David Gibson Quintet - Smalls Jazz Club
March 10, 2019 - New York

Trombonist David Gibson has enjoyed a varied musical career which is deeply rooted in the genres of jazz and funk. While reared in Oklahoma, Gibson's musical journey steered him to New York City. Jazz luminary Curtis Fuller said about Gibson, "Out of all the young players I hear in the music today, David is one of very few who speaks the language of jazz". David's newest recording, "BOOM!" is currently available from Posi-tone Records. It's his third for Posi-tone and marks a return to the traditional jazz quintet structure, featuring Josh Evans-trumpet, Theo Hill-piano, Alex Claffy-bass, Kush Abadey-drums, and Gibson's sonorous trombone. This fiery collection of musicians breathes life into eight new compositions in addition to newly minted arrangements of Tom McIntosh's "The Cup Bearers" and Eric Clapton's "Change the World". This iteration of Gibson's ensemble continues down the eclectic path he's been traversing for years and at times throughout, their new recording evokes modern post-bop, electric Miles and the piquant taste of the present day. There's something for everyone contained in this musical album. Gibson's early experience in New York had him performing with Slide ... (read more)

The Sporkful World Tour, with Guests Madhur Jaffrey and Priya Krishna - The Greene Space
March 11, 2019 - New York

In 1973, Madhur Jaffrey's cookbook, An Invitation to Indian Cooking, introduced many Americans to the world of Indian cuisine. Since then, Jaffrey has penned dozens more cookbooks and evolved her work as Indian food has become more familiar to Americans. This May, she releases her latest work: Madhur Jaffrey's Instantly Indian Cookbook Priya Krishna is a food writer for The New York Times and Bon Appetit. Her forthcoming first cookbook, Indian-ish: Recipes and Antics From A Modern American Family, includes many classic recipes. But Krishna also tears down the walls between Indian cuisine and the many other cuisines that have influenced her. Through Jaffrey and Krishna's work, we see Indian food assimilating into mainstream American culture over the last 45 years. And that raises questions: How exactly does an immigrant cuisine assimilate? When it does, what compromises are made? What's gained and what's lost? What does this process tell us about the way immigrants themselves assimilate? And where does the cuisine go from here? Join us for this special live taping of the James Beard Award-winning food podcast The Sporkful, featuring Jaffrey and Krishna, and hosted by Dan Pash... (read more)

Marcia Ball at the Loft - 3/11 - City Winery
March 11, 2019 - New York

Fifty years have passed in a flash," says Texas-born, Louisiana-raised pianist, songwriter and vocalist Marcia Ball of her long and storied career. Ball, the 2018 Texas State Musician Of The Year, has won worldwide fame and countless fans for her ability to ignite a full-scale roadhouse rhythm and blues party every time she takes the stage. Her rollicking Texas boogies, swampy New Orleans ballads and groove-laden Gulf Coast blues have made her a one-of-a-kind favorite with music lovers all over the world. With each new release, her reputation as a profoundly soulful singer, a boundlessly talented pianist and a courageous, inventive songwriter continues to grow. Her love of the road has led to years of soul-satisfying performances at festivals, concert halls and clubs. The New York Times says, "Marcia Ball plays two-fisted New Orleans barrelhouse piano and sings in a husky, knowing voice about all the trouble men and women can get into on the way to a good time." The Houston Chronicle says simply, "She's as perfect as an artist can be." With her new album, Shine Bright, Ball set out to, in her words, "Make the best Marcia Ball record I could make." March 12, 2019 - New York

Alto saxophonist Justin Robinson was born August 14, 1968, in Manhattan. He first picked up a horn at the age of 13, and honed his sound while attending the High School of Music and Arts (LaGuardia High School) in New York. Robinson developed a passion for the alto sax and, from the influences of Charlie Parker and Jackie McLean, crafted his own distinctive sound. Robinson has collaborated with eminent artists such as the Harper Brothers, Cecil Brooks III, Abbey Lincoln, Diana Ross, Little Jimmy Scott, and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, The Dizzy Gillespie All Star Band, and most recently, The Roy Hargrove Big Band in addition to the Roy Hargrove Quintet. Justin Robinson wields a hefty portfolio: joined Harper Brothers at 18, debuted on Verve at 22, a decade's-worth of star sideman gigs. All of that hang-time paid off with his 1998 recording The Challenge on Arabesque Records. Penning six of the compositions, selecting an inspired posse of young ringers (Ron Blake, tenor sax; Stephen Scott, piano; Dwayne Burno, bass; Dion Parsons, drums), Robinson also produced the whole shebang. Robinson also released as a solo artist Justin Time in 1991 with Verve Music Group label. It was produ... (read more)

Muna Tseng, Alvin Eng, Karoline Kan, and Angel Yau will each present from their oeuvre varying from a reading, spoken word, video and music – dedicated to the theme of the evening: NüVoices of the Diaspora. As part of the evening we invite the audience to bring along their own poems or brief excerpts of writing, old or new, fiction or non-fiction, to share in the last half hour of the program. There is no obligation to bring anything, however, and we are looking forward to an incredible evening filled with stories and creativity. NüVoices is an international collective of writers, journalists, artists and supporters who celebrate the creative work of women who work on subjects related to China and the greater diaspora. The group started when a group of female journalists and friends felt enraged that sources and 'experts' on China highlighted in media were predominantly men, and that there was a prevalence of ‘manels’ in China. In response we started a directory of nearly 500 female expe... (read more)

Buster Poindexter at the Loft (Early Show) - 3/15 - City Winery
March 15, 2019 - New York

Today, the words "blues" and "shouting" are, alas, inextricably linked, but what about the tradition of mellow blues crooners that extended through Charles Brown, Nat King Cole and, in their more romantic moments, Joe Williams and Ray Charles? "Buster Poindexter" (nee David Johansen) first attracted attention as a glam rock pioneer (in the New York Dolls, with whom he still tours) and then as an early MTV idol (with "Hot Hot Hot"). Yet with his big, deep, resonant voice, Buster Poindexter is most impressive as a crooner and occasional belter of ballads in the classic R&B tradition. His ongoing run affirms the point that however you know him, the artist known as Buster Poindexter, complete with his one-liners and longer comic monologues (not to mention his signature pompadour), is one of the most endearing and enduring entertainers currently trodding the boards in New York.

March 16, 2019 - New York

Celebrate Women's History Month with fun-loving powerhouse all-gal sextet ISLE of KLEZBOS, dubbed a "paradigm-shifting, brilliantly tuneful klezmer group" by New York Music Daily. Recently returned from 20th anniversary West Coast tours, the band has also played from Vienna to Vancouver. Formed in 1998, approaching Yiddish tradition with both playful irreverence and soulful respect, the group combines stellar talents (alumnae of Juilliard, Eastman, Harvard and more) to form a unique repertoire also noted for exceptional, genre-defying original compositions. As described by The New Yorker, "Isle of Klezbos tests the elasticity of the genre": Beyond boisterous dance rambunction, mystical melodies, haunting retro tango, love-songs, lullabies, Soviet Jewish surprises, and Big Band-stylings for long-lost Yiddish pop standards, the ensemble also presents new klezmer reggae, klezmerengue and their very latest: Fabulous, Bronx-based klezmer boogaloo. The group's creative chemistry and stratospheric solos have garnered ISLE of KLEZBOS appearances on CBS Sunday Morning, Showtime's The L Word, and Chamber Music America programs, as well as dozens of film soundtracks. Grant Stewart Quartet - Smalls Jazz Club
March 17, 2019 - New York

Born in Toronto, Canada on June 4, 1971, Grant Stewart was exposed to the music of Charlie Parker, Wardell Gray and Coleman Hawkins by his father, a high-school English teacher and semiprofessional guitarist. Father and son often played together for hours on end. It was through these early experiences and his father's encouragement that Stewart first developed a strong ear for melody, style, and improvisation. He began with the alto saxophone at age 10, and when he was 14 his first teacher, noted Toronto bandleader Pete Schofield, invited him to play professionally in Schofield's Big Band. At 17 he switched to the tenor saxophone and was soon playing with such master saxophonists as Pat Labarbara and Bob Mover. Stewart considers Mover to be one of his greatest teachers and among his strongest influences along with Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Don Byas, and Lester Young. Since moving to New York City at the age of 19, Stewart has studied with such masters as Donald Byrd, Barry Harris, and Joe Lovano, and performed with Curtis Fuller, John Hendricks, Clark Terry, Etta Jones, Bill Charlap, Frank Gant, Dan Barret, Bob Mover, Brad Mehldau, Russell Malone, Larry Goldings, Peter Bernstei... Jon Beshay Quartet - Smalls Jazz Club
March 17, 2019 - New York

"I play music because I like to listen to music, and when I'm playing I'm in charge of what I'm hearing." Jonathan Beshay-jazz saxophonist, bandleader, and composer-says that there's no other agenda when his group takes the bandstand. Fortunately for audiences, Beshay likes to hear good music. His first role models were the old masters of jazz (John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, and Lester Young) but it would be a mistake to assume that modern music isn't fair game for Beshay. Artists such as Walter Smith and John Ellis make their way onto his list of influences, all uttered in the same breath as Coleman Hawkins and Woody Shaw. When pressed, he compares his musical process to the late Mulgrew Miller's; something that is rooted deep down in the history of jazz, but has blossomed outward into an art that is unique and new.

Through March 22, 2019 - New York

NEW YORK – The Jane Hartsook Gallery is pleased to present new work by Rirkrit Tiravanija. Tiravanija has transformed the gallery into a familiar environment that invites visitors to take a minute to sit, relax, have a drink and contemplate pottery. Tiravanija is known for creating similar installations and events that emphasize social engagement, as well as his traditional material-based art. He made a name for himself in the early '90s by eschewing typical visual arts practices and engaging audiences by cooking for them. He has continued this practice throughout the decades in nearly all subsequent installations and exhibitions, including during his 2017 residency at Greenwich House Pottery—cooking 3-inch thick porterhouse steak in his thrown custom-formulated flameware to make lunch for the Pottery's community. In Untitled (Billy Wilder doesn't like green tea), Tiravanija once again brings his material-based artwork together with his social practice. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Tiravanija is a Thai artist widely recognized as one of the most influential artists of his generation. His work defies media-based description, as his practice combines traditional object making, p... (read more)
