Billy Childs – Map to the Treasure: Reimagining Laura Nyro - Jazz Standard
July 14, 2019 - New York

All of us at Jazz Standard are delighted to welcome back five–time GRAMMY Award winner Billy Childs, a musician held in the highest esteem for his prodigious skills as a pianist, composer, and arranger. Childs began his remarkable career as an apprentice musician with the bands of Freddie Hubbard and J.J. Johnson in the late Seventies and early Eighties. In 1988, he launched his recording career as a leader with Take For Example, This...– the first of his four critically acclaimed albums for Windham Hill Jazz. For this much–anticipated engagement, Billy and band – including the exceptional vocalists Alicia Olatuja and Kate McGarry – will revisit the 2014 Sony Masterworks album Map to the Treasure: Reimagining Laura Nyro. In his Rolling Stone review (9.9.2014), Dave DiMartino wrote: "This polished product, the work of jazz pianist Billy Childs, spotlights many of Nyro's best songs via Childs' creative orchestrations and the marvelous guest performers…Highly recommended." Billy Childs' latest album, Rebirth(Mack Avenue), marks "a return to the snaking quickfire hard–bop Childs played in the '70s, albeit infused with all the musics he has visited so intelligently since…It's ultra–s... 21 and over AL-053 Chris Corsano & Bill Orcutt LP "Brace Up!" Brace Up! is the first ever studio release from the duo of Chris Corsano (drums) and Bill Orcutt (guitar). Recorded in Brussels at Les Ateliers Claus by Christophe Albertijn on March 19th and 20th, 2018. Stage dive photograph by Jason Penner "Over the past six years or so, drummer Chris Corsano has proven to be one of Bill Orcutt's most reliably flexible collusionists. Regardless of whether Bill is cluster-busting electric guitar strings, weaseling around with cracked electronics, or playing relatively spacious free-rock, Corsano is able to provide the proper base for his aural sculpting. A lot of Orcutt's instrumental work has traditionally felt hermetic even though he's exploring caverns of explosive ecstasy.

Mingus Big Band: Celebrating 10 Years at Jazz Standard - Jazz Standard
July 15, 2019 - New York

"His music aimed always at the further extension of the horizons of jazz and sometimes experimented with atonality and with a wide range of dissonant effects. Some elements offer a sharp and piquant contrast, with clearly defined folk music roots and a savage, shouting, blues–derived intensity. Not for complacent ears, Mingus' music is the prototype of a new and vital generation of the 1960s just as Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie were of the 1940s." Mortality. It’s the primary reason we don’t live forever. If not for our mortality, the number of years each of us would have to roam this earth would be as infinite as the sands of time running through the earth itself. When extraterrestrials eventually make first contact with us within the next twenty years, the first glaringly obvious thing they will notice…is that we die. They will come to our planet with sinister intentions and they will immediately have the upper hand because we die…and they don’t. It’s a simple as that. And it’s all because of our mortality. While aliens (and the government!!!!!) will always be there to kill us, we have for generations used our cold dead hands to clutch onto whatever silver lining we could sew into the dark cloud of our everlasting mortality. Specifically, we tell ourselves that we can live forever, not in corporeal form, but through our creations of art…and our expressions of love. Thusly, art and love are more important than ever, because they are now the conduits that preserve our life forces. If you don’t create art and you don’t love nobody…well then, you will be forgotten, rather quickly. No one wants to be forgotten rather quick... (read more)

Ken Peplowski Quintet: The Legacy of Tram - Dizzy's Club
July 17, 2019 - New York

With saxophonist/clarinetist Ken Peplowski, saxophonist/clarinetist Aaron Johnson, pianist Ehud Asherie, bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Kevin Dorn. The votes are in, and now it's time to celebrate the 2019 Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame inductees! Night two of this year's festivities kicks off with Ken Peplowski paying tribute to the great Frank Trumbauer. Ken Peplowski is a clarinetist and saxophonist cherished for keeping the fire bright in traditional jazz and swing styles. Always with a group of expert swing stylists, he performs vivacious and virtuosic arrangements of classic, early jazz. Though the music is timeless, it's rare and rewarding to experience renditions that so deftly balance authenticity with individuality. Tonight he'll be honoring saxophone genius Frank Trumbauer, the nonpareil master of the C Melody saxophone who, famously in collaboration with Bix Beiderbecke, mastered a singing lyrical line that set the gold standard for the jazz ballad. Peplowski is here for one set only, so don't miss out!

Bruce Williams Quintet: Portrait of Cannonball - Dizzy's Club
July 17, 2019 - New York

With alto saxophonist Bruce Williams, trumpeter Freddie Hendrix, pianist Brandon McCune, bassist Gerald Cannon, and drummer Vince Ector. The votes are in, and now it's time to celebrate the 2019 Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame inductees! Our two nights of induction festivities conclude with this final set, as alto saxophonist Bruce Williams pays tribute to the inimitable Cannonball Adderley. Williams is a gifted musician who has toured and recorded with artists including the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, the World Saxophone Quartet, Branford Marsalis, Josh Evans, Stanley Cowell, Grassella Oliphant, and Oliver Lake. Tonight he will celebrate fellow alto player Cannonball Adderley, who made indelible contributions to the worlds of hard bop, modal jazz, soul jazz, and fusion. Sporting a full-bodied sound and blues-drenched delivery, Cannonball's playing graced some of music's most iconic records, from Kind of Blueto The Black Messiah. Williams' own music ranges from slow, thoughtful ballads to greasy mid-tempo swing numbers and fast burners, and he's well equipped to make his own meaningful musical statement about the legendary Cannonball. This set cl... (read more)

Oliver Beer: Vessel Orchestra Live Performance - Metropolitan Museum of Art
July 19, 2019 - New York

Oliver Beer: Vessel Orchestra is the first sound-based installation commissioned by The Met. Hybrid by design, it is a musical instrument, a series of live performances, and an installation composed of thirty-two sculptures, utilitarian vessels, and decorative objects from the Museum collection. Selected for their natural pitches, which range from low C to high G on the chromatic musical scale, they form an arresting and unexpectedly versatile instrument, similar to an organ with multiple pipes. The Vessel Orchestra has two distinct modes. During Museum hours, a pre-programmed audio interface will play a new composition written by Beer, activating the vessels in real time—"player piano-style." On Friday evenings, the exhibition will feature a diverse group of guest artists who will perform new compositions and improvisations on this radical musical instrument in a series of intimate concerts.

Choreographed by George Balanchine and Alexandra Danilova after Marius Petipa, it has remained one of the best-loved classical works in the ballet repertory. Called one of the "happiest ballets in existence," it tells the story of an eccentric inventor and the lifelike doll he creates. The work is visually stunning, with storybook sets and a cast of dancing children. The music of Coppélia links two great historical periods of ballet — the French Romantic style and the Russian Classical style.
