Hedwig and the Angry Inch: Change is in the Stars

Like its bewigged and be-glittered title character, 2014’s Tony-winning musical is heavily into the whole metamorphosis conceit.

It all started with Neil Patrick Harris, when he signed on to star in Hedwig and the Angry Inch last year. For theatre lovers, his scooping up the Tony Award for Best Lead Actor in Musical for his efforts is old news. [Thankfully, his star status is in perpetual motion, the latest evidence being his Academy Awards hosting gig next Sunday night.] But I digress.

Once Harris’s contract came to an end, Tony nominee Andrew Rannalls (The Book of Mormon) got his rock musical freak on as the transgender lead singer of The Angry Inch, followed by Golden Globe/Screen Actors Guild winner Michael C. Hall of Dexter fame, who ended his run mid-January to make way for John Cameron Mitchell, who originated the role of Hedwig in 1998 when it debuted at Off-Broadway’s Jane Theatre.

Blink and he'll be gone! Michael C. Hall fills in as Hedwig through Feb. 21. John Cameron Mitchell then continues
through April 26. He will then be replaced by Darren Criss.

The most current news orbiting the white-hot musical is two pronged: 1) Tonight and Saturday (2/21), Hall is back in the show, covering for Mitchell; and 2) once Mitchell departs on April 26th, his replacement will be Darren Criss (Glee; How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying). Criss is slated to remain with the show through July 19th – after which Broadway’s next Hedwig is anybody’s guess. Place your bets and/or suggestions here.
