Alice was raised between Washington DC and Augusta, Georgia on a steady diet of gospel, pop, soul and a little go-go thrown in for good measure. The Coronas - Bowery Ballroom
February 11, 2018 - New York

With four double platinum albums, a slew of top ten singles, sold out arenas and a legion of devoted fans behind them The Coronas have earned their title as one of Ireland's best loved and hardest working bands. This year, 2017, The Coronas will release their 5th studio album Trust The Wire revealing their most refined and confi- dent record to date and with this milestone Danny O'Reilly (vocals, guitar), Graham Knox (bass), Conor Egan (drums) and Dave McPhillips (guitar) have much to reflect upon. The Coronas burst into the Irish consciousness with their debut single Decision Time in 2007. It had been a decade since the guitar bands of the 90's ruled supreme and The Coronas injected the Irish airwaves with a refreshing dose of catchy ruckus once again. A new wave of millennial rockers were arriving (Arctic Monkeys, The Kooks) and The Coro- nas were leading the pack in Ireland. By the end of 2007 The Coronas had released their debut album Heroes or Ghosts to huge acclaim and had 3 hit singles in the charts; the last of which San Diego Song set Irish radio aflame and propelled The Coronas into the spotlight. But despite the height of 2007's trajectory The Coronas success w... (read more)

Kermit Ruffins & the Bbq Swingers - Mardi Gras Celebration - Blue Note
Through February 11, 2018 - New York

Whether listening to a track on his newest CD, engaging him in conversation or hearing his voice on an answering machine message, one word springs immediately to mind to describe Kermit Ruffins. Passion. The 44-year-old New Orleans native lives it, plays it and sings about it, and nowhere is it more evident than when he discusses his craft the swinging, good-time jazz that lured him in as a teenager and continues to whet his appetite even three decades and 10 solo recordings later. "You definitely pick that up from me. Thats definitely the way I live, man," he said. "From the time I wake up in the morning, I'm itching for my next show to happen. It can't get here fast enough for me. I think thats the basic ingredient of New Orleans music. Our traditional music. Its really just happy music. A lot of other jazz players are very technical and concentrating on studying hard. We study hard, too, but what we most want to do is just get up there and experiment with the tunes that weve been playing for years and years." Ruffins legacy-in-progress includes co-founding the Rebirth Brass Band in 1983. Rebirths creation was inspired by The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, which was cre... (read more)

An Evening Of Poetry With David Lehman And Angela Ball - Le Poisson Rouge
February 12, 2018 - West Village

Angela Ball Angela Ball is the author of six books of poetry. Michelle Shocked - City Winery
February 13, 2018 - New York

Michelle Shocked is a traveling troubadour whose musical talent is so eclectic it is difficult to categorize. As a young feminist, she left Texas to travel, Kerouac-style, and was caught up in Reagan-era grassroots politics. Her musical career was ignited by a bootleg recording made around a Kerrville Folk Festival campfire on a Sony Walkman. In a 26-year career that has seen critical acclaim at every juncture, she famously escaped major-label indentured servitude in 1996, subverting the artist-label relationship that helped lead to the current trend toward artistic self-containment. She has made good use of her independence, releasing more critically-acclaimed albums on her Mighty Sound label. Her 2009 album, Soul of My Soul, was the latest of these. Her current work-in-progress, the as-yet-unrecorded Indelible Women is schedule for a 2014 release. In 2010, she launched Roadworks, an ongoing, 5-year touring project which curates audience's favorite songs while developing Indelible Women. A Valentine's Evening w/ Robyn Hitchcock - City Winery
February 14, 2018 - New York

Robyn Hitchcock is one of England's most enduring contemporary singer/songwriters and live performers. A surrealist poet, talented guitarist, cult artist and musician's musician, Hitchcock is among alternative rock's father figures and is the closest thing the genre has to a Bob Dylan (not coincidentally his biggest musical inspiration). Since founding the art-rock band The Soft Boys in 1976, Robyn has recorded more than 20 albums as well as starred in 'Storefront Hitchcock' an in concert film recorded in New York and directed by Jonathan Demme. Blending folk and psychedelia with a wry British nihilism, Robyn describes his songs as 'paintings you can listen to'. His most recent album is self-titled and marks his 21st release as a solo artist. Out on April 21 2017, the album is produced by Brendan Benson (The Raconteurs). Hitchcock describes it as a "ecstatic work of negativity with nary a dreary groove." It has received rave reviews from UNCUT, Rolling Stone, Paste, Tidal and more. "A gifted melodist, Hitchcock nests engaging lyrics in some of the most bracing, rainbow-hued pop this side of Revolver. He wrests inspiration not from ordinary life but from extraordinary ... Eleanor Friedberger - City Winery
February 15, 2018 - New York

New View, the third solo album by Eleanor Friedberger, was rehearsed in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Echo Park and recorded in upstate New York. The former is a place where characters in Warren Zevon songs get clingy with their old lady while toughing out heroin withdrawal; the latter is where Bob Dylan got clingy with Robbie Robertson after flying off his motorcycle and revisiting the highway with his face. Fittingly, there's a fair amount of recovery in the songs of New View (though you won't find much in the way of smack or motorcycles). "Today I'm frozen but tomorrow I'll write about you," Friedberger sings, and much of the album seems set in that post-traumatic tomorrow, when stuff's calmed down, the figurative road rash has healed, the metaphorical junkie sweating up your mattress has finally packed his bags. Counting the albums she made with her brother Matthew as the Fiery Furnaces, this is Friedberger's twelfth full-length. I've been listening since the beginning, and to me New View seems like just that -- a vista that's opened up when I thought I'd seen everything Friedberger had to offer. (Then again, I believed her last album Personal Record was indeed her best to... (read more)

Alpaca Wolves Hartley's Encore

Flor, Handsome Ghost - Mercury Lounge
February 17, 2018 - New York

flor With their nuanced songwriting and inventive sensibilities, flor use their songs to explore feelings of longing and heartache, anxiety and self-doubt. On their debut album come out, you're hiding, singer/guitarist Zach Grace, bassist Dylan Bauld, guitarist McKinley Kitts, and drummer Kyle Hill alternately magnify and brighten those feelings by dreaming up an intensely cinematic take on synth-driven alt-pop. But for all its transportive melodies and triumphant mood, come out, you're hiding was born from a place of painful vulnerability. "Making this album has really been about me coming out my shell and getting over whatever block I have about letting people know what's going on in my head," says Grace, who serves as chief lyricist for the L.A.-based, Oregon-bred band. "A lot of people probably struggle with believing in themselves that way, and the album's a testament to overcoming that." Mostly recorded in Bauld's bedroom studio, with its title nodding to Grace's reclusive tendencies, come out, you're hiding achieves its intimate feel thanks partly to a process that flor adopted soon after moving to L.A. "I'd started experimenting with different production styles, an... (read more)

Poi Dog Pondering w/ Abra Moore - City Winery
February 17, 2018 - New York

30 years on, upwards of 15 band members deep & an Ocean in-between; Poi Dog Pondering continue to thrive & evolve on their 8th full length album entitled "Everybody's Got A Star". Their unique signature 'Acous-tronic' blend of orchestral, rock and dance music influences, shine through with PDP's ever present irreverence to stylistic conformity. "Everybody's Got A Star" is an unapologetic off-road venture, a Joy Ride recalling the vibe of 80's/90's Night Club DJs ...the ones adventurous enough to careen from one genre to the next, with a slight membrane of madness to the method. "Growing up in Honolulu, we really only had one good Live Music/Disco/ Club; The Wave. It was Punk Rock/New Wave kids from 9 to 2am, then a Gay Disco from 2am to 4am. Everybody mixing it up & having fun. You could hear everything from Iggy Pop's "Lust for life", to Loose Joints "Is it all over my face". I'm super thankful for that eclecticism. Music for dancing is like an elliptical orbit, it's always been around me, sometimes it swings in real close and sweeps me along full force for a while.

Teddy Thompson & Jenni Muldaur - City Winery
February 18, 2018 - New York

On previous discs, singer-songwriter Teddy Thompson always relied on one of the songs he's written to provide him with an album title and a central concept to build the rest of his work around. This time it's different: you won't find a tune named "Bella" on his fourth Verve Forecast effort yet the idea of "bella" — Italian shorthand for "beautiful" — is everywhere. Says Thompson, "I like the word, the meaning of it. It spoke to the lushness and beauty I was going for." Recorded in New York City and produced by David Kahne (Regina Spektor, Paul McCartney, the Strokes), Bella combines lean rock and roll with lush string arrangements on material that is both disarmingly catchy and often startlingly frank. Since 2008's A Piece Of What You Need, which London's The Guardian called "one of the year's best," this has become something of a Thompson trademark, teasing the listener with immediately addictive melodies then pulling the rug out from under them with unsparingly confessional or darkly amusing lyrics.

Aztec Two-Step Performs The Simon & Garfunkel Songbook: An Evening Of Songs & Stories - City Winery
February 18, 2018 - New York

When Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman, the critically acclaimed duo Aztec Two-Step, burst on the scene in 1972 with their Elektra Records debut, they were often reviewed as having the "intellectual lyricism" and "ethereal harmonies" of their legendary predecessors Simon & Garfunkel. Renowned for helping to usher the folk-rock music of the 1960s into the '70s and beyond, Aztec Two-Step continues to be one of acoustic music's most beloved and enduring acts. While the duo possesses a rich musical legacy of their own, here they masterfully interpret and perform the timeless songs and harmonies of Simon & Garfunkel. The compelling multimedia music event celebrates Simon & Garfunkel's iconic contribution to Pop Culture and beyond. The music speaks for itself. The storyline of the Songbook show was originally created by the late great pioneer of progressive FM radio and author, Pete Fornatale. Now mc'ing the show and featured on narration, along with creating The Songbook's slideshow, is Fornatale's protégé, WCWP DJ and Long Island Hall of Fame co-founder Tony Traguardo. Laughter and nostalgia abound, and a sing-a- long is always in the mix. "It was a great night of stories and songs...o... (read more)
