Tioga, Soccer Cousins - Mercury Lounge
February 10, 2019 - New York

Age Limit: 21 and Over TIOGA is a modern Alternative Indie Rock band hailing from Philadelphia. Growing into their current lineup in 2017, the quartet composed of Greg Adams (vocals & guitar), Derrick Dieso (guitar), Austin Paragas (bass & vocals), and Henri Tyler (drums & vocals) established a blend of new wave indie rock and "a danceable sound that lies somewhere between 80's goth-pop and modern indie/synth-pop," having been likened to "early 2000's new wave revival acts." Channeling influences from the likes of The 1975, The War On Drugs, and Bleachers, TIOGA exudes a young confidence that is demonstrated through their two EPs and first full-length, LODESTAR, and translates to their energetic live performances.

Guitar Masters Series: Dave Stryker Trio - Zinc Bar
February 11, 2019 - New York

I have followed Dave Stryker's playing since his early days in Omaha through his long stay with Stanley Turrentine and his longstanding relationship with the great alto player Steve Slagle (another undersung heavy out there) and he just gets better and better with one of the most joyous feels around." –Pat Metheny Acclaimed jazz guitarist Dave Stryker brings his formidable trio to the Zinc Jazz Club, with organist Dave Stryker and drummer McClenty Hunter. Whether you've heard guitarist Dave Stryker leading his own group (with 28 CD's as a leader to date), co-leading The Stryker/Slagle Band, or as a featured sideman with Stanley Turrentine, Jack McDuff, and many others, you know why the Village Voice calls him "one of the most distinctive guitarists to come along in recent years." Dave's new CD "Strykin' Ahead" features the same lineup as "Eight Track II"- Steve Nelson, Jared Gold and McClenty Hunter, and is getting great reviews. "Messin' with Mister T", is a celebration of the man he worked with for over a decade — Stanley Turrentine, "Mister T" — with ten of the greatest tenor sax players on the scene today. It went to #1 on JazzWeek Radio and stayed in the Top 50 for 20 weeks... (read more)

Thick, Bueno, Drug Bug - Mercury Lounge
February 12, 2019 - New York

Age Limit: 21 and Over Based in Brooklyn, the three piece (Nikki, Shari, Kate) pump out high-energy girlwave anthems. Drawing from the Riot Grrrls of 90s and your favorite Blink-182 pop punk jams, THICK's beer-soaked tunes are as infectious as their "I'm going to be myself—and you can't stop me" attitudes.

Welles - Mercury Lounge
February 12, 2019 - New York

Age Limit: 21 and Over Jesse Welles has no problem giving it to you straight. It's in his nature to pull no punches. Ask him about the current state of rock music and the rock singer and multi-talented musician will tell you how few things in life make him so equally prideful and angry as people bemoaning its death. He'll readily tell you that despite others constantly talking up his once-in-a-generation, jarringly emotive voice, to him it often sounds like nothing short of "burnt toast." "I hate to experience anything that isn't just the cold-hard truth," the Arkansas-native who performs as Welles, and has a knack for penning at turns tender, melodic and gut-punching rock music, says without hesitation. "But music definitely takes me away from it all," he offers with a nervous laugh. "Well, for three to four minutes anyway." Welles understands the best singers wield their instrument with a stealth utility; they're readily able to unleash a wealth of emotion from little more than a murmur, if, in his case, an occasional manic howl. Where vocal precision belies sterility, depth and character are blood let out from a deep wound. To that end, where Welles may not deem himself a story... (read more)

Krystle Warren & The Faculty - Mercury Lounge
February 13, 2019 - New York

Jake Sherman Age Limit: 21 and Over Jazz? Blues? Folk? Country?? It's difficult (and futile) to place Krystle Warren in a singular box within the ever-growing list of "genre". What's clear is that voice; a contralto that can growl and weep within the span of a song. Originally from Kansas City, now based in France, Krystle released her first album, Circles, in 2009 to critical acclaim. The set of twelve tunes fueled by the virtuosity of her band, The Faculty, featured "Title Track", a song that would feature on Later... With Jools Holland. The ambitious follow-up, Love Songs (2012) wowed critics and peers alike, with the Guardian calling it, "...one of the best albums of the year." Featuring twenty-seven musicians performing live, the double album, adorned with strings, horns, and glorious harmonies, was re-released as a vinyl collector edition to celebrate its fifth anniversary. Presently, we bask in the glow of her latest offering, Three the Hard Way. Recorded in France, the raw, charged selection showcases Warren on drums, bass, piano, guitar, and lap steel. Co-produced with long time friend, Ben Kane, (D'Angelo, PJ Morton, Cece Winans), Three the Hard Way finds Krystle revisi... (read more)

Andy Suzuki & The Method (Record Release Show!) - Mercury Lounge
February 13, 2019 - New York

Age Limit: 16 and Over Brooklyn's Andy Suzuki and Kozza Olatunji-Babumba (of Andy Suzuki & The Method) have been making music together for nearly a decade, but now with their third full-length album, The Glass Hour, a creative friendship has flowered into a formidable musical force. The pair first garnered wider attention with their buoyant, organic folk-pop album, Born out of Mischief, and soon found themselves opening for names as large as Ringo Starr, Eric Hutchinson, Joshua Radin, Marc Broussard, Delta Rae, and Tyrone Wells. Fans fell hard for their combination of a "velvet voice" (NPR) and their "deadly way with melody" (TimeOut New York). Their sinuous songwriting, which curves into eddies and unexpected shapes at every measure, is steadied by Andy's impossibly dulcet vocals, that carry us gently through as the songs toss and heave. The Glass Hour keeps all these curves and fleecy vocals, but no longer wants the limits of the folkpop label. Instead, Andy and Kozza are aiming for nearly every place on your radio dial.

Tredici Bacci (Record Release Show) - Mercury Lounge
February 14, 2019 - New York

Jazzboy Age Limit: 21 and Over Tredici Bacci was formed by composer Simon Hanes in the spring of 2013 as a vehicle to bring his unique musical vision to the stage, and to seduce the ears and minds of the boston underground music scene. The instrumentation of female vocals, string quartet, horns, accordion and rhythm section is specifically designed to capture the musical qualities of Hanes' initial inspiration - the music of italian films from the 1960s-70s. From giallo to spaghetti-western, Morricone to Rota to Cipriani, Hanes has made it his duty to absorb it all, and allow it to inform his original, very personal compositions. Since its impetus, Tredici Bacci has played extensively throughout the northeast, performing in bars, galleries, warehouses and concert halls, leaving a trail of Campari bottles, confetti, and whipped cream in their wake. Each performance is a celebration - the audience revels as the band deftly performs is technically demanding and cinematic music. To date, TB has released two records - "The Thirteen Kisses EP" from 2013 and "Vai! Vai! Va! (Musica dal filmato originale)" from 2014.

Dan Owen - Mercury Lounge
February 14, 2019 - New York

Hegazy Age Limit: 16 and Over In terms of rock'n'roll tales, Dan Owen has had a head start on most musicians his age. The 25 year old has earned his success the fun, old-fashioned way. He started out playing every pub that would have him and honed his craft with old bluesmen who gave him his own nickname. He has gone from performing for politicians at Westminster to partying in Nashville with Willie Nelson. This Shropshire boy with the big blues voice has a wealth of stories to share. Dan didn't grow up dreaming of becoming a musician. Despite discovering that he could silence a room by singing blues covers at the age of 15. He thought he had found his calling in carpentry when he took an apprenticeship and, for once, came top of the class. Dan's dream of building guitars was due to come true when he was offered a placement with the world-famous guitar maker Patrick James Eggle but, just before taking it up, he suffered a horrific injury in the workshop that all but blinded him in one eye. After months of recuperation and daily hospital visits and battling post-traumatic stress, Dan tried returning to carpentry, but his impaired vision made it impossible. Even playing live had be... Robbers On High Street, The Realistics - Mercury Lounge
February 15, 2019 - New York

Age Limit: 21 and Over The Realistics, NYC's best-kept secret, reunite after 15 years to join the Mercury Lounge in celebrating the venue's 25th anniversary In the early 2000s, The Realistics were instrumental in reviving NYC's reputation as a hotbed of new and exciting music. Their Mercury Lounge shows with Robbers on High Street, Radio 4, Longwave, The Mooney Suzuki, and a burgeoning young band called The Strokes, are the stuff of legend. The Realistics' are bringing back their signature swagger, infectious songs and powerful, bombastic performances — think Elvis Costello + The Who + The Clash — to help the Mercury Lounge celebrate its 25th anniversary. For a time, The Realistics were everywhere. In Levi's ads, on the cover of Fader Magazine, on stage with Buzzcocks and Joe Strummer, on tour with The Strokes, Peter, Bjorn & John and Blondie. They toured endlessly, spreading the gospel of high-energy rock and roll, leaving legions of fans and newly forming bands in their wake. Then they were gone. Their last show was headlining the Joe Strummer memorial concert at Irving Plaza, December 22, 2003. Reunion invitations came and went. But in December 2018, almost 15 years to the day,... The Great American Soul Book will feature songs written by the likes of Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Bob Dylan. Jazz standards will preside alongside popular songs laced with gospel infusion and ballads that morph into funk excursions all anchored by the organ trio.
