Anatomical Illustrations' from the Rare Book Room at the New York Academy of Medicine - Atlas Obscura
July 21, 2017 - New York

Discover the fascinating history of medicine's depictions of the human body through the New York Academy of Medicine's rich collection. During this intimate daytime session inside the New York Academy of Medicine's beautiful rare book room, we'll be guided by two stewards as we look through a selection of curious historic anatomical illustrations. Perusing these books, you'll discover that the first full-scale attempts to illustrate the human body began in the 16th century and featured skeletons and partially dissected figures. Many of these, sometimes called "muscle men" and "flayed men," were very beautiful. Many of these depictions, innovative in their presentation of bones and muscle groups, were concerned not only with accuracy, but also with the nature of death. We'll explore the ways in which shifting attitudes towards the body and the development of new technologies, including printing techniques, photography, and x-ray, changed the way artists rendered anatomy over time.

ONVERSATIONS SEASON-RELATED · EXHIBITION-RELATED Handmade Computers with Taeyoon Choi What is computer, really? Computer is an idea that's evolved over time. The sleek machines we use day-to-day are made from elements extracted from the earth, and every bit of data is actually something, somewhere. And underneath the operating systems, there's a history that needs to be examined. Let's build a computer, from its most fundamental elements: Adder, Clock, and Memory. By handmaking a computer, soldering electronic components, we may find an elegance in the abstraction and repetition of computational logic that can be only describe as "poetic." The 1-Bit Computer Kit is an open-source tool and curriculum for making computing more accessible. By learning how computers work on a fundamental level, participants can gain agency and imagine a reciprocal relationship with technology. We can make technology more approachable by giving access to tools and ideas and demystifying computer science. We've known Jenny and Anthony for a while, and whether they're kicking it around the neighborhood or traveling the world, they're always having a good time (and usually enjoying a dance). Exhibited in the darkness, the piece is comprised of five narrators from five different continents reciting the story of Echo from Ovid's Metamorphoses, while the protracted echos created by the architecture allow visitors to visualize the space of the Field Station. This project is made possible by an Ella Fountain Pratt Emerging Artists Grant from the Durham Arts Council with support from the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural & Cultural Resources + a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant. This project is sponsored by Arup and Genelec. Through September 08, 2017 - Houston

Houston artist Adela Andea is known for transforming indoor spaces. Her installations create sensory experiences for her viewers. In Arts Brookfield's latest exhibition, It's Unreal!, Andea uses LED lights and various recycled plastic materials to provoke a dialogue about the interaction between people and new technologies. Of her "conversations in light," Andea says, "My work relies on human-made materials to create artificial environments that suggest 'beauty' assigned to the natural landscapes or environments. My installations insist on the visual transformation of inorganic into organic matter, and the blending of the organic with geometric." Curated by Sally Reynolds. ABOUT ADELA ANDEA Born in Romania in 1976, Adela Andea came to the United States in 1999. Her work was included in several exhibitions in California, Pennsylvania, New York and Texas. She graduated Valedictorian and Summa Cum Laude from the Painting program at the University of Houston. This Ever New Self: Thoreau and His Journal - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through September 10, 2017 - New York

Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862) occupies a lofty place in American cultural history. He spent two years in a cabin by Walden Pond and a single night in jail, and out of those experiences grew two of this country's most influential works: his book Walden and the essay known as "Civil Disobedience." But his lifelong journal—more voluminous by far than his published writings—reveals a fuller, more intimate picture of a man of wide-ranging interests and a profound commitment to living responsibly and passionately. This Ever New Self: Thoreau and His Journal brings together nearly one hundred items in the most comprehensive exhibition ever devoted to the author. Marking the 200th anniversary of Thoreau's birth and organized in partnership with the Concord Museum in his hometown of Concord, Massachusetts, the show centers on the journal he kept throughout his life and its importance in understanding the essential Thoreau. More than twenty of Thoreau's journal notebooks are shown along with letters and manuscripts, books from his library, pressed plants from his herbarium, and important personal artifacts. Also featured are the only two photographs for which he sat during his lifetime,... (read more)

Henry James and American Painting - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through September 10, 2017 - New York

The analogy between the art of the painter and the art of the novelist is, so far as I am able to see, complete. Their inspiration is the same, their process (allowing for the different quality of the vehicle), is the same, their success is the same. They may learn from each other, they may explain and sustain each other. Their cause is the same, and the honour of one is the honour of another. Henry James and American Painting is the first exhibition to explore the author's deep and lasting interest in the visual arts and their profound impact on the literature he produced. Offering a fresh perspective on the master novelist, the show reveals the importance of James's friendships with American artists such as John La Farge (1835–1910), John Singer Sargent (1856–1925), and James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903). While the author decided early on that the pictorial arts were not to be the arena in which he would work, the painterly quality of his writing has enthralled readers for over a century. Co-curated by acclaimed novelist Colm Tóibín and Declan Kiely, head of the Morgan's Department of Literary and Historical Manuscripts, the exhibition includes a rich and eclectic selection... A Supple Perimeter - Lower Manhattan Cultural Council
Through September 24, 2017 -

Lower Manhattan Cultural Council's Arts Center at Governors Island hosts LMCC's summer exhibition, A Supple Perimeter, by artist, educator, and writer Kameelah Janan Rasheed. Free and open to the public, the exhibition will change over time, inviting audiences to both experience the evolution of the space in person and encounter a new installation upon multiple visits. A Supple Perimeter, Artist Statement Rasheed's research-based practice, which spans installation, photography, performance, publications, and printmaking, engages with figurative and literal language to interrogate how we read, write, consume, and distribute histories of Black folks. Invested in the wide permutations of Blackness, A Supple Perimeter explores the capacities of blackness and the quiet, blackness and the reticent, blackness and the private: an expansive blackness that allows for a Black subject with interiority and a strategic engagement with public(s). In A Supple Perimeter, Rasheed begins with her research into ecology, entropy and black traditions of experimental writing to construct an immersive ecosystem of existing and self-authored texts, unfinished videos, projections, ob... If/Then & Questions - Lower Manhattan Cultural Council
Through September 24, 2017 - New York

In addition to a solo exhibition in the gallery at The Arts Center at Governors Island, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council hosts a public art installation by artist, educator, and writer Kameelah Janan Rasheed. Rasheed's If/Then (2014-present) and Questions (2017) will be installed on the façade of the historic Fort Jay Theater on Governors Island using the existing poster cases and original marquee board. Taking advantage of a space that would have typically advertised live entertainment and movies from 1939-1996 to U.S. military and their families living and working on Governors Island, Rasheed's new project Questions and the ongoing If/Then both aim to create a different kind of moment of pause for a viewer: to consider an existential question or to process the association of poignant, two-word alliterative phrases, all composed by the artist. On a biweekly cycle, the posters in the cases and the text in the marquee board will be changed by Rasheed. The marquee board will feature a new question concerning a contemporary context. The posters will feature alliterative word pairings, each of which contain a multiplicity of meanings. Each change will be documented via Instagram... (read more)

Mad. Sq. Art: Josiah Mcelheny - Madison Square Park
Through October 08, 2017 - New York

Madison Square Park Conservancy is proud to announce its thirty-fourth exhibition, Prismatic Park by artist and MacArthur Foundation Fellow recipient Josiah McElheny. The project features three large sculptures of painted wood and prismatic glass on view in Madison Square Park from June 13, 2017 through October 8, 2017. The outdoor exhibition will comprise three exquisite sculptures in painted wood and prismatic glass: minimal, almost architectural forms that will create new spaces within the Park for the creation of music, dance, and poetry: a curvilinear, translucent blue sound wall for experimental music; a circular, reflective green floor for vanguard dance; and a vaulted-roofed luminous red and yellow pavilion for poetry. Each will refract the surrounding natural light, beckoning the passerby and regular Park visitor. The three structures will form open, stage-like platforms—in both the physical and metaphorical sense—for the collaborating choreographers, dancers, musicians, and poets who will be working next to them, on them, and under them in the summer of 2017. Throughout the exhibition, three nonprofit art organizations based in New York—Blank Forms, Danspace Project, an... (read more)
