The Gotham Easy - Rue-B Jazz
Through April 14, 2019 - New York

The Gotham Easy is a hot jazz band born on the mean streets of NYC. While being completely at ease playing classic standards in the time-honored New Orleans tradition, the band brings a brash vitality to music that is all too often treated as a delicate museum piece. The Gotham Easy's members have been playing together since 2006, performing at house parties, weddings, bars, clubs, speakeasies, film festivals, theaters, churches, burlesque shows, variety shows, award shows, swing dances, parades, funerals, radio stations, museums, universities, zoos, parks, libraries, European jazz festivals, NFL games, and Jazz at Lincoln Center. Whether revitalizing the traditional jazz canon with their excitement and energy, or whipping an audience into a frenzy with their raucous original compositions, the Gotham Easy brings the music of the early 20th century into the early 21st century with a fresh style and attitude

BLACK LIPS Quintron And Miss Pussycat - Monty Hall
April 17, 2019 - Jersey City

Atlanta flower punk pioneers Black Lips have announced that their first album in three years, Satan’s graffiti or God’s art?, is set for release May 5 on Vice Records. Produced by Sean Lennon at his studio compound in upstate New York throughout 2016, the album is the group’s most musically evolved to date, while still staying true to their original blistering take on fuzzy, dirty rock n’ roll. During the recording the band isolated themselves from the outside world, infusing the album with a focused liveliness similar to the spirit that brought them together in the first place. On Satan’s graffiti or God’s art? founding members Cole Alexander and Jared Swilley teamed with former guitarist Jack Hines (who played in the group from 2002-2004) and recent additions Oakley Munson on drums and Zumi Rosow on saxophone. The album also features contributions by Saul Adamczewski of Fat White Family and guest vocals by Yoko Ono. Black Lips were born of DIY ethic, working their way from sweaty basement shows in Georgia to huge crowds at international music festivals (including a performance at Fun Fun Fun Fest that appears in Terrence Malick’s forthcoming film Song to Song) to tours in s... Composer + Holocaust Victim, New York Premiere at Meisel Gallery - Louis K. Meisel Gallery
April 17, 2019 - New York

Composer Viktor Ullmann is one of the most notable of the artists who continued to compose while entrapped in Nazi concentration camps. Although many manuscripts were undoubtedly destroyed as their creators met an untimely fate, some were smuggled out or hidden. Ullmann wrote and premiered music while imprisoned in the Nazi concentration camp Terezin (Theresienstadt) before he was ultimately murdered in a gas chamber at Auschwitz. Pianofest in the Hamptons will present the New York premiere of one of Viktor Ullmann's works written in the concentration camp, The Tale of the Love and Death of Cornet Christopher Rilke for Narrator and Piano, on Wednesday, April 17, at the Louis K. Meisel Gallery in SoHo (141 Prince St, New York, NY 10012).

Terror JR - Warsaw
April 17, 2019 - Brooklyn

Terror Jr Finding the sweet spot between self-deprecation and extreme overconfidence, Terror Jr spent the last year creating an album they wish they had growing up. Now they are bringing Unfortunately, Terror Jr to a city near you. Kossisko When Kossisko first burst onto the scene as 100s -- a slick-talking, perm-wearing rapper in the lineage of Too $hort and Snoop Dogg -- his charisma was immediately captivating. The pimp rapper pesona, and the '70s-inspired aesthetic, that the Berkeley-born artist refined on 2012's Ice Cold Perm and 2014's IVRY earned him a cult fan base that clung to his every gamed-laced word. But, in the midst of this success, he began to feel boxed in and disconnected from the role he'd created. "I hit a ceiling and I couldn't express myself how I wanted to," he says now. "I didn't want to be playing a character." In 2015, Kossisko set out on a divergent course, adopting his given first name as his moniker and exploring other influences that ranged from Prince to Marilyn Manson. "I never say never but I didn't think I was ever going to rap again," he remembers. "You burn out on that and it's like, 'Now what?' There's so many other aspects of your... (read more)

Archduke Rudolph: Beethoven’s Pupil and Patron - Bohemian National Hall
April 17, 2019 - New York

Ignat Solzhenitsyn, piano Korbinian Altenberger, violin Na-Young Baek, cello Illustrated talk by Ignat Solzhenitsyn PROGRAM Beethoven Violin Sonata No.10 in G major, Op.96 Beethoven Piano Trio in B-flat major, Op. 97 “Archduke” The most significant of Beethoven’s noble patrons during his years in Vienna was Archduke Rudolph of Austria, youngest brother of the Emperor Franz. Beethoven began teaching Rudolph piano in around 1803–04, and the archduke later became his sole composition student. He was also the only one of his patrons whose financial support continued uninterrupted until the composer’s death. Beethoven generally scorned aristocrats, but it appears his relationship with Rudolph was different. In the composer’s own words, the archduke treated him ‘like a friend, not a servant’. Beethoven dedicated fifteen of his most important works to Rudolph (more than to any other individual), including the Fourth and Fifth Piano Concertos and, following the archduke’s appointment as a cardinal and then as Archbishop of Olmütz in 1819, the Missa solemnis. In this programme we present two of the chamber works dedicated to him – the Violin Sonata in G major, Op. 96 and the ‘Arc... (read more)

Hélène Grimaud Plays Ravel - Carnegie Hall
April 18, 2019 - Manhattan

Pablo Heras-Casado returns to OSL to conduct this program exploring Haydn's influence on 20th-century neoclassical composers. The inventive "Drumroll" Symphony is one of Haydn's finest works and might have inspired Prokofiev's effervescent "Classical" Symphony, which emulates Classical-era scoring and tone but remains firmly rooted in the 20th century. Pianist Hélène Grimaud plays Ravel's dazzling Piano Concerto in G Major, which looks back to the Classical era with flashes of jazz and sizzling virtuosity.

Street Art Pilgrimage in Bushwick - Street Art Pilgrimage
Through June 21, 2019 - Brooklyn

Bushwick has long enjoyed a reputation as a mecca for the world’s most illustrious street artists, who have radically altered its urban landscape. Residential, commercial, and industrial buildings have all served as large-scale canvases for muralists to engage with the history, sites, and people of one of the most dynamic neighborhoods in Brooklyn. However, local residents and visitors don't always have easy access to basic information regarding any given mural, such as artist biography, artistic motivation, or how the content and style relate to local architecture and the community's rich past. This carefully curated and independently researched tour is designed to provide greater context surrounding key works of art while simultaneously introducing guests to some of Bushwick's local establishments. Whether you’re a native New Yorker looking to find out more about the public art you walk past every day or a tourist in town looking for a less conventional excursion, this 1.5-hour tour offers in-depth information presented in a fun, engaging way. Unlike other tours, we'll only be focusing on a small number of murals, allowing us to dissect the symbolism and meaning as a group.
