February 12, 2018 - Brooklyn

Glen David Andrews is on a mission. The trombonist, singer and showman, who hails from an extended family of musicians in New Orleans' culturally rich Treme neighborhood, introduced himself to a national, and international, audience with the acclaimed 2014 album "Redemption." Always eager to be more than a hometown hero, he is ready to fully realize that ambition, to build on the platform/pulpit that "Redemption" gave him. From an early age, he reveled in the sounds of second-line parades and church choirs; his cousins populated several New Orleans brass bands. Trouble occasionally found him, and vice versa.

Armed with a trombone, Glen soon found himself gigging with the New Birth and Lil' Rascals brass bands. KIDinaKORNER/Interscope band X Ambassadors' debut album VHS reflected on the events that shaped lead vocalist and lyricist Sam Harris and his older brother, keyboardist Casey Harris' life growing up in Ithaca, NY. The gold-certified album, which Rolling Stone called "bombastic rock that's as stomping as it is diaristic, leavened by big-tent pop hooks and a hint of hip-hop swagger," debuted at No. 7 on Billboard's Top 200 chart and spawned the platinum-selling "Renegades," which spent 12 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Alternative chart, and the double-platinum "Unsteady." The success of VHS sent X Ambassadors on a nearly two-year touring odyssey that found them winning over fans around the world and performing at the Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Life is Beautiful, and Shaky Knees festivals, among others, and establishing themselves as a world-class rock band. X Ambassadors recently released the impassioned "Ahead of Myself," the first single off their forthcoming sophomore set. X Ambassadors returned to Ithaca this fall to co-headline their inaugural Cayuga Sound Festival with The Roots, giving back to the community that nurtured their talent.

Two Feet, Absofacto - Music Hall of Williamsburg
February 16, 2018 - Brooklyn

At 3am in the morning and 3 or so beers deep, New York based artist Two Feet sat restlessly on his friend's couch, The same couch that had also been serving as his bed for the last few months, in an apartment in Harlem. He was putting the final touches on a song he had written earlier that day -- unapologetically titled "Go Fuck Yourself," the track was written in a three hour blur and he hadn't given too much thought too until he had sent it to a handful of friends who said differently. Switching the track to public on soundcloud, Two Feet closed his laptop and let the liquor take him to sleep. By the time he woke up in the morning, "Go Fuck Yourself" had garnered thousands of streams and his inbox was ringing with messages from new fans and prospective labels. 5 months on and Two Feet aka Bill something is reflecting on his debut EP -- the appropriately titled, "First Steps." Independently released, the EP is a collection of 4 songs born out of frustration and a knee-jerk reaction to other projects he had been working. Juice, Joe Hertler & The Rainbow Seekers, Ian Kieffer - Knitting Factory
February 17, 2018 - Brooklyn

Joe Hertler & The Rainbow Seekers will make a sprightly young groove doctor out of anyone. With spectacular energy pulsating from every member of the band, the Rainbow Seekers could illuminate the very chambers of Heaven. Lead singer Joe Hertler splashes through lyrical puddles of golden rain, leaving his audience wearing flowery crowns and bubbling smiles. A ride on the Rainbow will take you across the mountains of Motown, through the fjords of folk, over the archipelagos of Americana, and—at last—into a funky firth, where only the fiercest of friendships can be found. The Rainbow Seekers began their quest beneath the fingertips of songwriter Joe Hertler. Bassist and producer Kevin Pritchard, recently thawed from an extremely rare prehistoric groove glacier, discovered the forlorn Hertler in a twinkling, mysteriously fortuitous place called The Quilted Attic. Alongside legendary glacier-hunter Rick Hale—who would later spend decades forging a drum set from pure, white-hot, ancient stardust to mark the occasion—Pritchard changed the world: He wrangled Hertler into musical collaboration. And the lonely little songsmith, it turned out, was not quite as alone as he seemed: Wit... (read more)

The XXIVth HOUR: A Song of Ice & Fire & Fury - Silent Barn
February 17, 2018 - New York

Come gather, ye damnéd souls. Hark. Fucking HARK, my pretties! The XXIVth Hour RETURNS FROM THE DEPTHS OF HADES TO OBLITERATE YOUR SOUL...WITH...THEATER?!?? What started as a series of Julia Child's early cooking recipes has evolved through the centuries into the most entertaining, deliberately chaotic theater festival in all of this great city and this very bad country! We write plays for you on Friday night, because we are NICE and also LONELY, and then rehearse and perform those plays for you the very next day! Again because we are SO VERY LONELY. That means you could be in for ANYTHING! A formulaic frat comedy about two competing cults, or a Mean Girls-style clique of young women trying to fuck their dads (??!?!?), or perhaps the story of a high school power couple learning life lessons from a polyamorous Australian(-ish) exchange student. HATE THOSE EXAMPLES? SAME. BUT ON THE BRIGHT SIDE, WE ALREADY DID THEM SO YOU WILL NOT HAVE TO SEE THEM. So brave the cold this February 17th at the magnificent Silent Barn, and we will warm you with LAUGHTER! And alcohol that will help more probably. Enjoy the show that Fictional Detective Marvin Gardens once called: "What is this i... (read more)

Ltj Bukem (Extended Dj Set) - Brooklyn Bowl
February 17, 2018 - Brooklyn

Just who is LTJ Bukem? Ground breaking DJ? Inspirational musician? Record label entrepreneur? Club visionary, perhaps? When the man behind those wire rimmed glasses and that disarming smile writes his job description just what does he put? The man who took the drum and bass concept from a small venue off London's Charing Cross Road to the nation's superclubs and then onto the international stage? The geezer whose records launched breakbeat into a brand new galaxy of sound? Or maybe he just writes 'Renaissance man for a digital age'. In truth LTJ Bukem is all of the above. Although he wouldn't like to admit it, LTJ Bukem is the living embodiment of the post-acid house entrepreneurial creative spirit. He is a mild mannered energy flash whose panoramic musical vision has found success in every area he has explored. From running sound systems to cutting up breaks at raves, from relocating the heart of breakbeat culture to redefining the spirit of drum and bass, the man known to his friends as Danny Williamson has sat at the forefront of breakbeat evolution, lighting the way with little more than a zest for life and a love of music. In other words, LTJ Bukem is a man on a mission! Bu... (read more)

Galactic - Brooklyn Steel
February 17, 2018 - Brooklyn

It's been more than 20 years since Ben Ellman, Robert Mercurio, Stanton Moore, Jeff Raines and Rich Vogel began exploring the seemingly limitless musical possibilities born out of their work together as Galactic. Since then, the seminal New Orleans band has consistently pushed artistic boundaries on the road and in the studio, approaching their music with open ears and drawing inspiration as much from the sounds bubbling up from their city's streets as they do from each other. A key part of that creative spark comes from the teamwork of Mercurio and Ellman, whose ever-evolving production and arranging skills helped usher the band into a new phase of studio work beginning with the loop-centric "Ruckus" in 2007. A series of albums focused around specific concepts like Carnival followed, as did collaborations with guests hailing from worlds outside the one Galactic calls its own. On "Into the Deep," the band members look within themselves instead, drawing inspiration from people and ideas that have long been close to their hearts – and, in turn, close to the development of their unique sound. Shot through with soul, funk, blues and rock, the result is an organic riff on elements... (read more)

Now, Now, Mothers - Music Hall of Williamsburg
February 17, 2018 - Brooklyn

Doors 8:00 pm Show 9:00 pm Now, Now With the release of "SGL", Now, Now emerge from a transformative and transitional few years since their last shows played in support of Threads. Much has changed, with the mutual and amicable departure of guitarist Jess Abbott to pursue a different creative direction through her work as Tancred being the most visibly apparent difference. That parting of ways is only a fraction of the story however. Below the surface lay challenges, struggle, and a lot of growth for KC Dalager and Brad Hale as people, musicians, and songwriters. And while as a duo they find themselves back to the same binary dynamic they started with over a decade ago, they couldn't be further from who they were when two friends who met at marching band practice and started making music together in a basement. As they wrapped up nearly three years of writing, recording, and then touring in support of Threads, KC and Brad were mentally and emotionally worn out. "We couldn't find a way to recharge ourselves creatively," recalls KC, and that lead to a feedback loop of writer's block and self-doubt. And so they took a step back, focusing their energy on songwriting and producin... (read more)

Tainted Love - 80's Dance Party with Dj Jane Elizabeth - February Edition! - The Bell House
February 17, 2018 - Brooklyn

Soft Cell's pioneering 1981 cover of the Northern Soul classic, "Tainted Love," is the inspiration for this awesome 80s dance party. Building on a solid foundation of New Wave, we'll dig deeper into the catalog of massive hits and overlooked misses from the late 70s through the early 90s - pivotal years in musical history that blurred the lines between Analog and Digital, Disco and Synthpop, Funk and Hip-Hop. A time when Alternative was called Post-Punk, Indie actually meant independent, and Throbbing Gristle's "Hot on the Heels of Love" surely could have been alongside Blondie's "Heart of Glass" on the charts...with today's perspective. Other passions include CBGB-era New York, Batcave-era London - Punk Rock, Glam Rock, Kraut Rock, Girl Rock, Dad Rock, Rockabilly, Ska, Machine Soul, Blue-Eyed Soul, Darkwave, Coldwave - plus some guilty pleasures in the (strictly) Old-School Rap department.

The Goddess (1934) is one of the most powerful silent films of all time and an early high point for Chinese cinema. Min's score references numerous genres, including Tibetan Buddhist chants, and seeks to traverse existing cultural and musical boundaries by creating a new work filled with deep and soulful musical expression. Hailed by The New York Times as a "fearless practitioner of the pipa" and by the Village Voice as an artist who "has taken her ancient Chinese string instrument into the future," Min Xiao-Fen was also the first Chinese artist invited by Lincoln Center to perform the work of legendary jazz pianist Thelonious Monk.
