Bleachers - Terminal 5
November 20, 2017 - New York

After building a devoted fan-base through a year and a half of non-stop touring behind his band Bleachers' well-received debut album Strange Desire, Jack Antonoff was spending time in studios in Los Angeles and Atlanta spit-balling ideas for a second album when he had a powerful realization. It struck him, as he was sitting in hip-hop producers Organized Noize's studio in Atlanta, that the records that meant so much to him growing up— are rooted in a specific place. "They came from somewhere!" he says excitedly. "There's an energy there and the artist is telling a story of how they were raised. It's a sound from a city, and they're planting a flag in that city and saying, 'This is what it's like to live here.'" The New Jersey-born, New York-based Antonoff knew he needed to go home to the East Coast and build a studio. "It's like you have to go sit in your bedroom and hear the music on the speakers you heard Graceland on the first time," he says. "You gotta listen through the speakers you heard Smashing Pumpkins on the radio the first time. I had to get back to that space. So I did. I grabbed all this shit from my childhood bedroom in New Jersey and built a studio in my apartmen... (read more)

Kamasi Washington - Terminal 5
November 22, 2017 - New York

When Kamasi Washington released his tour de force LP, The Epic, in 2015, it instantly set him on a path as a torchbearer for progressive, improvisational music that would open the door for new audiences to experience music unlike anything they had heard before. The 172-minute odyssey featuring his 10-piece band, The Next Step, was littered with elements of hip-hop, classical and R&B music, all major influences on the young saxophonist and bandleader, who exceeds any notions of what "jazz" music is. Released to critical acclaim, The Epic won numerous "best of" awards, including the American Music Prize and the Gilles Peterson Worldwide album of the year. Washington followed that work with collaborations with other influential artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Run the Jewels, Ibeyi, and John Legend, and the creation of "Harmony of Difference," a standalone multimedia installation during the 2017 Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. The fulfillment of Washington's destiny begin when at age 13, Washington picked up his musician father's horn and proceeded to play the Wayne Shorter composition "Sleeping Dancer Sleep On" despite never touching a saxophone... The Front Bottoms - Terminal 5
November 25, 2017 - New York

Whether they're just strutting their stuff or referencing a sexual position, the Front Bottoms have delivered a powerful new album with Back On Top. Their first for Fueled By Ramen is both full of departures and a continuation of the work they've been building on for years. Brian Sella (vocals, guitar) and Mat Uychich (drums) have put together a vibrant array of killer new songs with their band mates Tom "Two Slaps" Warren (bass) and Ciaran "C-Dog" O'Donnell (guitar, horns, keyboards). The growth and confidence shows in the work of this unit of four. While there is plenty that is familiar from Mat's powerhouse drumming to Brian's acoustic guitar and a healthy dose of horns, there is also plenty that is new, including bigger rock sounds ("Motorcycle," "West Virginia," "The Plan (Fuck Jobs)") and surprisingly melodic vocal parts. ("Cough It Out," "HELP"). There's even a guest turn from Jersey rapper GDP who takes their darker side to even darker places in the "Historic Cemetery." Songs flow seamlessly into each other and the album just gets stronger as it moves along. Under the production ears of Joe Chiccarelli (Beck, The Strokes, Morrissey, White Stripes) the mixes are especiall... (read more)
