Bridges & Tunnels w/ Dan Saulpaugh at The Loft - City Winery
June 23, 2019 - New York

Tickets will be $15 Day of Show Following the successful reception of songwriter Danny Greenberg's debut LP, the band spent the last three years playing shows around the Northeast headlining venues such as Rockwood Music Hall and My Fathers Place, and opening for acts such as Erick Schenkman of the Spin Doctors. Previous support for the project includes over 50 radio stations across the US and Canada, Interviews with NPR and WFUV, and being featured in John Platt's On Your Radar as an act you need to know. Musically, Brides & Tunnels both polished and expanded their approach, retaining their narrative depth while bringing a simplicity and space to the sound that allows the words, harmonies and hooks to do the talking. The band lives by their mission of using music and narrative to connect people to things we all have in common. In scope, palette, and composition, Bridges & Tunnels is a more daring and successful leap for a song writer that already kickstarted his career with a promising debut. Dan Saulpaugh New York City based singer-songwriter Dan Saulpaugh exists at the nexus of indie-folk and modern jazz. Blending the emotional immediacy of Jeff Buckley's folk-as-art-music ... Read650 presents Stonewall + 50 at The Loft - City Winery
June 23, 2019 - New York

Tickets will be $30 Day of Show 12 writers telling true stories of a repressive world that exploded into paths of freedom 50 years ago. The newspapers called it a "riot" because the straight world lacked the language to describe what happened on the sweltering early morning hours of June 28, 1969. It began with an all-too-common attack by New York City police who never expected their would-be victims to fight back. Like so many revolutions, the Stonewall Uprising began spontaneously in a tiny place no one had ever heard of, and the reverberations from those five days of outrage and resistance have echoed through American history to this day. Twelve of those echoes will ring out on Sunday, June 23 at 2 p.m. at The Loft at City Winery during Stonewall + 50, a showcase production of the popular spoken-word series Read650. This latest curated presentation will feature a dozen straight and LGBTQ writers recalling incidents from their lives that have been colored by what happened at the Stonewall Inn 50 years ago. For the past five years, Read650 has attracted top writers, playwrights, memoirists—Pulitzer Prize winners and first-timers—to read their works before standing room only a... (read more)

Vezhlivy Otkaz - DROM
June 25, 2019 - New York

Vezhlivy Otkaz, which means "polite refusal" in English, is one of the most original and erratic rock bands in Russia. It was formed in 1985 with a then-popular reggae/ska blend. Since then, they have gone through numerous stylistic changes, flirting with everything from free jazz to Russian folk. Their sound, however, has always been unique and immediately recognizable. Roman Suslov's rhythmic guitar work and unusual high-pitched vocals gives VO's music a precisely constructed, crystal-clear sound that is completely devoid of any of the extra noise so typical of rock-n-roll. The sound is so well organized that sounds almost academic.

Prefuse 73 - Le Poisson Rouge
June 26, 2019 - West Village

18+ Prefuse 73 is the foremost alias of Guillermo Scott Herren, a producer and musician whose novel approach to hip-hop production helped bridge the '90s output of the Mo' Wax label to the following decade's Los Angeles beat scene. Starting with albums such as Vocal Studies + Uprock Narratives (2001) and One Word Extinguisher (2003), Herren was one of the Warp label's most noteworthy artists for a decade. Since then, he has recorded for smaller labels (inspired by Warp itself) like Temporary Residence and Lex, highlighted with expansive and colorful sets such as Rivington Não Rio (2015) and Sacrifices (2018). Although Herren has occasionally drifted away from hip-hop with positive results, his elegantly layered way with beats, and heavily treated voices, whether through samples or collaborations with the likes of MF Doom and Broadcast's Trish Keenan, have remained the least replicable weapon in his arsenal.

David Johansen & The Harry Smiths Reunion at The Loft - City Winery
June 29, 2019 - New York

Today, the words "blues" and "shouting" are, alas, inextricably linked, but what about the tradition of mellow blues crooners that extended through Charles Brown, Nat King Cole and, in their more romantic moments, Joe Williams and Ray Charles? "Buster Poindexter" (nee David Johansen) first attracted attention as a glam rock pioneer (in the New York Dolls, with whom he still tours) and then as an early MTV idol (with "Hot Hot Hot"). Yet with his big, deep, resonant voice, Buster Poindexter is most impressive as a crooner and occasional belter of ballads in the classic R&B tradition. His ongoing run affirms the point that however you know him, the artist known as Buster Poindexter, complete with his one-liners and longer comic monologues (not to mention his signature pompadour), is one of the most endearing and enduring entertainers currently trodding the boards in New York.
