September 10, 2017 - New York

Circadian Clock is a 5 piece rock band formed in 2008. The seemingly mismatched group of strangers come together to make some seriously strange music, and they prefer it that way. The unique blend of many different styles of music make it difficult to pinpoint them under one genre, but they promise you'll enjoy the ride between Rock, Pop, Punk, Jazz, Classical and everything else. Intimate experimental rock from Northampton, MA Solo project of Brooklyn-based musician, Jeff Patlingrao. ORCA AGE CREATES GUITAR-DRIVEN MUSIC THAT OSCILLATES BETWEEN A QUIET MELODIC SINCERITY AND BLISTERING FRENETICISM. THE RESULT IS A KIND OF IDIOSYNCRATIC ROCK MAJESTY. THE SONGS ARE INTRICATE YET ACCESSIBLE; DISARMING, ANTHEMIC, AND WILD...

Big Thief - Music Hall of Williamsburg
September 11, 2017 - Brooklyn

The trails that Brooklyn's Big Thief—Adrianne Lenker (guitar, vocals), Buck Meek (guitar), Max Oleartchik (bass), and James Krivchenia (drums)—take us down on Capacity, the band's highly anticipated second record, are overgrown with the wilderness of pumping souls. After last year's stunning Masterpiece, Capacity was recorded in a snowy winter nest in upstate New York at Outlier Studio with producer Andrew Sarlo. The album jumps right into lives marked up and nipped in surprisingly swift fashion. They are peopled and unpeopled, spooked and soothed, regenerating back into a state where they can once again be vulnerable. Lenker's songs introduce us to a gallery of multifacted women and deal with the complicated matters of identity — at once dangerous and curious, though never unbelievable. Lenker shows us the gentle side of being ripped open. Tricked into love, done in and then witnessing the second act of pulling oneself back together to prepare for it to all happen again, but this time to a sturdier soul, one who is going to take the punches better than ever before and deal some jabs and roundhouses of their own.

September 12, 2017 - New York

The Bright Light Social Hour Questions bring art to life. Songs can still ponder socio-political issues, the fragility and isolation of the human condition, and what lies ahead for earth. Moreover, music possesses the potential and gravitas to incite change, while reflecting the world's faults and follies. The Bright Light Social Hour contemplate a "Future South" on their second full-length album, Space Is Still the Place [Frenchkiss Records]. The Austin artists

Peggy Lee Septet: Tell Tale - Roulette
September 13, 2017 - Brooklyn

Tell Tale was a project conceived in 2009 as a musical response to writer / creator David Milch's HBO series, Deadwood. Forming an ensemble of improvisers from Vancouver's deep and varied creative music community, Peggy Lee likened the players to characters in a story and wanted to give them each a chance to voice their individual ideas in unaccompanied solos and in small ensembles within the framework of a musical suite. The seven composed sections of the music imply the arc of a story but they are also intended as launching pads for the players to then make extended improvised statements that take the listener on a journey that is never the same twice.

Joseph - Music Hall of Williamsburg
September 15, 2017 - Brooklyn

I'M ALONE, NO YOU'RE NOT There is nothing like the sound of siblings singing together. Whether it's the Beach Boys or the Everly Brothers—or, more recently, First Aid Kit—absorbing the same breathing rhythms and speech patterns adds an element to vocal harmonies that can be pure magic. With the release of I'm Alone, No You're Not, the mesmerizing, hypnotic sound of the trio known as Joseph—made up of sisters Allison, Meegan, and Natalie Closner—joins this elite company. "It's just second nature, like a fifth limb that's already on you," says first-born Natalie. "There's an ability to anticipate what's going to happen and blend with it. When Meegan and Allison sing, they know exactly what I'm going to do and when." But the Closners didn't actually start singing together when they were growing up in Oregon, the children of artistic parents (their dad was a jazz singer and drummer, their mom a theater teacher). Natalie was the performer—"the older sister who stood on the edge of the fireplace and told everyone, 'Watch me!,'" she says. Twins Meegan and Allison stayed out of her lane, joining in for their mother's musical theater productions but otherwise avoiding the spotlight... (read more)

The Afghan Whigs+Har Mar Superstar - Brooklyn Steel
September 16, 2017 - New York

"Cleromancy" isn't a word one normally finds in rock lyrics. Then again, In Spades – the forthcoming album by The Afghan Whigs, from which the new song "Oriole" hails – is defined only by its own mystical inner logic. The term means to divine, in a supernatural manner, a prediction of destiny from the random casting of lots: the throwing of dice, picking a card from a deck. From its evocative cover art to the troubled spirits haunting the words, In Spades casts a spell that challenges the listener to unpack its dark metaphors and spectral imagery. "It's a spooky record," notes Greg Dulli, Afghan Whigs' songwriter and frontman. "I like that it's veiled. It's not a concept album per se, but as I began to assemble it, I saw an arc and followed it. To me it's about memory – in particular, how quickly life and memory can blur together." On the one hand, In Spades is as quintessentially Afghan Whigs as anything the group has ever done – fulfilling its original mandate to explore the missing link between howling Midwestern punk like Die Kreuzen and Hüsker Dü, The Temptations' psychedelic soul symphonies, and the expansive hard rock tapestries of Led Zeppelin and Lynyrd Skynyrd. At the ... (read more)

Middle Kids - Music Hall of Williamsburg
September 16, 2017 - Brooklyn

Twenty-plus years of stories, twenty-plus years of perfecting music's craft, Ski Lodge's Big Heart is exactly what a debut record should be: the culmination of a creative force's life on this planet. Andrew Marr, the multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter behind Ski Lodge, has created a deeply personal record that overflows with lush melodies and insatiably catchy choruses. His songs occasionally deal with dark matters—infidelity, painful break-ups, loneliness, disjointed father-son dynamics—but Marr bathes them in a blissful light ripe for sing-alongs. "I try to write songs honestly, and a lot of the things going on in my head that I struggle with might be deemed 'dark,' but I don't think that means I can't sing about them in a way that is musically upbeat or poppy," Marr says, from his home in New York City. It's a dichotomy that also translates to Marr's choice for musical moniker. He explains the name Ski Lodge "evoked an image of being warm by a fire, alone or with friends, while outside exists the cold and cruel winter."

David Liebe Hart, Matthew Silver, Yucky Duster, the Johns - Sunnyvale
September 17, 2017 - New York

Known for his roles on Tim & Eric Awesome Show Great Job!, and extensive tours throughout the US, Canada and Australia, David Liebe Hart is an outsider musician, actor and painter. A true original, he has communicated with extra-terrestrials, owns a large collection of puppets, and is obsessed with trains. While his vast and bizarre catalog of songs about aliens, religion, and failed relationships has yielded cult hits, such as "Salame", "Father & Son" and "Puberty", his recent collaborations with electronic musician Jonah Mociun, AKA Th' Mole, have propelled Liebe Hart into previously unexplored territory. Matthew Silver Artist Statement: My role as a clown, trickster and village idiot is to parody excessive seriousness by playing with taboos, rules, and social norms. My inspiration comes from my heart. I perform for smiles and laughter, loosening people's armor, and opening up a portal for imagination, creativity and love. Yucky Duster Maggie and Madeline started Yucky Duster with the idea to play fun, 60s- and punk-inspired tunes with only two instruments—Maggie on bass and Madeline on drums. They eventually added Luca Balser (The Gradients / Gummy), and, months later, Z... (read more)

Dermot Kennedy - Music Hall of Williamsburg
September 17, 2017 - Brooklyn

Life and death. Joy and pain. Love and loss. Dermot Kennedy has always been fascinated by extremes. On his brilliant debut EP, 'Doves & Ravens,' the young Dubliner draws inspiration from all the moments of brightness and darkness this world has to offer, crafting music that's at once soaring and intimate, stripped-back and explosive. Stuttery hip-hop and R&B-influenced percussion underpins his weathered vocals as he combines organic and electronic elements into an arresting, emotional blend that calls to mind the adventurous arrangements of Bon Iver, James Blake, and James Vincent McMorrow. Rich beyond just its production, the EP showcases Kennedy as a writer in possession of a sophistication well beyond his 25 years. He pens lyrics with a poet's eye and a rapper's precision, conjuring vivid imagery and transfixing audiences with the unique rhythm and flow of his soulful delivery. "I think reading poetry and listening to hip hop offer a lot of the same rewards," reflects Kennedy. "The good rappers are so honest, and in my opinion they deserve to be viewed as poets. Regardless of the form, though, I just feed off of anyone who's expressing themselves and sharing their feelings... (read more)
