Cindy Rainne - The Groove
June 17, 2019 - New York

Singer-songwriter Cindy Rainne was taunted and teased as a young girl. Her coping mechanism became crafting an effervescent exterior—to outsiders, she was bubbly, filled with sunshine, all smiles. It was a disguise further enhanced by her prodigious musical talents. Whether she was making a musical appearance or a social one, it was all a performance. However, through using her musical gifts to heal her soul, she's found the courage to face down the specters of her past. Now, she steps into the light with The Mask, a masterful debut EP that promotes self-love and self-expression. "I spent a lot of time being who I thought people wanted me to be. Working on this album had me digging to figure out who I was, and giving myself permission to be that person," reveals the Brooklyn, New York-based artist. Cindy calls her music "clearwater soul," it's an elixir of raw truths and organic instrumentation, and its earthy purity nourishes the soul. Within this stream of expression are elements of classical music, jazz, pop, Caribbean rhythms, opera, gospel, soul, and R&B. Cindy's lyrics are sassy and sensitive, she writes from her own redemptive journey of reclaiming her dignity and identi... (read more)

European Sound Series: Jean-Michel Pilc - France - Blue Note
June 17, 2019 - New York

Jean-Michel Pilc presented by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in New York "What I'm in search of is exceptions," jazz pianist Jean-Michel Pilc explains. His new live concert recording, Essential, due out May 10, 2011 on Motéma Music, intimately captures an exceptional series of improvisations on both brand-new and classic themes. While there are dazzling passages here that demand Pilc's formidable technique, there's also a striking simplicity, directness and an irrepressible passion. Blending vividly lyrical passages with otherworldly, reflective interludes, unexpected dissonances and playful digressions, it's a vivid display of the individuality that American audiences have come to expect since his arrival in New York in 1995. Of this recording, "It represents who I was that night," Pilc explains. "What I do is pure improvisation. Sometimes you play a concert and you don't feel like it's natural – this concert had the feeling that I have at home playing the piano, completely relaxed. This particular night, there was nothing of that 'live performance thing,' having to convince people, and squeeze things in. This was music being made for the sake of music. Everything h... Gaelic Storm at The Loft - 6/18 - City Winery
June 18, 2019 - 2nd floor New York

It's hard to imagine a band just coming into their own after 20 years of success, but that's exactly what makes a true anomaly. This multi-national, Celtic juggernaut grows stronger with each live performance, and as you can imagine, after two decades and over 2000 shows, it is a true force to be reckoned with. With their latest release, Go Climb a Tree, their music has never sounded more representative of themselves as musicians and as live performers. The band attributes their continued success to their fanatic audience, and it's a well-diversified crowd for sure. The country-music folks adore the storytelling, the bluegrass-heads love the instrumentals, Celtic fans love their devotion to tradition, and the rockers simply relish the passion they play their instruments with. Each band member, in their own way, expresses a deep gratitude for their fans, but it's best summed up in the words of Patrick Murphy: "The fans are the ones that have given us this life. We're here for them." On Go Climb a Tree, co-founders of Gaelic Storm, Steve Twigger and Patrick Murphy, along with longtime friend and co-writer Steve Wehmever, are again at the helm of song-writing duties. The album has e... (read more)

Lucette at The Loft - The Loft at City Winery
June 18, 2019 - New York

On her sophomore album Deluxe Hotel Room, indie-pop artist Lucette turns her title phrase into a metaphor for experiences both highly specific and widely familiar: fleeting romance, emotional displacement, isolation, the gulf between the presumed glamour of the artist's life and the reality of getting by. Produced by Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Sturgill Simpson at The Butcher Shoppe in Nashville, Deluxe Hotel Room unfolds in endlessly contrasting layers of feeling. "A lot of joy and a lot of pain has happened for me in hotel rooms," says the Canadian artist otherwise known as Lauren Gillis. "I've stayed in hotel rooms I'd never be able to afford myself and, unfortunately, I've been put in extremely uncomfortable situations in hotel rooms. Also, hearing about a lot of the pain women in the entertainment industry have been through in hotel rooms urged me to write the title track to this album."

Luluc at The Loft - City Winery
June 19, 2019 - New York

We spray our hair into submission, upright to attention. Marching to no orders, imagination has no borders. Well lucky that.' "Me and Jasper," from Luluc's third album Sculptor, is a confident challenge to small-town insularity, lilting yet vigilant, and championed by a defiant guitar solo from the band's friend J Mascis. Gangster Mob Prohibition Pub Crawl - Lt. Petrosino Square
June 19, 2019 - New York

In 1920, the United States enforced the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which banned liquor production, public consumption and the selling of anything alcoholic. This catapulted the criminal world and helped the mob monopolize and grow their illegal business of alcohol. It made some of the most vicious gangsters gain fame and fortune. Illegal bars known as speakeasies opened by the thousands and served bootleg liquor to a thirsty public. On this tour, you will walk in the footsteps of the gangsters and visit some of the watering holes that served illegal liquor during Prohibition. There you can sip a craft cocktail served by some of the top bartenders in New York City. While sipping on your now "legal" alcoholic beverage you will hear stories of the Mafia and how it infiltrated into society. At the end of the tour you will be a "wiseguy" about Prohibition and the Italian mob. Further, you will stop in for some of the best pizza in all of New York City. The tour kicks off at Lt. Petrosino Square.

Earth - Le Poisson Rouge
June 19, 2019 - Nw York

18+ Earth is an American musical group based in Seattle, Washington, formed in 1990 and led by guitarist Dylan Carlson. Earth's music is mostly instrumental, and can be divided into two distinct stages. Their early work grew out of the Seattle-area grunge scene and is recognized as pioneering the genre of drone doom — an experimental offshoot of doom metal, characterized by droning, minimalist, lengthy, and repetitive structures. Earth's early albums were usually recorded as a duo (Carlson and a bass guitarist), and could be seen as a variation of the experimental doom-influenced metal of The Melvins. Earth currently features a markedly different sound, slow-paced and lengthy, but now with a drummer and featuring strong elements of country music and jazz. Dylan Carlson founded the band in 1990 along with Slim Moon and Greg Babior. Carlson has remained the core of the band's line-up throughout its changes. Current players have included: Adrienne Davies on drums, Lori Goldston on Cello, Karl Blau on bass, Steve Moore on keys and Don McGreevey on bass.

June 22, 2019 - New York

Msgr. Luigi Giussani is well-known as the founder of the Catholic movement Communion and Liberation. The Sweet Remains at The Loft - City Winery
June 22, 2019 - New York

When Rich Price (Burlington, VT), Greg Naughton (NYC), and Brian Chartrand (Phoenix, AZ) met by chance, at jam-session , in 2008, the three instantly recognized a kinship and musical union, which lead them to overcome geography, and set aside solo-careers to form The Sweet Remains (tSR). Driven by forceful lyrical and melodic writing of three gifted singer-songwriters, their music appeals to fans of contemporary folk-rockers like Jason Mraz, Ray Lamontagne, and John Mayer. It is their lush three-part harmonies, however, which distinguish tSR from throngs of guitar-toting troubadours, reminiscent of super-groups of the 60's and 70's, like the Eagles, Simon & Garfunkel and CSN. Independently amassing over 38 Million Spotify plays, with three acclaimed CDs, a live DVD, and, in 2018, a new feature film, tSR, is positioned for their ever-rising demand to tour. After that chance jam-session, Rich, Greg, and Brian began writing and recording together during breaks in their solo touring. Before long, they played these new pieces, for producer Andy Zulla, who ultimately has collaborated on many of their projects. Together, they recorded tSR's debut CD, Laurel & Sunset. In the fall of 2010... (read more)

Spencer Krug (of Wolf Parade/Moonface) – In The Round - Le Poisson Rouge
June 22, 2019 - Nw York

18+ After fifteen years of writing and performing with projects like Wolf Parade, Sunset Rubdown, Moonface, Swan Lake, and Frog eyes, this prolific artist has finally decided to release and tour the music he makes under his own name – Spencer Krug. First gaining attention in the mid 2000s as co-leader of Montreal's rock'n'roll Wolf Parade, then soon after as the voice and mind behind the chaotic Sunset Rubdown, Krug eventually used the now defunct Moonface as an outlet for his more experimental and sporadic solo material. And while he still writes and sings for the recently reactivated Wolf Parade, there remains in him a need to express something less rock-oriented, something more quiet and strange and introverted. So, returning to his first and favorite instrument, the piano, Krug has ventured back into his own fantastic world of pseudo-classical balladeering; poetic lyricism laced with twisted pop sensibility and jazz mimicry

Read650 presents Stonewall + 50 at The Loft - City Winery
June 23, 2019 - New York

Tickets will be $30 Day of Show 12 writers telling true stories of a repressive world that exploded into paths of freedom 50 years ago. The newspapers called it a "riot" because the straight world lacked the language to describe what happened on the sweltering early morning hours of June 28, 1969. It began with an all-too-common attack by New York City police who never expected their would-be victims to fight back. Like so many revolutions, the Stonewall Uprising began spontaneously in a tiny place no one had ever heard of, and the reverberations from those five days of outrage and resistance have echoed through American history to this day. Twelve of those echoes will ring out on Sunday, June 23 at 2 p.m. at The Loft at City Winery during Stonewall + 50, a showcase production of the popular spoken-word series Read650. This latest curated presentation will feature a dozen straight and LGBTQ writers recalling incidents from their lives that have been colored by what happened at the Stonewall Inn 50 years ago. For the past five years, Read650 has attracted top writers, playwrights, memoirists—Pulitzer Prize winners and first-timers—to read their works before standing room only a... (read more)

The Art of Sexuality - The Playhouse
June 23, 2019 - New York

How can we evolve the societal gaze while celebrating free expression and sexual freedom in a respectful, sex-positive and artistic and authentic way? Where is the line between expression and exploitation, and who has the right to draw it? In a rare roundtable discussion led by 2018 Pulitzer Prize winning art critic Jerry Saltz, artists Marilyn Minter, Xaviera Simmons and Natalie White join Playboy in furthering this and other important dialogues surrounding art, gender and sexuality. Through July 06, 2019 - New York

An edgy, supernatural love story about Aristophanes struggling with his muse in Ancient Greece, written by Matthew Amendt. 423 BCE. The Gods are hungry. The greatest city of her age, Athens has fallen: wracked with plague, war, drink, lust, gods, demons, and a dark fog of nihilism eating away at her light. Censored and labeled a pervert for standing up to the state, a young Aristophanes passes his nights in a haze of booze and sex, spitting into the face of tomorrow with the courage of the damned. When the unlikeliest of heroes emerges, can a guilty, drunken soul become Orpheus and sing life back into the ashes? An edgy supernatural love story costumed in the present but taking place in Ancient Athens’ hedonistic height, The Comedian’s Tragedy is a rollercoaster of violence, love, revenge, low comedy and high ideas. Imagine a play that brings together the best heat, the fire of American Acting, marries it to the icy clarity of Classical Tragedy, and out of the steam of that collision tells a new story of the place we all began. When there’s no tomorrow, what are you doing tonight? Bill McCallum directs a cast of eleven performers with credits spanning Broadway, Off-Broadwa... (read more)
