The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra - Birdland

Grammy Award winning pianist, composer and educator Arturo O'Farrill -- leader of the "first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz" (NY Times) -- was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late, great composer Chico O'Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He played piano in Carla Bley's Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte. The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra is the resident large format ensemble of the nonprofit Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) founded by Arturo O'Farrill in 2007 and dedicated to preserving the music and heritage of big band Latin jazz, supporting its performance for new audiences, and educating young people in the understanding and performance of this important cultural treasure. Billy Hart Quartet - Jazz Standard

More than 50 years into a storied professional career, "the eminent drummer Billy Hart brings his vast experience of working with everyone from Wes Montgomery to Miles Davis to his own tight–knit bands." (The New Yorker) Hart's voluminous credits include stints with Herbie Hancock (1969–73), McCoy Tyner (1973–74), and Stan Getz (1974–77); as a leader, he's released 11 albums beginning in 1977 with Enchance (A&M/Horizon). His latest CD, The Broader Picture (enja/Yellowbird, 2016), offers eight new Billy Hart originals, arranged and conducted by Christophe Schweizer, and superbly performed by the WDR Big Band. Hart brings in his tried and true quartet, made up of three of the most in demand musicians in jazz: Mark Turner, Ethan Iverson, and Ben Street. This Valentine's Day, Jazz Standard is the place to be when vocalist Kate McGarry brings to life her new album, The Subject Tonight Is Love, coming 2/2 from Binxtown Records. Over the course of a dozen conceptually–linked songs, the collective group of McGarry, Keith Ganz, and Gary Versace investigate the concept of love in its many forms and from several different perspectives. The formidable talents of these GRAMMY-nominated musicians are in full bloom on this ambitious outing. In the 1960's Norman left Temple University in Philadelphia Pa. (where he was studying medicine) and ended up a student at Julliard as well as a in-demand New York City Jazz drummer with Miles Davis as his friend and mentor. After a string of hits with Budda Records he planted the seed for the the love sound track of a generation or two. With songs like "You Are My Star Ship", "Valentine Love", and "Betcha By Golly Wow" he sold millions of records and received a Grammy nomination. Once Clive Davis got wind of the Norman Connors experience he signed him for a 6 record deal making Norman the first African American on ARISTA's label. Jay Leonhart Quintet + Special Guests, Tribute to Marlene VerPlanck - Birdland

Longtime Marlene VerPlanck bassist and collaborator Jay Leonhart leads a tribute featuring many of her regular bandmates and special guests. As Leonhart says, "any time Marlene missed a gig, she insisted we play without her." In fact Marlene was scheduled to perform at Birdland on February 15th before her untimely passing on January 15th, 2018, at the age of 84. Newark native Marlene VerPlanck was a jazz and pop vocalist whose body of work centered on big band jazz, the American songbook, and cabaret. Her debut album was released in 1955 when she was 21, and featured jazz legends Hank Jones, Joe Wilder, Wendell Marshall, Kenny Clarke, and Herbie Mann. Later, she was the vocalist in big bands led by Charlie Spivak and Tommy Dorsey. VerPlanck was a prolific studio vocalist for jingles, which included singing an arrangement of the 1930s Campbell's Soup "M'm M'm Good" song.

Since 2004, Pete Zimmer released five (5) critically acclaimed albums as a leader on his own record label, Tippin' Records. Cast Party is a wildly popular happening that has brought Broadway glitz and urbane wit to the legendary Birdland in New York City every Monday night since 2003. It is the ultimate spot to mix and mingle with show folk and the people who love them. Cast Party is a hilariously impromptu variety show where showbiz superstars and up-and-comers deliver jaw-dropping musical performances and razzle-dazzle. Legendary showman Jim Caruso guides the entire affair with razor-sharp humor and the unbridled enthusiasm of an uber-fan. Musical Director Billy Stritch holds court at the ivories, along with Steve Doyle on bass, and Daniel Glass on drums...but the real fun starts when the audience participates in the onstage festivities.
