Ganja White Night - PlayStation Theater
February 16, 2018 - New York

Ganja White Night is an electronic music band whose early influences are found at the roots of "Bass-Music". During the past decade, the duo traveled many countries in Europe and beyond. The band takes a new creative direction tinted with hip-hop and more generally hybrid electronic music after the release of their fourth album "Addiction" in 2014. They decided to break the fetters that connected them almost exclusively to "Dubstep" and started using other forms of expression. It is therefore with their new album "Hybrid Distillery" that the group now has to make an impression by imposing its style in other genres of electronic music. This fifth album is not only another acoustic chapter, it is also about graphics. The draftsman/graffiti artist/director "Ebola - Delit2fuite" brings a whole new visual world mixed with, just like Ganja White Night, artistic originality and singularity never achieved until now.

X Ambassadors: Now, Now - Brooklyn Steel
February 16, 2018 - Brooklyn

KIDinaKORNER/Interscope band X Ambassadors' debut album VHS reflected on the events that shaped lead vocalist and lyricist Sam Harris and his older brother, keyboardist Casey Harris' life growing up in Ithaca, NY. The gold-certified album, which Rolling Stone called "bombastic rock that's as stomping as it is diaristic, leavened by big-tent pop hooks and a hint of hip-hop swagger," debuted at No. 7 on Billboard's Top 200 chart and spawned the platinum-selling "Renegades," which spent 12 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Alternative chart, and the double-platinum "Unsteady." The success of VHS sent X Ambassadors on a nearly two-year touring odyssey that found them winning over fans around the world and performing at the Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Life is Beautiful, and Shaky Knees festivals, among others, and establishing themselves as a world-class rock band. X Ambassadors recently released the impassioned "Ahead of Myself," the first single off their forthcoming sophomore set. X Ambassadors returned to Ithaca this fall to co-headline their inaugural Cayuga Sound Festival with The Roots, giving back to the community that nurtured their talent.

Darlene Love - Landmark on Main Street
February 16, 2018 - Port Washington

"Darlene Love's thunderbolt voice is as embedded in the history of rock and roll as Eric Clapton's guitar or Bob Dylan's lyrics." ~ The New York Times Through the years, Darlene Love continues to captivate audiences worldwide with her warm, gracious stage presence and superb performances. She returns to Landmark's Jeanne Rimsky Theater for an unprecedented seventh consecutive appearance, this time bringing the Love with her Valentine Tour. Since the early sixties, as part of Phil Spector's wall of sound hit factory, this great lady has done it all...from major motion pictures like the highly successful Lethal Weapon series to Broadway hits like Hairspray and Grease. She even starred as herself in Leader Of The Pack, credited as Broadway's first 'jukebox musical.' In the early years, Darlene's background vocals as lead singer for The Blossoms behind The Righteous Brothers, Dionne Warwick, Marvin Gaye, Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley (to name but a few) set the stage for her emergence as a star in her own right. Her Billboard hits include: He's A Rebel, The Boy I'm Gonna Marry, Wait 'Til My Bobby Gets Home, He's Sure the Boy I Love and the #1 holiday classic Christmas Ba... (read more)

Carla Bruni - The Town Hall
February 16, 2018 - New York

Carla Bruni hasn't just been making music throughout her colorful and singular life; she's also been a fan. The singer-songwriter, since her youth, assembled a trove (in her mind and on vinyl) of all-time sentimental favorites—pop songs forever associated with a person or place or moment in time, the sort of records that she says, borrowing the French term for love at first sight, "have been a coup de foudre." Could a first encounter with Carla Bruni—the woman, the myth, the music—lead to anything less? Coup de foudre more or less describes what happened when Bruni met legendary producer, composer, and musician David Foster after an L.A. performance in 2014. The two instantly hit it off, and Foster volunteered to produce Bruni's next record on the spot. "But my music is so French," Bruni recalls with a laugh. "So he said to me, 'what about some English songs?' But I can't write in English; I'd love to, but it doesn't come." The solution, arrived upon after a series of trans-Atlantic demo swaps and shaped during twin recording sessions in Paris and L.A., was for Bruni to reinterpret her all-time favorite pop songs—the songs, in other words, that the world's most seductive w... The Atlas Moth Royal Thunder Mirrors For Psychic Warfare - Saint Vitus
February 16, 2018 - Brooklyn

The Atlas Moth have carefully perfected their signature blend of bone-shaking heaviness and overwhelming urgency, adding in startling moments of clarity that allow the melodies to shine through the mire. Their swamp-worthy sludge epics are heavier than sin, a call for cleansing and nothing short of brutally honest. It's 2017 and after making perhaps the toughest album of their career, Royal Thunder are coming out swinging. The Atlanta based four-piece (Mlny Parsonz –bass/vocals, Josh Weaver –guitar, Evan Diprima –drums, Will Fiore –guitar), once memorably described as playing, 'a revved-up Southern hard rock that howls like Led Zeppelin astride a psychedelic unicorn', are, with WICK, reaching their tipping point. Following 2007's self-titled EP (reissued four years later by Relapse Records), 2012's CVI and 2015's critically acclaimed Crooked Doors, Royal Thunder's fourth release is an accumulation of shared experience, musical and otherwise, making art out of adversity and imbued with a new melodic succinctness that's borne out of a band who've spent the last few years growing up together. Mirrors For Psychic Warfare is an experimental noise project formed by Scott Kelly and ... (read more)

They began performing together at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind in the Jim Crow South during the Great Depression and now they are five-time Grammy-winning and 2018 Grammy-nominated "gospel titans" (Rolling Stone). In the course of their 70-plus years as an ensemble, the Blind Boys of Alabama have influenced the development of rock and soul music, sung alongside Martin Luther King Jr., collaborated with a who's who of popular music, and performed at the White House for three presidents. With the release of 2017's stunning gospel homecoming Almost Home, the two remaining original members—Clarence Fountain and Jimmy Carter—looked back at their lives and told an essential American story of tribulation, jubilation, and resilience. For one exceptional night in The Appel Room, Carter and the current lineup of singers are joined by their tight band for one of the Blind Boys' signature roof-raisers.

Four Simultaneous Soloists: A series of performances organized by David Grubbs - Pioneer Works
February 16, 2018 - Brooklyn

In much the same way that Anthony McCall's solid light works when exhibited together are experienced individually and as a group, this series of musical performances scheduled to take place within the exhibition imagines four performers—four soloists—experienced individually or as an ensemble. For each performance, four musicians are dispersed equidistantly throughout Pioneer Works' 130-foot main hall, each situated adjacent to a solid light piece. The musicians play at a modest volume—either acoustically or with self-contained amplification—such that visitors are compelled to explore the space in order to realize different musical combinations through a succession of aural vantage points. There is no single location from which to garner an all-over sound perspective; visitors must actively bring smaller sounds into focus by approaching them within Pioneer Works' main hall. Each of the four musicians on a given performance can be understood alternately as a soloist paired with a solid light work or as part of an ensemble. The selection of musicians, all of whom have extensive experience as improvisers, is motivated by the idea of the first-time encounter—none of the collectio... (read more)

Two Feet, Absofacto - Music Hall of Williamsburg
February 16, 2018 - Brooklyn

At 3am in the morning and 3 or so beers deep, New York based artist Two Feet sat restlessly on his friend's couch, The same couch that had also been serving as his bed for the last few months, in an apartment in Harlem. He was putting the final touches on a song he had written earlier that day -- unapologetically titled "Go Fuck Yourself," the track was written in a three hour blur and he hadn't given too much thought too until he had sent it to a handful of friends who said differently. Switching the track to public on soundcloud, Two Feet closed his laptop and let the liquor take him to sleep. By the time he woke up in the morning, "Go Fuck Yourself" had garnered thousands of streams and his inbox was ringing with messages from new fans and prospective labels. 5 months on and Two Feet aka Bill something is reflecting on his debut EP -- the appropriately titled, "First Steps." Independently released, the EP is a collection of 4 songs born out of frustration and a knee-jerk reaction to other projects he had been working. "I kind of just put it up because I was fed up with the other music I was making for other people" Bill says. "I was really not expecting anything to come f... (read more)

Juice, Joe Hertler & The Rainbow Seekers, Ian Kieffer - Knitting Factory
February 17, 2018 - Brooklyn

Joe Hertler & The Rainbow Seekers will make a sprightly young groove doctor out of anyone. With spectacular energy pulsating from every member of the band, the Rainbow Seekers could illuminate the very chambers of Heaven. Lead singer Joe Hertler splashes through lyrical puddles of golden rain, leaving his audience wearing flowery crowns and bubbling smiles. A ride on the Rainbow will take you across the mountains of Motown, through the fjords of folk, over the archipelagos of Americana, and—at last—into a funky firth, where only the fiercest of friendships can be found. The Rainbow Seekers began their quest beneath the fingertips of songwriter Joe Hertler. Bassist and producer Kevin Pritchard, recently thawed from an extremely rare prehistoric groove glacier, discovered the forlorn Hertler in a twinkling, mysteriously fortuitous place called The Quilted Attic. Alongside legendary glacier-hunter Rick Hale—who would later spend decades forging a drum set from pure, white-hot, ancient stardust to mark the occasion—Pritchard changed the world: He wrangled Hertler into musical collaboration. And the lonely little songsmith, it turned out, was not quite as alone as he seemed: Wit... (read more)

Railroad Earth Winter Tour - The Capitol Theatre
February 17, 2018 - Port Chester

There's a great scene in The Last Waltz – the documentary about The Band's final concert – where director Martin Scorsese is discussing music with drummer/singer/mandolin player Levon Helm. Helm says, "If it mixes with rhythm, and if it dances, then you've got a great combination of all those different kinds of music: country, bluegrass, blues music, show music…" To which Scorsese, the inquisitive interviewer, asks, "What's it called, then?" "Rock & roll!" Clearly looking for a more specific answer, but realizing that he isn't going to get one, Marty laughs. "Rock & roll…" Well, that's the way it is sometimes: musicians play music, and don't necessarily worry about where it gets filed. It's the writers, record labels, managers, etc., who tend to fret about what "kind" of music it is. And like The Band, the members of Railroad Earth aren't losing sleep about what "kind" of music they play – they just play it. When they started out in 2001, they were a bunch of guys interested in playing acoustic instruments together. As Railroad Earth violin/vocalist Tim Carbone recalls, "All of us had been playing in various projects for years, and many of us had played together in dif... (read more)

DZA -- as in "Dream Zone Achieved" -- signed a deal in 2002 and joined Big K.R.I.T. behind the scenes at Cinematic Music Group, but when twin daughters were brought into his life in 2007, he adopted a "now or never" attitude when it came to his solo career. A slew of mixtapes with weed lingo names like Sweet Baby Kushed God and Substance Abuse followed, then in 2011, DZA's mixtape Rolling Stoned won High Times Magazine's Doobie Award for 2011's hip-hop album of the year. A year later, the magazine signed the rapper to its High Times label and released Rugby Thompson, an album produced in total by Harry Fraud. On their debut album come out, you're hiding, singer/guitarist Zach Grace, bassist Dylan Bauld, guitarist McKinley Kitts, and drummer Kyle Hill alternately magnify and brighten those feelings by dreaming up an intensely cinematic take on synth-driven alt-pop. But for all its transportive melodies and triumphant mood, come out, you're hiding was born from a place of painful vulnerability. "Making this album has really been about me coming out my shell and getting over whatever block I have about letting people know what's going on in my head," says Grace, who serves as chief lyricist for the L.A.-based, Oregon-bred band. "A lot of people probably struggle with believing in themselves that way, and the album's a testament to overcoming that." Mostly recorded in Bauld's bedroom studio, with its title nodding to Grace's reclusive tendencies, come out, you're hiding achieves its intimate feel thanks partly to a process that flor adopted soon after moving to L.A. LTJ Bukem, MC Dynamic Duo: Armanni Reign & T.R.A.C, Smooth Prelude: Flaco - Brooklyn Bowl
February 17, 2018 - Brooklyn

Just who is LTJ Bukem? Ground breaking DJ? Inspirational musician? Record label entrepreneur? Club visionary, perhaps? When the man behind those wire rimmed glasses and that disarming smile writes his job description just what does he put? The man who took the drum and bass concept from a small venue off London's Charing Cross Road to the nation's superclubs and then onto the international stage? The geezer whose records launched breakbeat into a brand new galaxy of sound? Or maybe he just writes 'Renaissance man for a digital age'. In truth LTJ Bukem is all of the above. Although he wouldn't like to admit it, LTJ Bukem is the living embodiment of the post-acid house entrepreneurial creative spirit. He is a mild mannered energy flash whose panoramic musical vision has found success in every area he has explored. From running sound systems to cutting up breaks at raves, from relocating the heart of breakbeat culture to redefining the spirit of drum and bass, the man known to his friends as Danny Williamson has sat at the forefront of breakbeat evolution, lighting the way with little more than a zest for life and a love of music. In other words, LTJ Bukem is a man on a mission!

Poi Dog Pondering w/ Abra Moore - City Winery
February 17, 2018 - New York

30 years on, upwards of 15 band members deep & an Ocean in-between; Poi Dog Pondering continue to thrive & evolve on their 8th full length album entitled "Everybody's Got A Star". Their unique signature 'Acous-tronic' blend of orchestral, rock and dance music influences, shine through with PDP's ever present irreverence to stylistic conformity. "Everybody's Got A Star" is an unapologetic off-road venture, a Joy Ride recalling the vibe of 80's/90's Night Club DJs ...the ones adventurous enough to careen from one genre to the next, with a slight membrane of madness to the method. "Growing up in Honolulu, we really only had one good Live Music/Disco/ Club; The Wave. It was Punk Rock/New Wave kids from 9 to 2am, then a Gay Disco from 2am to 4am. Everybody mixing it up & having fun. You could hear everything from Iggy Pop's "Lust for life", to Loose Joints "Is it all over my face". I'm super thankful for that eclecticism. Music for dancing is like an elliptical orbit, it's always been around me, sometimes it swings in real close and sweeps me along full force for a while.

Tainted Love - 80's Dance Party with Dj Jane Elizabeth - February Edition! - The Bell House
February 17, 2018 - Brooklyn

Soft Cell's pioneering 1981 cover of the Northern Soul classic, "Tainted Love," is the inspiration for this awesome 80s dance party. Building on a solid foundation of New Wave, we'll dig deeper into the catalog of massive hits and overlooked misses from the late 70s through the early 90s - pivotal years in musical history that blurred the lines between Analog and Digital, Disco and Synthpop, Funk and Hip-Hop. A time when Alternative was called Post-Punk, Indie actually meant independent, and Throbbing Gristle's "Hot on the Heels of Love" surely could have been alongside Blondie's "Heart of Glass" on the charts...with today's perspective. Other passions include CBGB-era New York, Batcave-era London - Punk Rock, Glam Rock, Kraut Rock, Girl Rock, Dad Rock, Rockabilly, Ska, Machine Soul, Blue-Eyed Soul, Darkwave, Coldwave - plus some guilty pleasures in the (strictly) Old-School Rap department.

Teddy Thompson & Jenni Muldaur - City Winery
February 18, 2018 - New York

On previous discs, singer-songwriter Teddy Thompson always relied on one of the songs he's written to provide him with an album title and a central concept to build the rest of his work around. This time it's different: you won't find a tune named "Bella" on his fourth Verve Forecast effort yet the idea of "bella" — Italian shorthand for "beautiful" — is everywhere. Says Thompson, "I like the word, the meaning of it. It spoke to the lushness and beauty I was going for." Recorded in New York City and produced by David Kahne (Regina Spektor, Paul McCartney, the Strokes), Bella combines lean rock and roll with lush string arrangements on material that is both disarmingly catchy and often startlingly frank. Since 2008's A Piece Of What You Need, which London's The Guardian called "one of the year's best," this has become something of a Thompson trademark, teasing the listener with immediately addictive melodies then pulling the rug out from under them with unsparingly confessional or darkly amusing lyrics.

Bunny Michael - Rough Trade NYC
February 18, 2018 - Brooklyn

Born in Texas, Bunny Michael moved to New York City just in time for 9/11. Beginning with a collegiate study in acting and performance, music became the most obvious vehicle for the young artist's need for expression. They created the rap project Bunny Rabbit, a louder and more beat based response to the DIY anti-folk movement of the early 00s. Dancing the line between profundity and raucous humor, their lyrics began to point toward a new agenda: universal healing, self love, and psychedelic wisdom. These principles began to consolidate into clear messaging, bleeding out into works of visual art, hand painted clothing, and meditative practices. Since the discontinuation of Bunny Rabbit in 2010, and a short lived collaborative project by the name of Twin Gemz, Michael has been working and performing solo. The debut record Rainbow Licker 2014, and the recently completed yet to be released follow up, Afterlyfe show a maturation of Michael's artistic practice and new depths of inspiration and skill. In the past year Bunny has taken to new realms to deliver their gifts with a widely celebrated "meme project" on Instagram, wherein Bunny converses with their "Higher Self" and we are given...
