Quickly, Quickly, Naji, Instupendo, Lussx - Mercury Lounge
July 07, 2018 - New York

17 year old music producer from portland, oregon . Naji is a singer-songwriter/producer from Eerie, PA. Naji will be releasing an EP with Soulection later this year, as well as his own self-released EP. His song, Mona Lisa, has charted over 4 million plays since February. Philadelphia electronic artist Instupendo floats into earshot with original downtempo compositions that listeners say they turn to when they feel, or want to feel, a certain way. Dancing Astronaut compared his distinctive sound as "something akin to taking Tycho's work, incepting it into a dreamscape, and slowing it way down", while The Deli Magazine called it "lucid while out of focus; a silken and ethereal logic operating somewhere in the space between trap and ambient." Like many of his peers, Instupendo (aka Aidan Peterson) got his start as a pre-teen on Soundcloud, organically building a fanbase and network of collaborators before venturing onto commercial streaming services in 2016. Within months, his single "Beauty Unit" was featured on Spotify's Fresh Finds and subsequently charted on Billboard's Spotify Viral 50. Successive singles, including "Falling", "Light Lock", and "Comfort Chain", secured addi... (read more)

Gretchen Green and Peggy Shaw, long time La MaMa babies, reunite at La Galleria. Gretchen opened the gallery with Ellen Stewart back in the 80s and ran the program for 10 years. Her last position before she retired and started making art full time was as La MaMa's Managing Director. Gretchen is currently a partner in a gallery in Fort Pierce Florida called "Seriously Mixed Media." Peggy Shaw is a performer, writer, producer and teacher of writing and performance. She co-founded Split Britches and has performed at La MaMa for almost 40 years. Gretchen creates colorful animal portraits from tin cans and other media and Peggy's visual art practice, unlike her performance work, is much more introverted. She paints very personal portraits and familiar landscapes often only shared with her close community of friends, colleagues and family. Both artist have helped shaped the identity of La MaMa as well as the East Village artist community and La Galleria is honored to host an exhibition of their work to close to our 35th season.

Landscapes after Ruskin: Redefining the Sublime - Grey Art Gallery
Through July 07, 2018 - New York

Landscapes after Ruskin: Redefining the Sublime explores contemporary painting, photography, sculpture, and video through the lens of influential English art critic and social thinker John Ruskin (1819–1900), who argued that the artist's principal responsibility is "truth to nature." For Ruskin, this "truth" was more than just a technical representation of the natural world on canvas but also a depiction of it as experienced by humankind. In Landscapes after Ruskin, guest curator and artist Joel Sternfeld examines how, in a world overwhelmed by industrial development and environmental uncertainty, contemporary artists are discovering new beauties and terrors associated with nature and, in so doing, invoking an updated sense of the sublime. The exhibition features a wide range of works by over fifty artists, including Richard Artschwager, Christiane Baumgartner, Katherine Bradford, Spencer Finch, Neil Jenney, Raymond Pettibon, Michal Rovner, Ai Weiwei, and David Wojnarowicz, among others. Organized by the Hall Art Foundation, the exhibition will be accompanied by an illustrated catalogue.

THE HOLLYWOOD ADRIANA, A Cautionary Tale of Damaged Good - Dixon Place

Inspired by the murder of silent movie icon Ramon Novarro, the worlds of film, ballet, and opera; Sarah Bernhardt, Maya Plisetskaya, Hector Berlioz; hustlers, drag queens, athletes, and altar boys, all converge in a surreal universe of obsession, love, innocence lost, murder, suicide, and catharsis.

Hazlewood, Trokon Nagbe, Macon Reed, Gabriela Salazar, Patrice Renee Washington, and Chris Watts. Marking the culmination of their residency at Abrons Arts Center, Not an edge but a hinge presents works across a range of media, including painting, sculpture, video, and site-specific installation, and is organized by AIRspace curatorial residents Christian Camacho-Light and Alexis Wilkinson. Aligning with Abrons' wide-ranging multidisciplinary performance and educational programming, Not an edge but a hinge attends to difference within shared time and space. Occupying the building's three main galleries, the exhibition takes a kaleidoscopic approach in order to honor the complex and shifting affinities between individual artworks. In the exhibition, several works withhold the figure from view, privileging the outline or trace over direct representation, investigating notions of disclosure or voyeurism. Others establish an indexical, material, or metaphorical relationship to place, often marking displacement or loss.... (read more)

Twilight Open House: Kiki Smith at Eldridge - Museum at Eldridge Street
Through August 22, 2018 - New York

We're swinging open the grand doors of the Museum after-hours for three special evenings welcoming art lovers to our latest exhibition. Kiki Smith titled this show Below the Horizon because she felt "that's when we have access to the stars." Stars are a consistent theme in her work, nowhere more so than here at Eldridge, where stars fill the stunning stained glass window she designed with architect Deborah Gans. Returning to the Museum for this building-wide show, Smith has selected 50 works in a range of mediums – from works on paper to photographs to sculpture. The exhibition features pieces never before shown in this way – in a dramatically designed National Historic Landmark, originally built in 1887 as a house of worship. Don't miss this chance to have after-work drinks with the art of Kiki Smith!
