Valerie Farber is a Brooklyn-based vocalist with an incurable jazz soul. Trained classically on both voice and violin and fed a steady diet of bluegrass at home, her interest in music was developed early as a young girl . It wasn't until she was introduced to jazz that she fell head over heels in love. True to her muse, Valerie has a style driven by experimentation yet grounded in storytelling. Her recent project, the Song Sonnet, is a series that abstractly conveys the life of women in history through a curated collection of tunes. Valerie has collaborated and performed with musicians, DJs and performance artists throughout North America and Europe and self-released her first EP, "so this is love", in February 2016. Through July 16, 2017 - New York

Every Friday and Saturday night at Nowadays, we invite one of our favorite vinyl selectors down to pull out their dream back yard barbecue set to make the vibe right while you have a drink, grab a bite, play ping pong, lie in the grass or all of the above. DJ Wey is Brian Pineyro, who also goes by the names Luis and DJ Python. He's a key musical figure in our neighborhood. RA wrote this about him a couple months back: "For Brian Piñeyro, music isn't just music, and parties aren't just parties. They're also the best tools at his disposal to foster his ideal community based on love and mutual respect." He's our kind of guy. Come for the tunes, and leave Brian's new friend. Seems to be the way it goes…

Eleanor Reissa - 54 Below
July 17, 2017 - New York

The soulful "Yiddish diva" Eleanor Reissa (currently on Broadway in the cast of Indecent) and the Grammy Award-winning "mystical high priest of New Wave Avant-Klez jazz" Frank London (just back from Havana where his Yiddish/Spanish opera premiered ) have been inspiring each other and their audiences in widely-acclaimed concerts for over a decade. Finally appearing at Feinstein's/54 Below to celebrate their first collaborative album, Vilde Mekhaye (Wild Ecstasy), they are backed by London's Klezmer Brass All Stars, featuring the best of a new generation of Klezmer artists: Michael Winograd, Brian Drye, Ron Caswell, Aaron Alexander, Brandon Seabrook and Patrick Farrell. Chris Nicolosi & Friendz: Songs in the Key of Stevie - 54 Below

Following his outrageous and mildly offensive album release show at Feinstein's/54 Below last fall, pint-sized NYC diva Chris Nicolosi is back, baby, whether you like it or not. This time around, however, Chris has left the thong and the fur coat at home, and traded them in for retro sunglasses and a walking stick to channel soul and R&B icon Stevie Wonder in Chris Nicolosi & Friendz: Songs in the Key of Stevie. Join Mr. Nicolosi, his band and special guests as they belt out and get down to Stevie classics as well as some Stevie-inspired selections from Chris' debut LP "Down with the Flippy Floppies." The evening will also include the world premiere screening of Chris' new music video "Knocks Me Off My Feet", a Stevie Wonder cover featuring everyone's favorite pink furball Penelope and YouTube sensation Roo McGoo. If there's a ribbon in the sky for your love [of Chris Nicolosi], then you better be there.

New Rose+Winstons, Junk Boys, Straw Pipes - Union Pool
July 18, 2017 - Brooklyn

Winstons the rugged charm of Virginian songwriting made its way to Brooklyn by way of Winstons, an indie folk duo setting good examples for the city life. After releasing two EPs in 2015, the guys are back with "Without You", an earnest recitation of deeper feeling invoked by the spirits of every great songwriter of the past.Junk Boys Is blues the music of the Devil? The minor third note interval that's the basic ingredient of anything bluesy is famous for conveying a sad feeling, not evil, but - at least according to Wikipedia - "the word [blues] may have come from the term blue devils," and "depending on the religious community a musician belonged to, it was more or less considered as a sin to play this low-down music." W guess that simple fact made the genre very attractive to young rebels... who ended up moving to the more liberal US coasts... Brooklyn's Junk Boys, an obscure band we stumbled upon almost randomly, seems to accept and even promote this notion. Their debut single "Call On Me" (streaming) features a devilish cover art, and an apocaliptic sound at least in part reminiscent of a hammondless and heavier version of The Doors, another band that enjoyed blue references... July 19, 2017 - Red Hook

Pioneer Works is pleased to present Grand Ole Opera, a performative exhibition by Tennessee-born artists Willie Stewart and Brent Stewart. This post-modern opera marks the Stewarts' institutional debut in the United States. Inspired by Wills, the Stewarts' Grand Ole Opera stages immersive theatrical installations that recreate their Southern heritage and childhood experiences, paying homage while complicating and transgressing the clichés of the American South. Shahar Mintz - Rockwood Music Hall
July 19, 2017 - East Village

My name is Shahar Mintz and I'm a singer/songwriter and guitarist. Back in my home land, Israel, I studied classical guitar for five years before moving on to explore the theory of Jazz and modern music. At the age of 19, I was accepted to the Rimon school of Jazz And Contemporary Music. After two years of college I moved to Tel-Aviv and took part in various projects of different musical styles: A joint Jewish-Arabic ensemble that worked towards bringing the two nations together; Tony Ray, a top local Reggae act; and Numerous Rock bands. I was also a part of the Hip-Hop Funk band Hadag Nachash. In 1998 I moved to New York City and joined the local Funk act Milo-Z. I played with Milo for two and a half years, touring mostly the east coast and Europe. While in Europe we had the honor of playing with bands such as The Water Boys, Massive Attack and Patti Smith. I spent the summer of 2002 playing with DJs on the endless party island of Ibiza. In 2003 I acted as band leader and lead guitar player for Warner Bros. recording artist Lizzie West. We spent a year on the road touring 45 states, sharing the stage with artists such as Chris Isaac, The Neville Brothers, Jesse Harris, Berl... (read more)

20 the Fabulous Thunderbirds Feat. Kim Wilson - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
July 20, 2017 - New York

For over 30 years, The Fabulous Thunderbirds have been the quintessential American band. The group's distinctive and powerful sound, influenced by a diversity of musical styles, manifested itself into a unique musical hybrid via such barnburners as "Tuff Enuff" and "Wrap It Up". Co-founder Kim Wilson, the sole original member, still spearheads the group as it evolves into its newest incarnation. "We started as a straight blues band", vocalist and harmonica player Wilson says. "We now incorporate a mixture of a lot of different styles. We're an American music band and we're much higher energy than we were before." In addition to Wilson, the current Thunderbirds line-up features Jay Moeller on drums, Johnny Moeller and Mike Keller on guitar, and Randy Bermudes on bass. In 1979, The Fabulous Thunderbirds released their first self-titled album. Primarily blues influenced, it became a cult classic. "Things were wide open back then," Wilson recalls. "There were hundreds of stages where bands could show what they had." "The thing about the T-Birds is that we can play both blues festival and rock venues," Wilson comments. "We're a diversified band now and everybody's on the... (read more)

Katie Welsh: The Evolution of the Broadway Musical Heroine - 54 Below
July 21, 2017 - New York

Katie Welsh returns to Feinstein's/54 Below in her brand new show, The Evolution of the Broadway Musical Heroine. In this evening of song, Katie travels through the decades, from the 1940s to the 2010s, on a quest to understand how Broadway's leading ladies have changed over time. For example, what makes a Rodgers & Hammerstein heroine different from a Sondheim heroine? How do our favorite female characters navigate the world of relationships in similar and different ways? Katie considers these questions as she sings songs from a range of beloved musicals, including Oklahoma!, South Pacific, Bells Are Ringing, Anyone Can Whistle, Sweet Charity, Jesus Christ Superstar, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and many more.

O-Town - Rocks Off
July 23, 2017 - New York

O-TOWN In 1999, ABC began airing one of the first reality shows in major network history, "Making the Band", which chronicled the formation and rise to success of the boy band, O-Town. The public tuned in to watch as Trevor Penick, Jacob Underwood, Erik-Michael Estrada, Ashley Parker Angel, & Dan Miller signed with Clive Davis' J Records, released the #1 singles "Liquid Dreams"and "All or Nothing", and achieved platinum success with their debut album. Despite their success, the band broke up in 2004 both to escape an unfair record contract and to pursue individual endeavors. After a crash course in the entertainment industry in their early twenties, the guys have enjoyed branching off into different facets of the entertainment business. Their first experience left them with a desire to become more educated, seeing first hand how incredibly complicated (and sometimes corrupt) the industry can be. And now, after 10 years apart, Trevor, Jacob, Erik, and Dan are reuniting as friends with a renewed passion for making music together again. "This one's for the fans and everyone who supported us from the beginning."– O-Town With the help of his older brother, Ryan's new band became one ... (read more)
