Make a summer solstice-inspired thaumatrope in the Arthur Ross Terrace and Garden. Kick off the summer with a friendly game of corn hole in the Arthur Ross Terrace and Garden. No registration required. 5:00–6:00 PM: DESIGNING TIME Celebrate the summer solstice with an exploration of how design has played a role in how we engage with time. Presenters: Emily Orr, Assistant Curator of Modern and Contemporary Design at Cooper Hewitt; Brittany Cox, Antiquarian Horologist at Memoria Technica; Lana Sutherland, CEO at Tealeaves; and Albert Shum, CVP of Design at Microsoft. After the program join the Designing Time presenters for tea and continued conversation. Register today. 6:30–7:30 PM: SOLSTICE YOGA Relax and rejuvenate with Solstice Yoga in the beautiful Arthur Ross Terrace and Garden. Yoga teacher Giovanna Macejka will lead participants through a solstice-inspired yoga class. Suitable for all levels. Solstice Saturday at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum

The Smithsonian will celebrate the first Saturday of summer—“Solstice Saturday”—with free parties, programs and performances June 23. At Cooper Hewitt, you'll find a full day's worth of activities!

10:00am–9:00pm

  • Search for solstice-related objects throughout the museum with our Solstice Scavenger Hunt (all galleries).
  • Soak up some sun while playing Ping Pong in the Arthur Ross Terrace and Garden.

2:00–4:00pm
