing buildings to meet carbon emission goals, among other subject areas.

Revisiting French Classics: Emmanuel Bove's My Friends - Albertine
May 22, 2019 - New York

My Friends is Emmanuel Bove's first and most famous book. Its narrator, Victor Baton, is a classic little man, of no talent or distinction or importance and with no illusions that he has any of those things. All Victor wants is to be loved, all he wants is a friend, and as he strays through the streets of Paris in search of love or friendship or some fleeting connection, we laugh both at Victor's meekness and at his odd pride, but we feel with him, too.

Revisiting French Classics: Emmanuel Bove’s My Friends - Albertine
May 22, 2019 - New York

My Friends is Emmanuel Bove’s first and most famous book. Its narrator, Victor Baton, is a classic little man, of no talent or distinction or importance and with no illusions that he has any of those things. All Victor wants is to be loved, all he wants is a friend, and as he strays through the streets of Paris in search of love or friendship or some fleeting connection, we laugh both at Victor’s meekness and at his odd pride, but we feel with him, too. With Victor, Bove has created a kind of everyman, an archetypal, indomitable knight of human fragility who invests the back streets of the city and the unsorted moments of daily life with a weird and unforgettable clarity. On Wednesday, May 22 at 6:30pm, join Donald Breckenridge, Eugene Lim, Jonathon Sturgeon, and John Yau as they discuss Emmanuel Bove’s masterpiece. In English. Free and open to the public. No RSVP necessary.

Become a Citizen Pruner - Green-Wood Cemetery
May 22, 2019 - Brooklyn

Stewardship and pruning hugely reduce a tree's vulnerability to common urban threats such as pedestrian and vehicular traffic, drought and storms. In New York City, where there is limited funding for tree maintenance but significant need, Citizen Pruners provides a great asset to our urban environment. Join fellow nature lovers and urbanists to become licensed to take care of NYC's street trees. Green-Wood's own neighborhood, Sunset Park, is one of the fastest growing and most diverse neighborhoods in all of New York City. Yet, it also faces serious environmental challenges. Car and truck exhaust from the Gowanus Expressway and industrial emissions from its small manufacturers create higher than average levels of harmful air pollution. Street trees to the rescue! They're nature's miracle workers: they intercept and absorb storm water runoff, provide oxygen, fight climate change, and lower air temperatures.

Pecas Goo Deep Sea Peach Tree Greetings - The Bowery Electric
May 24, 2019 - New York

ecas is the nom de canción of Brooklyn-via-Madrid artist, Sandy Davis. Through pecas, Davis invites us to dance slowly, even cautiously, as she mixes gentle percussion and breathy vocals into a brand of R&B that is both seductive and sinister. Playing off of the traditional tropes of "baby-making" music, it's characteristically silky and smooth, but it's music to do-the-dirty to with one eye open - where "Let's Get it On" quickly becomes "You Better Run" if listening closely enough. The combination of glittering sounds and alluring vocals is a lethal one. Pecas is a gender-bending femme fatale for a new generation.

Become a Citizen Pruner - Green-Wood Cemetery
May 25, 2019 - Brooklyn

Stewardship and pruning hugely reduce a tree's vulnerability to common urban threats such as pedestrian and vehicular traffic, drought and storms. In New York City, where there is limited funding for tree maintenance but significant need, Citizen Pruners provides a great asset to our urban environment. Join fellow nature lovers and urbanists to become licensed to take care of NYC's street trees. The 12-hour Citizen Pruner Course consists of 5 sessions – 4 in the classroom and 1 field outing.
