Manhattan's Lower East Side is one of the most popular neighborhoods in the entire city thanks to its rambunctious nightlife and ever-growing sea of restaurants, bars, galleries, and shops. You'll never run out of things to do on the Lower East Side this month thanks to City Guide's detailed monthly guide to the neighborhood.

Rico Suave vs. D'marquesina - DROM
October 06, 2018 - New York

For over 5 years — but 12, really, if you've been with them since the Nacotheque days — Rico Suave (Marcelo C.) and D'marquesina (Hector Arce) have been filling up various dancefloors in New York City by playing the best — "and worst," they say — "cumbiaton, nutropial, perreopop, merenguetrap, rockitsch," and other mashups of Latino music. No artists or band is too obscure, no era is too old, but Spanish-sung music, from popular wedding standards to brand-new club bangers, is always front and center.

The Woggles - The Bowery Electric
October 06, 2018 - New York

"For two decades, The Woggles have marched forth from Georgia like Sherman in reverse, leveling nightclubs with their hip-shaking, windshield-steaming garage rock fusillade" (Austin Chronicle). From songs that shake the rafters to shows that make for "a dance party rave-up that could melt Dick Clark's face off" (Village Voice), the Woggles are a four-man delivery system for 200-proof, nitro-fueled rock'n'roll. As their die-hard fans around the world know, music fads and fashions may come and go, but the Woggles share a vision and blaze a trail with the same insanity as the true wildman originators of three-chord mayhem. Combine a whole lot of 60's rock'n'roll with a fist-full of soul, a hip flask of rhythm & blues and a splash of surf and you'll have the exciting sound of the Woggles. Signing with Little Steven Van Zandt's Wicked Cool Records in 2006, their latest effort for the label is 2013's "The Big Beat." The title is a nod to famed DJ Alan Freed's short lived weekly prime time TV rock'n'roll show that predated American Bandstand. Said Freed, "Rock and Roll is a river of music that encompasses elements of rhythm & blues, jazz, rag time, cowboy songs, country songs, and folk... (read more)

La Force (Of Broken Social Scene) - Mercury Lounge
October 10, 2018 - New York

La Force is Ariel Engle, vocalist and newest member of Broken Social Scene. The music of La Force is nocturnal electronic pop, featuring Engle's enchanting vocals over dynamic production. Her presence resounds throughout Broken Social Scene's 2017 album, Hug Of Thunder, lending fluid, commanding lead vocals to the oblique anthem "Stay Happy" and the soaring "Gonna Get Better," leaving an indelible mark on the collective's rousing performances. Stepping up to the role first helmed by the immeasurable talents Leslie Feist, Emily Haines (of Metric), and Amy Millan (of Stars), Engle brings La Force's singularity to the familial energy of Broken Social Scene. Born out of the culmination of AroarA – her musical project with husband and Broken Social Scene bandmate Andrew Whiteman – La Force is a deep reflection on the magic and dismantlement of motherhood; the never-ending tightrope walk of life, and death; and the re-discovery of self. First single "You Amaze Me" layers seductive melodies over restrained electronics. A love song to Whiteman, "You Amaze Me" defines the tender but powerful essence of La Force. Shaped with Warren Spicer of Plants & Animals, and featuring members of Suuns, ... (read more)

Nothing but Thieves - Irving Plaza
October 11, 2018 - New york

NOTHING BUT THIEVES The Japanese art of kintsugi is to take something broken and make it more beautiful than before; shards of ceramic put back together with gold-flecked glue, the cracks a proud part of the object. It's a concept that's central to Broken Machine, the second album from Southend-formed, South-east-based five-piece Nothing But Thieves, whose slow-burning self-titled 2015 debut made them a big deal worldwide– but fractured them too. That debut album found fans in foreign territories first, from Korea to Japan, the States and Europe, and gained the young band respect from pillars of the modern rock community – among them Muse, who took them out as support band on their 2016 arena tour. When the album campaign came to an end in December last year, it was marked with a celebratory homecoming headline gig at landmark venue O2 Academy Brixton - a sure sign that the UK had caught up. "It was a real moment to reflect," says frontman Conor Mason. "We went to school together. We started playing in [guitarist Dom Craik's] garage together. Now we're playing Brixton together, somewhere we've been thousands of times over the years to see bands." As well as being a ce... (read more)

"American Captives: Lena Baker & Sandra Bland" By Connie Winston @ Dixon Place - Dixon Place
Through October 20, 2018 - New York City

After a one-day trial in 1945, an all-white male jury deliberates for under an hour and sentences Lena Baker to death for killing her abusive lover. Three days after being pulled over by a Texas State Trooper in 2015 for not using a turn signal, Sandra Bland was found dead in a Waller County jail cell. In a poignant, visceral 65-minute theatrical experience combining the two stories, Connie Winston's American Captives: Lena Baker & Sandra Bland articulates how little has changed in the relationship between Black women and the United States justice system in 60 years between the deaths of Lena and Sandra. This unapologetic personal accounting - written / performed by Winston and directed by Rhonda "Passion" Hansome - bares new awareness of timeworn atrocities. Six performances only - on Friday and Saturday evenings @ 7:30pm between October 5th and 20th. This Dixon Place commission is made possible, in part, with private funds from The Jerome Foundation, and public funds from NY State Council on the Arts w/the support of Gov Andrew Cuomo & the NY State Legislature.

Ruston Kelly - Mercury Lounge
October 23, 2018 - New York

Ruston Kelly writes and performs the kinds of songs that inspire novels and movies. You could call him a bastard disciple of Kurt Cobain and Townes Van Zandt, and he'd be totally cool with that. He's just as comfortable wearing a cowboy hat as he is in a Slayer t-shirt. His story so far twists and turns through heartbreak and triumph, an overdose and rehab, empty dive bars and packed venues, living everywhere from South Carolina to Brussels, and as he puts it, "finally getting my shit together and proposing to the love of my life." It's this unbelievable experience that informs Ruston's singular style -- a gravelly patchwork of folk lyricism, grunge attitude, country heart, Americana spirit, and rock energy. Not only has he penned songs for Tim McGraw ("Nashville Without You"), Josh Abbott Band ("Front Row Seat"), and more, but his independent solo debut EP Halloween earned acclaim from KCRW, Consequence of Sound, RELIX, Apple Music, and more. He logged countless miles on the road sharing the stage with the likes of The Lumineers and Robert Earl Keen in addition to performing at Bonnaroo and Wakarusa. It's no coincidence that he took to music as an infant. "The first sound I rememb... (read more)

Kikagaku Moyo - Katra Lounge
October 24, 2018 - New York

Kikagaku Moyo/??? (Japanese for Geometric Patterns) is the musical union between five free spirits. Go Kurosawa (drums, Vocals) and Tomo Katsurada (Guitar, Vocals) formed the band in 2012 as a free artist's collective. They met Kotsuguy (Bass) while he was recording noise from vending machines and Akira (Guitar) through their university. On the other side of the world, a small label from Greece was listening and offered to press a limited run of LPs. Interest picked up through the blogging community and the band found tight group of dedicated fans around the globe. Since 2013 the band has released two full lengths, an EP, and several singles. They have toured Australia, the United States, Europe and Japan extensively. Kikagaku Moyo love to connect with people through performing, whether they are playing in a barn deep in a Swedish forest, on a desolate Mediterranean beach, or beside a sleepy river at 2014's Levitation Fest they bring out the magic in everyone present.
