October 26, answer the eternal question posed in Heathers: “Are we going to prom or to hell?” Dance to throwback jams, enter a costume contest, watch spliced-together horror movies, and eat lots and lots of candy at Prom from Hell. Not for the faint at heart, enter a Hollywood-level haunted warehouse full of performance art and music at the Warehouse of Horrors. Over the two nights of performances, there will also be food, art, slides, and rides. Two stages will be going on the nights of October 26 and 27: the Fire Stage and the Earth Stage. The Great PUPkin Dog Costume Contest

Calling all canines: it’s the costume contest to end all costume contests. Now in its 20th year, The Great PUPkin evaluates dogs’ Halloween costumes on the monument steps of Fort Greene Park. All dogs must be registered online or in person in order to participate (take a look at some past contestants here), and the winner will receive prizes from local vendors! Judging starts promptly at 11:30am on October 27, and we highly recommend showing up early for a front-row seat. While you’re around, check out the Fort Greene Park Conservancy Halloween Fest! Celebrate the harvest season with your family at Brooklyn’s greenest garden on Saturday, October 27. From noon to 5:30pm, kids of all ages can explore the garden and this Halloween festival full of fun. They’ll see stilt-dancers, feed caterpillars, and play skee-ball with a rutabaga (don’t knock it till you try it). The festival will also feature a costume parade. Brooklyn’s coolest brewery is hosting a Halloween party you’ll want to check out, especially if you have a great scream. That’s because they’re having a scream contest, in addition to a costume contest. Expect drink specials and specials from the pop-up shop The Meat Hook, purveyor of mouth-watering burgers. Feast and listen to ghostly live music, all in costume, this Halloween in Greenpoint. Up-and-coming pop act Salt Cathedral will perform as participants sup on three courses of Italian food (made with local ingredients) and drink beer and cider. In the mood for a historical Halloween? Check out Brooklyn Historical Society’s Boos in the Borough event on October 31. This free evening begins with “An Affectionate History of Winding Sheets and Burial Garments.” An illustrated lecture by Amy Cunningham, a local funeral director, this tour through the history of funeral garments across cultures will expose the secret tales of burial-wear and the new frontiers of sustainable funeral garments being designed today. At 7:45pm, come see ghost-tour guide extraordinaire Andrea Janes (founder of Boroughs of the Dead) explain the haunted houses of Brooklyn, including the Brooklyn Historical Society building on Pierrepont Street.
