NYC's Best Pho

Cooler weather equals soup weather in our book, and pho tops the list of flavorful favorites in New York City. Eating pho isn’t like eating any regular meal. It’s an art. From choosing which veggies you want in your bowl to the amount of mint and cilantro that will top it off perfectly, pho makes for an exciting meal every time. Rounded up below are the top five pho joints in NYC, an if you’re a fan of the steamy soup, these restaurants should be added to your bucket list ASAP.

Best of NYC Pho: An’Nam (Midtown West)

An'Nam

An’Nam splits their menu between Japanese and Vietnamese cuisine, and while their sushi rolls are certainly show-stoppers, their Vietnamese pho holds its own. There’s only one option when ordering pho from An’Nam, but we don’t really have any qualms about that seeing as the flavor combination is on point. The pho consists of a hearty oxtail soup with rice noodles, beef, basil, bean sprouts, and hoisin dipping sauce. 234 W. 48th St., 212-247-8318, annamnyc.com

Best of NYC Pho: Saigon Shack (Greenwich Village)

 Saigon Shack

Saigon Shack has you covered with all of the traditional pho options, but it also has a couple of its own special orders that make it one of the best restaurants in Manhattan. Specifically, its Spicy S.S. Special Pho is mind-blowing (thinly sliced raw beef, beef balls, house brisket, and Vietnamese ham). As for you chicken fans, Saigon Shack’s Grilled Lemongrass Chicken Pho is an absolute must. (All orders come with a side of bean sprouts, jalapenos, basil, lime, scallions, cilantro, and onions). 114 Macdougal St., 212-228-0588, saigonshack.squarespace.com

Best of NYC Pho: Sao Mai (East Village)

While from the outside Sao Mai might not look like anything to write home about, its selection of pho is just the opposite. With seven options to choose between that range from beef eye round noodle to mixed seafood noodle, there’s something here for every pho-lover (including vegetarians!). Their beef noodle broth is especially commendable, and there are few places you would find a more credible bowl of pho anywhere in the city. 203 1st Ave., 212-358-8880

Best of NYC Pho: An Choi (Lower East Side)

 An Choi

An Choi pulls out all the stops when it comes to their pho, leaving the broth cooking for twenty-four hours before serving it — and yes, you can taste the difference. Along with a noteworthy Beef Deluxe Noodle Soup (beef brisket, rare flank, oxtail, tendon, meatballs, and fried cruller), the Crab Noodle Soup is also a specialty here, stuffed with lump crab meat, San Marazano tomatoes, and tofu. No matter which pho you order, you can bet that it will be packed with meat, definitely giving you your money’s worth. 85 Orchard St., 212-226-3700, anchoinyc.com

Best of NYC Pho: Pho Grand (Lower East Side)

There’s no shortage of options at Pho Grand, meaning you can keep going back again and again without boring of the flavors. There are 20 pho options here, and no matter if you’re ordering the Beef Flank, the Pork Chop, the Fish Ball, or the Jump Shrimp and Vegetable you’ll be getting an authentic rice noodle soup that will remind why NYC really is the one city where you can get anything and you can get it done right. 277 Grand St., 212-965-5366, phograndny.com
