Superb Alto Saxophonist Christopher McBride has been slowly but steadily turning heads with his ubiquitous work as an invaluable sideman since the mid-aughts. Now Christopher is gaining respect amongst fans, critics and his peers as one of the most versatile musicians in the world. His 2012 debut album Quatuor de Force certainly establishes his ability to front a group and write his own soulful, melodically indelible tunes. Applauded for his ability to play in all musical situations, McBride has the ability to unleash a fiery attack and serrated tone, but on his recent album he explores a more measured, mellow sound heavily influenced by contemporary R&B—with a strong shot of Cannonball Adderley's post-bop sensuality–but his improvising is very rigorous and co

National Symphony Orchestra - Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall
May 19, 2019 - New York

Liszt vividly depicts episodes from Dante's Inferno and Purgatory, while Rossini paints a portrait of a mother's grief. The intense drama of Dante's verse comes to life in Liszt's spectacularly orchestrated descriptions of hell's terrors and ethereal women's choir intoning the Magnificat in the ascent to Purgatory. A masterpiece of 19th-century sacred music, Rossini's setting of the Stabat Mater, the Virgin Mary's lament at the cross of Jesus, moves with superb vocal writing, including the hair-raising "Inflammatus" for soprano and chorus, the tenor's showpiece "Cujus animam," and more.

Full Circle Mondays - Hosted by Noah Jackson - Gin Fizz
May 20, 2019 - New York

The longstanding tradition of the after-hours jam in Harlem is back @ Gin Fizz Full Circle Mondays, hosted by Noah Jackson The history of the jam session is in many ways the history of jazz. Equal parts breeding ground and proving ground, the jam is inextricably tied to the history of the cutting contest, a blowing battle of one-upmanship over multiple choruses where players try to literally bust each other's chops. Historically, cutting contests are primarily identified as a phenomenon among stride pianists of the 1920s and '30s; stride greats like Fats Waller, Willie "The Lion" Smith and James P. Johnson were legendarily competitive at New York clubs and rent parties.

Nikolett Pankovits Sextet & the River Voices - Carnegie Hall
May 20, 2019 - New York

Jazz singer Nikolett Pankovits and a brilliant cast of vocalists & instrumentalists re-imagine the haunting melodies of Hungarian folk music with a luscious array of jazz and Latin American rhythms. The project builds upon the field research of legendary Hungarian composers such as Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly, confounding stylistic expectations and melding disparate musical worlds. For Pankovits, the New York scene provided an ideal forum for melding the music of her youth with her love of jazz and kindred musical currents. Working closely with longtime collaborator Juancho Herrera, a New York string wizard and arranger from Colombia, she’s designed the Zankel Hall concert as a barrier-breaking event for both Hungarian music lovers and music fans drawn to creatively charged cross-cultural collaborations. The concert grew out of Pankovits’ hit production featuring Latin jazz-inflected arrangements of traditional Hungarian songs Sad But True, which she performed to sold-out audiences in New York at venues such as the Blue Note, Joe’s Pub, the Bitter End, Club Bonafide, Rockwood Music Hall, and Lincoln Center. Pankovits performs with both her jazz group and The River Voice... (read more)

May 24, 2019 - New York

The Justice Collective is a musical project created by Boyce upon moving to New York City. This band, though an ever-shifting experiment, is consistently focused on alluding to an educated understanding of improvising and jazz harmony while occupying a less swing-focused and more mainstream rhythmic pallette. The group thrives on the level of friendship shared between members, even if the lineup isn't the same every time, there are no enemies and there is no negative energy occupying the musical space, instead all energy is focused on nurturing each other's creativity and unique talents to create a sum total sound that reflects every musician's contribution to the group. There is no mystical or mysterious energy surrounding the group, these are simply just talented human beings who enjoy each other's company and the company of those who listen. Humans make this music, so we act like humans. The group is set to record in 2019, and will make frequent appearances in New York City in the coming months

Buster Poindexter at The Loft - The Loft at City Winery
May 24, 2019 - New York

Today, the words "blues" and "shouting" are, alas, inextricably linked, but what about the tradition of mellow blues crooners that extended through Charles Brown, Nat King Cole and, in their more romantic moments, Joe Williams and Ray Charles? "Buster Poindexter" (nee David Johansen) first attracted attention as a glam rock pioneer (in the New York Dolls, with whom he still tours) and then as an early MTV idol (with "Hot Hot Hot"). Yet with his big, deep, resonant voice, Buster Poindexter is most impressive as a crooner and occasional belter of ballads in the classic R&B tradition. His ongoing run affirms the point that however you know him, the artist known as Buster Poindexter, complete with his one-liners and longer comic monologues (not to mention his signature pompadour), is one of the most endearing and enduring entertainers currently trodding the boards in New York.

Boasting a warm, finely burnished tone and a robust melodic and harmonic imagination, tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander has been exploring new musical worlds from the outset. He started out on the piano as a six-year-old, took up the clarinet at nine, switched to alto sax when he was 12, and converted to tenor when jazz became his obsession during his one year at the University of Indiana, Bloomington (1986-87). At William Paterson College in New Jersey, he advanced his studies under the tutelage of Harold Mabern, Joe Lovano, Rufus Reid, and others. "The people I listened to in college are still the cats that are influencing me today," says Alexander. "Monk, Dizzy, Sonny Stitt, Clifford Brown, Sonny Rollins, Jackie McLean, Joe Henderson–the legacy left by Bird and all the bebop pioneers, that language and that feel, that's the bread and butter of everything I do.
