Using the Greek myth of Europa, the play attacks the problem of gender equality and the status of women in today's society. The story begins when three actresses and an opera diva meet on an empty stage. They have come to say their last farewell to a great director whose ashes they have brought with them in an urn. They can't come to an accord about its nature, or even agree about what has been and what is to come. Two for the Road - Dixon Place
May 14, 2019 - New York

George Emilio Sanchez In this monthly work-in-progress showing, renowned performance artist and activist Sanchez will develop his upcoming production, XIV, which premieres at Dixon Place in June 2019. The show melds autobiography and history to convey the injustices racialized communities face as they fight for 'equal protection of the laws'. Revolving around a 1946 class action lawsuit by 5 Mexican-American families to have their children enrolled in Orange County, CA public schools by applying the 14th Amendment, XIV serves as a creative counterpoint to the current events surrounding the realities of undocumented 'dreamers' and the vitriolic calls for building a Wall. With humor and spoken word testimony as poetic-protest, Sanchez embodies a response to what we are seeing unfold before us as marginalized people struggle to survive within a broken landscape, pitting constitutional ideals against their experience being treated as unequal and inferior. This courageous new work exposes the country's long history of conflicting narratives that fall to one side of the color line.

Facebook Made Me Do It: Social Media and Democracy | The Alliance Series - Albertine
May 15, 2019 - New York

Social media platforms recently came under scrutiny after they failed to prevent the creation of fake accounts aimed at manipulating the 2016 U.S. presidential elections. The impact of social media on democracy and public debate is felt in many other ways: today’s algorithms, for instance, tend to encourage the spread of emotionally charged opinions, and create rabbit holes of converging viewpoints rather that exposing us to conflicting perspectives; the most extreme views or those that express moral outrage also tend to gain more traction than moderate and balanced opinions. At the same time, social media have provided new platforms for democratic debate, encouraging a broader range of individuals to engage in political dialogue, and have made a diversity of channels available to users on which they can express themselves. This conversation on social media and democracy between Joan Donovan, Director of the Technology and Social Change Research Project at the Harvard Kennedy School and Célia Zolynski and Judith Rochfeld, Law Professors from Paris I Sorbonne, is presented as part of the Alliance Series at Albertine. The conversation will be moderated by Kris-Stella Trump, direct... (read more)

Power of Sound Roundtable: Sound and Consciousness - Pioneer Works
May 15, 2019 - Brooklyn

One of the foundations of sound therapy is often described through the lens of the following formula: frequency + intent = healing. In other words, sound, joined with the intention of healing, has the power to create movement towards wholeness. In our final session of the series, featuring guest Gong Master Michael Jay, we'll explore this formula experientially, working with the gong and metal bowls as conductors of consciousness. We'll also touch on the work of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and José Argüelles, who advocate for an awakened planetary mind they call the noosphere—the time when the consciousness of the planet goes from the cosmic unconscious to the cosmic conscious. Through guided meditation combined with sound, we'll harness the transformative power of the group mind, radiating our intention outward to create waves of harmony on Earth.

Ignorance is No Excuse, Reno - Dixon Place

Become a Citizen Pruner - Green-Wood Cemetery
May 15, 2019 - Brooklyn

Stewardship and pruning hugely reduce a tree's vulnerability to common urban threats such as pedestrian and vehicular traffic, drought and storms. In New York City, where there is limited funding for tree maintenance but significant need, Citizen Pruners provides a great asset to our urban environment. Join fellow nature lovers and urbanists to become licensed to take care of NYC's street trees. Green-Wood's own neighborhood, Sunset Park, is one of the fastest growing and most diverse neighborhoods in all of New York City. Yet, it also faces serious environmental challenges. Car and truck exhaust from the Gowanus Expressway and industrial emissions from its small manufacturers create higher than average levels of harmful air pollution. Street trees to the rescue! They're nature's miracle workers: they intercept and absorb storm water runoff, provide oxygen, fight climate change, and lower air temperatures.

Cody Johnson - Irving Plaza
May 17, 2019 - New york

When Cody Johnson's Cowboy Like Me debuted in the Top 10 on the Billboard Country Albums chart in January 2014, jaws dropped in offices all over Nashville. "I got a lot of 'Who is this kid?'" Johnson says with a laugh two years later. "I love that. That was a new horizon. And I'm gonna work to make sure people know exactly who I am." Johnson does that from the start in Gotta Be Me, a follow-up project that's loaded with solid country instrumentation and winsome melodies. In the first minute alone, he paints himself as a cowboy, raised on outlaw country, who drinks too much, fights too much and won't apologize for having an opinion. By the time the 14-track journey is over, he's shared his rodeo history in "The Only One I Know (Cowboy Life)," demonstrated his woman's influence in "With You I Am" and paid homage to his gospel heritage in "I Can't Even Walk."

They immediately clicked and fans flooded social media telling Dave to never change the co-host. And he didn't. Sticking to the formula of Dave reading Gareth a story he has never heard, The Dollop quickly shot up the charts. Le sang noir des hommes - Albertine
May 18, 2019 - New York

Ten years after he went missing during a military operation south of the Sahara, a French soldier comes home. He is seeking vengeance, but he is also carrying the burden of terrible crimes committed by his grandfather in West Africa, during colonial times. From the burning desert to the high mountains of the Alps, a shadow walks with the soldier. Young and old, black and white, the ghost teaches him how to cross the borders of time, space, and race, while fueling his anger against his brother and his father. Bad blood runs in the family, between France and Africa. Only the soldier’s daughter, along with the great stag of the mountain, knows how to wash the original sin away. “As dark, strange, and disorienting as a David Lynch movie.” ––Grégoire Leménager, L’Obs In French.
