Orquesta Akokan W/ Special Guests - Buffalo Iron Works
July 08, 2019 - Buffalo

Straight out of Havana, Cuba comes Orquesta Akokán – a blazing ensemble of deeply soulful mambo reminiscent of Benny Moré, Pérez Prado, and banda gigante of the 1940's and 50's. The album boasts all original songs recorded at the historic state-run Estudios Areito with Cuba's finest players, young and old, led by the inimitable and dynamic singer José "Pepito" Gómez, produced by Chulo Records' Jacob Plasse, with incendiary arrangements by Michael Eckroth. The ferocious and pedigreed wind and rhythm sections consist of musicians from storied groups including Irakere, NG La Banda, and Los Van Van. Robust, time-tested musical architectures of son cubano and mambo are honored and modernized through a synthesis of the rich compositional styles of Havana, New York, and beyond. Spring 2018 found this brand new project released on Daptone Records; their first Spanish language album, one recorded outside of Daptone's studios, yet bursting with the label's innate sense of soul, fine-tuned attention to sonic detail, and songcraft that's timeless and immaculate. "A groove as intense as a runaway train" hails NPR. Orquesta Akokán made their US debut in July 2018 (including a date at Lincoln Ce... (read more)

Celia Berk With Sean Gough At Birdland Theater - Birdland Theater
July 09, 2019 - New York

Award-winning vocalist Celia Berk returns to Birdland Theater on Tuesday, July 9, 2019, at 7 pm. COMES LOVE is her new collaboration with pianist Sean Gough. Meeting at an intersection between jazz and cabaret, they have created a program of songs about love, including the kinds of hidden gems by great songwriters such as Irving Berlin, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Billy Strayhorn, that have become Celia's trademark. Celia and Sean said, "This is a different type of collaboration for both of us, offering new musical challenges. Sean approaches popular songs mainly as an improviser, Celia through the lens of storytelling. Over time, the lyrics of the songs we chose began to guide both of us to unexpected musical places. We hope the audience will enjoy the discoveries we have made as much as we have." Sean Gough is best known for his more than decade-long collaboration with veteran bass player Gene Perla, with whom he has appeared across the United States and in Europe, including at Smalls and Zinc Bar. Since a young age, Sean has accompanied his grandfather, Metropolitan Opera tenor Ronald Naldi, in recitals. Celia and Sean will be joined by bassist Steve Doyle (Christine Ebersole, ... (read more)

Allan Harris: A Tale of Two Kings - Dizzy's Club

With vocalist Allan Harris, drummer/cajon player Shirazette Tinnin, pianist Arcoiris Sandoval, and bassist Nimrod Speaks. "…the warmth of Tony Bennett, the bite and rhythmic sense of Sinatra, and the sly elegance of Nat King Cole." – The Miami Herald "Although he's best known for his buttery tributes to Nat "King" Cole and Billy Eckstine, [Allan] Harris ranks among the most dexterous singers around, and he proves fully up to the challenge" of "navigating the tricky, rapid-fire, street-smart wordplay of vocalese—an art form [Eddie] Jefferson is widely credited with creating." – JazzTimes The award-winning Allan Harris is a Brooklyn-born, Harlem-raised vocalist, guitarist, and composer with a powerful baritone voice and a huge stylistic range. In his return to Dizzy's Club, he will pay tribute to two geniuses of jazz vocals: vocalese pioneer Eddie Jefferson and crooner Nat "King" Cole. By taking on both of these artists' famous songbooks and vocal approaches, Harris will showcase—and perhaps combine—two very different sides of his immense talent in an impressive and entertaining performance.

Ulysses Owens Jr.'s 'Generation Y' - Jazz Standard
July 10, 2019 - New York

Many musicians would be content with being one of the most in–demand drummers on the scene today – but not Ulysses Owens Jr., who continues to burnish his credentials as a composer, bandleader, producer and educator. From his GRAMMY Award–winning performances with the Christian McBride Trio and Big Band to world tours with Kurt Elling and Joey Alexander, Owens has been a crucial participant in some of the most successful jazz ensembles of the 21st century. As a leader, he's released five albums including Songs of Freedom (2019) with vocal performances by Rene Marie, Alicia Olatuja, and Theo Bleckmann; and four more CDs with the New Century Jazz Quintet, the Japan–based group he co–leads with pianist Takeshi Ohbayashi. Grateful Bro - The Capitol Theatre
July 10, 2019 - Port Chester

I have had the honor to talk with Marc Jacoby (guitar), Cliff Mays (guitar) and Jim Weingast (drums) about what the Grateful-Blue Roadhouse Orchestra brings to the music of the Grateful Dead. Although they will be playing exclusively Grateful Dead tunes, they do not want to be seen exclusively as a "cover band". Marc commented: "I have always played Grateful Dead music, as long as I have been playing guitar. I just like the sound of the music". "We all like to share the music". Cliff adds:" The Grateful Dead songbook was very unusual. The songs had a richness not found in other bands". "We all had different eras in which we were introduced to the band". The band is close in "feel" to the Grateful Dead without being note for note copies. There is no "Jerry" or "Bobby" in the group. It just comes out Grateful Dead. Jim added: "It's all about listening and responding to one another as opposed to playing a preconceived notion of what the Dead were playing". It is as it should be then, because the Dead never played note for note copies of their songs night to night. This is a band that captures the spirit of the Grateful Dead. They investigate and explore the chemistry of the Dead. Garc... (read more)

Sweet Crude + Shamarr Allen - Brooklyn Bowl
July 10, 2019 - Brooklyn

"Sweet Crude is an extremely exciting new group with haunting and mesmerizing vocals sung in Louisiana French and English." – PopMatters "When most think of New Orleans, what usually comes to mind immediately are wild Mardi Gras celebrations, great jazz, and Cafe Du Monde's famed beignets. Hailing from the Louisiana city, rising indie pop six-piece Sweet Crude know there's so much more to be found and appreciated: a richness in culture and history, which they've deftly woven into the foundation of their work." – Consequence of Sound Over the past few years, Sweet Crude has managed to take the music and language of Louisiana and produce a completely fresh music that thrusts century-old traditions into the present. The six-piece band consistently delivers exciting shows featuring enough drums for a small marching band, exuberantly bellowed harmonies, and lyrics that jump from English to Louisiana French in a single verse. Boasting surnames like Marceaux and Chachere, Sweet Crude seeks to reconnect with their lineage in a way that draws on their own modern influences, while nodding to the music and language of their ancestors. The members of Sweet Crude all hail from South Louis... (read more)

Patrick Sweany Band - Sportsmen's Tavern
July 10, 2019 - Buffalo

"His music has a loose, aggresive edge, but in his quiter moments, Sweany recalls the supple beauty of Ry Cooder's 70s readings of Depression-era pop blues." – MOJO (UK) "New Blues Explosion!" "Effortlessly cool, sunburt soul."– Nashville Tennessean "For those who love the Blues but are bored with the tight-assed "white guys in blazers" style and prefer something more adventurous, Sweany is a slam-dunk. The new album is a start-to-finish thrill, partly due to the singer/songwriter/guitarist's lack of "stick to the script" Blues theory. Sweany dips into the more folksy side of Blues, slinky R&B, early Rock & Roll, '70s Blues Rock and dirty Garage Blues. That's not to say that Sweany is for White Stripes fans only; the man has mad-crazy skills in whatever style he's exploring and redecorating, something even the staunchest "back in my day" curmudgeon is sure to appreciate if they give it an open-minded listen." – Cincinnati CityBeat

Add to this a warmly centered alto voice, well captured here, and a complete package of delight emerges. Soul Garden is less a jazz recording than a vocal music recording. Lohninger uses jazz techniques in music of a much wider appeal. This is music for grown-ups dealing with grown-up things: love, the environment, the Beatles." - C. Michael Bailey,All About Jazz "Lohninger shapes an adventurous but accessible session that ideally showcases her voice.
