An ongoing poetry walk showcases the work of acclaimed poet W.S. Merwin, organized in partnership with the Poetry Society of America. Merwin, a former U.S. Poet Laureate who has resided in Hawai'i since the 1970s, uses his in"The best young straight-ahead jazz singer of her generation" (The Wall Street Journal) Brianna Thomas explores the repertoire of the "Queen of Gospel" Mahalia Jackson and the legendary activist Nina Simone, two artists inextricably linked to the life and work of the civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Mahalia Jackson was a friend and supporter of Dr. King, and her gospels and spirituals served as the soundtrack to the civil rights movement. Likewise, Nina Simone's iconic songs of soulful passion and protest honored and were inspired by King's philosophy and leadership. These uplifting musical narratives are expertly laced together in this world premiere by accomplished vocalist Brianna Thomas, who is joined by special guest trombone legend Wycliffe Gordon and an ensemble of powerhouse soloists, including Bruce Harris, James Hurt, and Marvin Sewell.terest in deep ecology to explore the relationship between nature and humans.

United Palace will host a workshop on the emerging field of Social Artistry on Sunday, July 15th, 2018 starting at 9AM. Social Artistry is a state-of-the-art personal training that calls people to become “Social Artists,” or leaders who utilize the dedication, skills, and understanding of an artist and apply them to people and societies around them. Jean Houston, the founder of Social Artistry and a Ph.D., scholar, philosopher and researcher in Human Capacities, will lead the workshop along with various other Social Artists who are masters in their own fields who wish to share their discoveries and discuss their personal findings and experiences. The workshop will provide attendees with the tools to engage in meaningful action through deep exploration of society and layers of the human psyche – mind, body, mythic, and spiritual.
