David Shields + Laura Kipnis: The Trouble with Men - Strand Book Store
March 22, 2019 - New York

David Shields's The Trouble with Men: Reflections on Sex, Love, Marriage, Porn, and Power is an immersion into the perils, limits, and possibilities of human intimacy. All at once a love letter to his wife, a nervy reckoning with his own fallibility, a meditation on the impact of porn on American culture, and an attempt to understand marriage (one marriage, the idea of marriage, all marriages), The Trouble with Men is exquisitely balanced between the personal and the anthropological, nakedness and restraint. While unashamedly intellectual, it's also irresistibly readable and extremely moving. Over five increasingly intimate chapters, Shields probes the contours of his own psyche and marriage, marshalling a chorus of other voices that leaven, deepen, and universalize his experience; his goal is nothing less than a deconstruction of eros and conventional masculinity. Masterfully woven throughout is an unmistakable and surprisingly tender cri de coeur to his wife. The risk and vulnerability on display are in the service of radical candor, acerbic wit, real emotion, and profound insight—exactly what we've come to expect from Shields, who, in an open invitation to the reader, leaves eve... Rock This Town! Backstage in Cleveland: The Stories You Never Heard & the Swag You Never Saw - The Cutting Room
March 22, 2019 - New York

Fran Belkin's collection of t-shirts wound up in boxes in the attic, until one day she realized these mementos—chronicling over thirty years of Cleveland rock and roll history—could illustrate the incredible story of a most unusual family business: Belkin Productions. The shirts and swag paint a picture of the times, the music, the bands and the concert promotion company her husband Jules and his brother Mike built from the back room of their father's clothing store into a powerhouse on the national music scene. And unlike the concert tees the rest of us wore, these shirts were designed and produced in very small numbers as swag for the bands and crew, rarely seen beyond backstage. In Rock This Town!, Fran's collection is artfully woven together with vintage snapshots, concert photography, and intimate stories—shared by the Belkin Productions crew who lived them. Rock photographer Janet Macoska calls this book "one of the only memory albums ever made that gives an inside glimpse at concert production and promotion." This book is for those of us who were out front, standing drenched in a World Series of Rock downpour, singing along to every word of our favorite song, Bic lighters in... (read more)

Voice of My City: Jerome Robbins and New York - Lincoln Center
Through March 23, 2019 - New York

Jerome Robbins was an inveterate observer, seeker, and creator. In diaries, drawings, watercolors, paintings, story scenarios, poems—and, especially, in dance—he reimagined the world around him. And New York dominated that world, where he was born one-hundred years ago and where he lived his entire adult life. Ideas of New York have long inspired artists but often the city serves as a backdrop in an artwork rather than the basis for plot, theme, and meaning. Robbins put the city at the center of his artistic imaginings. From Fancy Free—his breakout hit ballet in 1944—to the musical West Side Story on stage (1957) and screen (1961) and the ballets N.Y. Export: Opus Jazz (1958) and Glass Pieces (1983), Robbins explored the joys, struggles, grooves, routines, and aspirations of New York. And in recreating the city around him on stage, Robbins found a place for himself. Voice of My City traces Robbins' life and dances alongside the history of New York, inspiring viewers to see the city as both a muse and a home.

The show will feature recent paintings that address current divisions in a globalized world—class struggles, migrations, and gender inequalities—echoing the writings of socially conscious French novelist Édouard Louis.
