Birdtalker - Rough Trade NYC
September 10, 2017 - Brooklyn

Zack and Dani were married in 2012 and soon after their wedding tried writing a couple songs together. They liked it, so they wrote a couple more. Andy, a friend from college and very talented drummer, was into the songs and started beating on stuff while Zack and Dani played them. It sounded good. While these 3 were playing the songs at Shakespeare in the Park one August afternoon, Brian became interested in adding his immense talent to the mix as well and began playing along with mandolin and guitar. It sounded even better. Birdtalker as these 4 members wrote and practiced for about a year when yet another talented friend and Birdtalker's biggest fan, Jesse, expressed interest in lending his bass sounds to the band. It is the combination of each member's specific offerings that gives Birdtalker the life and sound that it now possesses. And it doesn't hurt that they all like each other a heck of a lot, too. Zack and Dani write songs as a way to share ideas they care about and sentiments they feel deeply. Playing music has proven to be a powerful avenue for connection and communion, within the band as well as with listeners. Birdtalker's hope is simply that the more music they w... (read more)

Is Poetry Theater? 5-Week Workshop W/ Reg E Gaines - Bowery Poetry Club
September 10, 2017 - New York

Is Poetry Theater? 5-week writing/performance workshop w/ reg e gaines This workshop will meet the following Sundays: September 10, September 17, September 24, October 1, October 8 TIME/LOCATION: 12 PM – 2 PM at Bowery Poetry located at 308 Bowery INSTRUCTOR: reg e gaines It's no accident the workshops are rooted in the familiarity of other writers' work. Sessions arent about memorization techniques but love and respect for printed text. Focus is placed on emotion as key in lifting words from the page. Well-written text shows, through imagery, what one feels. Once this decision is reached, there become options in dramatic interpretations. This is the basis of a series of sessions which will aid artists in analyzing text, creating new work, revisiting unpolished pieces, and sharpening performance skills. Over a five-week period, participants learn the similarities between poetry, hip-hop inflected spoken word pieces, soliloquies, monologues and poetry/theater. Suggested texts used in preparation for the workshops include poetry/theater by Miguel Pinero, Patricia Smith, Paul Beatty, Suheir Hammad, Lemon Anderson, Dierdre Moses, Danny Hoch, and selections from the anthology A... Orphaned Land & Pain - Gramercy Theater
September 11, 2017 - Grammercy Park

Israel's breakthrough band Orphaned Land – the pioneers of Oriental metal – have returned with All Is One and an in-your-face message for everyone to embrace: "People should be judged by their hearts and inner sincerity, not their religious beliefs." Three years have passed since the release of The Never Ending Way Of ORWarriOR (Produced by Steven Wilson – Porcupine Tree) and in that time Orphaned Land have toured the world, brought their message to the people, and almost 20 years into their career, continue to cement their reputation as band with a purpose. Something beyond melodic death metal, black metal and folk metal, Orphaned Land doesn't base their music on myths that other bands sing about; they focus on situations in the real world that are happening right here, right now. You'd be hard pressed to find any other musicians in Israel that have influenced so many people in outside the country's borders, and in the eye of opposing religious views Orphaned Land are, in many ways, considered enemies. There's no escaping the fact, however, that the band's music has broken down those barriers and unified a community. It wasn't a new age band or a jazz band that brought peopl... (read more)

Henry Jamison + Gracie and Rachel - Mercury Lounge
September 12, 2017 - New York

Assuming that a pedigree in such things has any relevance at all, which is certainly unclear, Henry Jamison was perhaps predisposed to songwriting. His great-great-great-great-great-great-great (etc.) grandfather was the 14th century poet John Gower (friend to Chaucer and Richard II) and his great-great-great-great grandfather was George Frederick Root, the most popular songwriter of the Civil War era. Probably more relevant is that his mother is an English professor and his father a classical composer, who gave him a Korg 8-track recorder and his first guitar. Henry attended a Waldorf School near his hometown of Burlington, VT, sang in a traveling folk choir and played viola in local youth orchestras. After an academically turbulent stint as an English major at Bowdoin College in Maine, he left on tour for two years with a band of bearded friends. This period was full of joys and sorrows and ended in a move back home. After a few attempts at recording a solo debut with a cadre of talented players, Henry decided to demo some new ideas on his old Korg 8-track, which would go on to become The Rains EP. These songs show a central interest in exploring inner worlds, observing their ... (read more)

Inquisition - Gramercy Theater
September 13, 2017 - Grammercy Park

INQUISITION cemented their reputation as rising underground stars with their fifth full-length 'Ominous Doctrines of the Perpetual Mystical Macrocosm' (2011). Despite the long wait for a new album after 'Nefarious Dismal Orations' was released in 2007, the black metal duo continued straight on the course already charted by 'Magnificent Glorification of Lucifer' (2004). The Americans basically stayed true to their ritualistic approach and croaking vocal style that created the buzz around the duo's earlier black attacks 'Into the Infernal Regions of the Ancient Cult' (1998) and 'Invoking the Majestic Throne of Satan' (2002). Yet the devil lurks in details, and INQUISITION achieved to climb up the ladder of success by little but effective tweaks an innovations. On 'Ominous Doctrines of the Perpetual Mystical Macrocosm', Dagon sounded more vitriolic than ever, the guitars move to the front and added scope, while the production remains brutal and dirty but overall improved and dead on target. The band had been founded by Dagon, while living in the South American state of Colombia in 1989. After the release of three demos, the guitarist and vocalist moved back to the United States in 199... (read more)

The exhibit content provides the opportunity to explore the myriad of motivations impacting the average person living in Nazi Germany or occupied territories, from apathy and indifference to anti-Semitism, instrumental or hostile motivations, fear and intimidation, etc. In this workshop, Dr. Susan Bachrach, Curator of Special Exhibitions at the USHMM offers a rich and informative perspective for participants that outlines the main themes of the exhibit and sets the foundat... For the first time in the US, Blixen's life story will captivate audiences anew in The Baroness - Isak Dinesen's Final Affair, a play by renowned Danish playwright Thor Bjorn Krebs brought to the stage by the Scandinavian American Theater Company. Ggoolldd - Mercury Lounge
September 15, 2017 - New York

The day after GGOOLLDD frontwoman Margaret Butler graduated from art school in Baton Rouge she packed a Uhaul and headed west. "I was like, yeah, I'm not going to live here anymore," she recalls, laughing. Her first stop was Portland, Oregon, where she subsisted mostly on "ramen noodles and pumpkins people stole for me from Home Depot," she remembers. "You sauté them down and add lots of black pepper and curry powder and soy sauce. It's actually pretty good!" Butler was riding high on that particular sense of freedom that comes when you've decided your life plan is to just say yes to pretty much everything. So you don't really care that you're broke and subsisting on stolen jack-o-lanterns, because you're not in your suburban high school anymore, hiding your disdain for the cheerleaders. You're in a weird and cool new town, hanging out with musicians and designers and artists. You're free to mess around. Explore. And just when you're starting to get a little over living "four people deep," as Butler puts it, in your tiny apartment, another friend says, hey, come out to Wisconsin for a while. So you do. (Because: say yes!) And a while later, when, boozy in a bar one night, you h... (read more)

She faces the grim truths about maternity that nobody wants to talk about with joyous aplomb and plenty of laughs along the way." AFAR Local: "...there's no excuse to miss this raw and hysterical portrayal of parenthood that's just as appropriate for those who have kids at home as for those who intend never to procreate." The Broadway Blog: "Motherhood is no f-ing joke. And comic Jamie Aderski will be the first to agree with me on that … At its best, though, Aderski's piece is personal and honest, which does strike a humorous chord, as so many of the hardest things in life can be if you just take a step back and see the funny through the pain." Arts of Korea - Brooklyn Museum
September 15, 2017 - Brooklyn

Our pioneering collection of Korean art is one of the largest and most important Korean collections in the United States. A selection returns to view in a new gallery three times the size of the previous space and featuring many treasures never before shown. At the center of this state-of-the-art installation are the luminescent celadon ceramics of the Goryeo dynasty. These include a famed ewer in the shape of a lotus bud widely acknowledged to be the finest Korean ceramic in the Western hemisphere. But the riches of the Brooklyn collection—from golden earrings of the Silla kingdom to vibrant costumes, paintings, and furnishings of the Joseon dynasty—show that the sophistication of Korean art stretches far beyond these celebrated green wares. EXHIBITION: HOME + DISCORDANCE = US - Glucksman Ireland House NYU
September 15, 2017 - New York

Solas Nua, in collaboration with the NYU Brademas Center and NYU Washington, DC is pleased to present Home + Discordance = US, an exhibition that explores the idea of the US as a place of "home". Typically the word home conjures up an image of warmth, welcome and a place of safety. However, for some that image does not fully hold true; some are less welcome than others, some are less equal and some are less safe. The exploration of the Irish immigrant experience of defending home, leaving home and making new homes is one frequently addressed in Solas Nua's programming. This experience is not singular to the Irish but is universal and one that is shared by all communities in the US be they immigrant or indigenous. This exhibition and series has been made possible by the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities, Glucksman Ireland House of New York University, and the Embassy of Ireland.

He will be joined by New Jersey fiddler Willie Kelly, a master of the old-time musical style of the East Galway/East Clare region.

Jordan Rakei - Mercury Lounge
September 16, 2017 - New York

Jordan Rakei signs to Ninja Tune and unveils new single 'Sorceress'. At only 25, the New Zealand born multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and producer is a rare talent whose distinct take on soul captures a sonic and emotional awareness many artists spend their entire careers chasing. 'Sorceress', the first single taken from his forthcoming album, sees Jordan edging beyond the peripheries of the genial, often sun-flecked sound his fans have come to know him for. "It's about how the ego can fully control the way you act and perceive life," he says. Jordan's whirlwind rise has been a predominately solo effort. His exceptional musical ability (he writes, sings and plays most of the instrumentation on his records himself) is accompanied by an unrelenting - yet agreeably humble - ambition. His aptitude and knack for songwriting caught the attention of tastemakers following the release of his 2014 EP "Groove Curse". His self-released debut album "Cloak" (2016) lit the blue touch paper, earning him a coveted set at Pitchfork Avant-Garde Block Party 2016 and supports for the likes of Jamie Woon and NAO. Drawing early support from the Soulection crew, he has collaborated with Taku, Tom Misch... (read more)

Cirque Saturdays - Highline Ballroom

Penny & Sparrow - Highline Ballroom
September 16, 2017 - New York

There are things that we ought to be afraid of. Things that, rightfully, send cold sweat nightmares. For kids it can be anything from the darkness under a bed, or strangers, or crossing a busy street. For adults it might change face a bit and become things like sickness, job security, or heartbreak. And sometimes, when you point the flashlight right at the thing you're terrified of, you declaw it. You take its mask off and it returns to being an empty, boring closet with nothing inside to harm you. Or maybe the light shows an unexpected beauty in the place of what you thought was horrific. Other times, though, you aim the beam straight into the pitch black and the thing that you prayed wasn't real, the one with all the teeth, is right there smiling at you. Texas born duo Penny and Sparrow know these things, and in their 2017 release Wendigo they turn the lights off on purpose and hunt for what's really there in the dark. With a musical maturity that has been honed over half a decade and hundreds of live shows, Kyle Jahnke and Andy Baxter are presenting their most ambitious album yet. Rejoined by Chris Jacobie (producer and engineer of Creature, Tenboom, Struggle Pretty & Christm... (read more)

Never Built New York - Queens Museum
Through September 18, 2017 - Queens

famous public parks is the ghost of the city that could have been – a parallel metropolis that can reveal the city's goals, strengths and challenges. Never Built New York, co-curated by Sam Lubell and Greg Goldin, and designed by Christian Wassmann invites visitors to discover the New York City that might have been through original prints, drawings, models, installations, and animations. While it may be impossible to re-imagine New York, Never Built explores a city where you could catch a football game in Manhattan, travel via a floating airport, and live in an apartment also acting as a bridge support. Exploring the alternative paths New York City could have traveled encourages us to think beyond the present tense and push the boundaries of what the future of the metropolis holds. Co-Curator Sam Lubell is a Contributing Editor at The Architect's Newspaper. He has written seven books about architecture for Monacelli Press, Rizzoli, Metropolis Books, and Phaidon. He also writes for The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles Magazine, Architect, Architectural Record, Architectural Review, Wallpaper*, Contract, and other publications. Sable Elyse Smith - Queens Museum
Through September 18, 2017 - Queens

The self is contextual; contingent upon geography, system, relationship, memory, knowing… And violence can be quotidian, like the landscape of prison shaping itself around my body. The images are made so that I can see me. I am haunted by Trauma. We are woven into this kaleidoscopic memoir by our desires to consume pain, to blur fact and fiction, to escape —Sable Elyse Smith Sable Elyse Smith's project at the Queens Museum, Ordinary Violence, continues her ongoing exploration of the trauma and emotional violence affected on incarcerated individuals and their loved ones. Mining her own experiences of visiting her father in prisons for the past 19 years, Smith will present a combined media installation involving video, neon, photographic and textual works to visualize the ways in which an impersonal bureaucratic system of incarceration take effects on the bodies and minds of the extended network of people bound to it. A central focus of the exhibition is the ubiquity of the mural art form as a backdrop for the Polaroid photos taken in prison visitation rooms, as well as the micro-economy and unspoken negotiation embedded in the creation and circulation of these images—which... Julia Weist with Nestor Siré - Queens Museum
Through September 18, 2017 - Queens

Jerome Fellow Julia Weist collaborates with Cuban artist Nestor Siré to analyze creative social strategies in Cuba that have developed in place of internet connectivity. The most significant of these phenomenon, El Paquete Semanal or "the weekly package," is a 1 terabyte digital media collection, aggregated weekly and circulated across the country via in-person file sharing. Since 2015, Siré has been curating art into El Paquete through a project called !!!Seccio?n A R T E (!!!A R T Section), a series of folders updated monthly with original artist projects. The folder follows the rules of the Paquete: it can be no more than 5GB, and must contain no pornography and no political issues. In early 2016, Siré invited Weist to contribute an artwork, the beginning of an ambitious partnership. Over the subsequent year, the pair met with Paquete distributors or matrices in every province in Cuba. In these talks they gained an understanding of current trends and processes on a national and local level, including who and what was popular. West and Siré also came to know the depth and intricacy of the Paquete networks, including the extent of its economic impact; the Paquete also includes ... (read more)

Through November 19, 2017 - New York

How has the act of remembering—and forgetting—been transformed in the digital age? Photography's relationship with the concept of memory stretches its entire history and includes its every iteration. Only now has the distribution of photography exploded with newfound ubiquity, ushering in a paradigm shift that bears semblance to that of the Gutenberg press. Photography's various forms have converged onto a point of accessibility where what was once a luxury is now a presupposition. As the degrees of separation between people decrease, so do those between past, present, and future. To remember is to engage with all three, and to create is to make them tangible. The collective consciousness of humankind speaks a visual language, and photography is poised, now more than ever, to upend the very notion of what it means to create.
