Life Is But A Dream

Maria José Cabral - Agora Gallery
Through June 12, 2018 - New York

Life Is But A Dream Maria José Cabral's mixed-media works stem from an ongoing engagement with leisure-time as the generative source underlying authentic relationships. Often working with pictures archived in a family photo album, Cabral has opted to recreate these very scenes from memory, allowing the fallibility of recollected events to color her subject-matter with a lush sheen of exotic colors. This syncretic blend of photography, acrylics, and mixed-media painting lends her works a uniqueness which can't be wholly reduced to any one medium or technique she puts to use, or even the photos that provided an original source of inspiration. Cabral's Dumper majestically captures the way memory shades into fantasy. A group of figures is seated in an industrial "dumper." Their faces are all but indiscernible, hued by a popping fluorescent blue. Almost eerily, each figure appears to be looking away from viewer's vantage point — less like they were posing than as if they were transplanted from another pictorial plane to where the presently sit. In the background, psychedelic swaths of primary colors seem to dynamically converge, creating a sense of place whose elementary parts... (read more)

Life Is But A Dream

Toni Altenstrasser - Agora Gallery
Through June 12, 2018 - New York

Life Is But A Dream Based in Passau, Germany, artist toNI Altenstrasser uses oil and acrylic paints, pen, and chalk pastels to create enigmatic, abstract compositions. In his search for new methods of expression, Altenstrasser intuitively and repeatedly revises his works, this process often becoming his primary subject matter. Using gestural marks to render animal forms and figures, Altenstrasser's works make visible unseen layers of the human condition. In his brooding composition titled Thought II, Altenstrasser divides the composition into realms of opposing black and white. Rogue marks and lines are layered vigorously in an effort to obscure an unknown image. The artist's Rote Giraffe für W.Parker is a more lighthearted picture imaging a small, crude red giraffe floating on an eggplant and auburn background. A blue heart-like shape in the corner of the picture plane further reveals the playful nature of the work. Finally, Market-place employs a bustling composition with expressive figures amid shadowy, bodily outlines. Richly textured and full of movement, the image captures the dynamism of a busy, hurried market.

Olga Loschinina - Agora Gallery
Through June 12, 2018 - New York

Life Is But A Dream The photographs of Olga Loschinina depict stunning scenery from around the globe. From the extreme climates of the Antarctic ice fields to the deserts of Africa, from oceans and mountains and everywhere in between, Olga is able to combine her love of travel with a passion for photography, creating breathtaking images that appear almost fantastical in their natural splendor. Whether shrouded in mist or bathed in the pigmented rays of a once-in-a-lifetime sunrise, Olga is adept at capturing the delicate color and elusive atmosphere of these locations with her lens. She says her goal in her work is to witness different aspects of life, from bustling metropolises to far flung environs, encapsulating and reviving them so that she can prolong the experience for herself and her viewers. She also utilizes her images to underscore the connection between humans and the natural world. Born in Moscow, Olga used to work in finance but also studied photography in photography schools. She has been a practicing photographer for four years, and one can find her work displayed in New York, Switzerland, and Russia.

Amber Warren - Agora Gallery
Through June 12, 2018 - New York

New York based artist Amber Warren uses diverse materials such as resin, modeling paste, metal, and paper to create dimensional, abstract paintings. Drawing her subject matter from nature and often incorporating found objects into her pictures, Warren's compositions are richly textured and boldly gestural. Her nonrepresentational works push the boundaries of two dimensional painting, the layering of pigments and materials creating a sense of both physical and psychological depth. In Warren's Wave and Flame , frothy swirls of tonal pigment capture the visceral sensations of water and fire respectively. The tactile surfaces vary in opacity and reflectiveness as thick swaths and thin pools of pigment coincide. The artist's mixed media collage titled Paper Garden 1 is an especially densely textured picture. Magenta, lavender, orange, and red curls of pigment populate the canvas in an abstract whirlpool. Finally, After juxtaposes neon pink and yellow splashes of paint with darker puddles of black and navy. Forming thin rivulets, the colors merge into rippled, wet patches, creating layers of interest and defying the expectations of the two dimensional picture p... (read more)

Descending into Escapism Series 1: Vaydra Wright - Agora Gallery
Through June 12, 2018 - NYC

Vaydra Wright’s digital collages utilize layers of color and pattern to create surreal compositions responding to psychological stresses endured by the artist. Created as coping strategies, these works are visual documents of the sensations the artist feels during periods of dissociation, a psychological condition in which one detaches from reality in response to traumatic events and triggering stimuli. The spiraling, inverted, kaleidoscopic works often function as Rorschach tests and represent the psychological repercussion of trauma through digitally manipulated abstractions. Working in complete isolation and without formal training, Vaydra’s works are entirely personal depictions of her unique experiences. In her works titled A Kaleidoscope View of Inner City Buildings and Barren Landscape, Vaydra layers geometrical grids and architectural geometries with rippling reflections, the imagery mirrored into infinity to create compositions that are at once claustrophobic and expanding, binding and limitless. Original Bug Series features illusionistic shapes leaping from the picture plane, while Reflection of My Stolen Childhood captures dueling sensations of balance and chaos in i... (read more)

Life Is But A Dream - Agora Gallery
Through June 12, 2018 - NYC

This spring Agora Gallery proudly presents Life Is But A Dream, a group show exploring the surreality of memory and identity in a world too often constructed to resemble a mere product of the shelf of popular culture. Comprising 17 artists, the primary link joining them together is how memory can be reshaped by the imagination. These artists all share in examining the content of what they remember, with social and familial life acting as a lens through which they reexamine recollected moments. Maria José Cabral, toNI Altenstrasser, Jennifer Morrow, Olivia O'Keeffe, Margret Carde, and Katja Yoon use memoried experience as the raw material out of which they synthesize dream-like scenes. By contrast, Gottfried Roemer and Benny De Grove use the realist precedent of the photograph to create defamiliarized landscapes and portraits. Amber Warren and GLIL advantageously use mixed-media and collage techniques, respectively, to realize free-associative commentary on their chosen subjects. And Svetlana Nelson, Olga Loschinina, Samantha Messias, Jutta Schulte, Ifat Shatzky, Paciel González, and Satoco Yamamoto utilize a wide breadth of media to challenge the presumption that memory can... R.U.R., which stands for Rossum's Universal Robots, presents a series of new, interactive video installations based on Karel Kapek's 1920 science fiction play of the same name in which the term "robot" was first used. The play explores the speed of technological progress and the uncertainties and dehumanization that occurs as a result of the robotization of human interactions. In Hartung's adaptation, the original play is re-written through photographs, costumes and interactive videos that pose the question: Why do men want to create robots that look human? Tommy Hartung's works analyze the creation and dissemination of cultural narratives by fragmenting and deconstructing his source material. Through the montages of stop motion animation and found footage, Hartung uses the themes of modernism as his subject matter. His sculptures, the subjects of his videos, are assembled through scavenged material to form hybri... (read more)
