Lincoln Center Out of Doors Returns

Lincoln Center Out of Doors, one of the country’s longest-running, free, summer outdoor festivals opened its 45th season last night on July 22 with an incredible show featuring The Muscle Shoals All-Stars, the legendary session musicians who, beginning in the 1960s and continuing to today, put a small town in Alabama on the map as one of the greatest recording capitals in the world. The Swampers David Hood and Jimmy Johnson of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section were joined by the Muscle Shoals Horns, and special guest singers Patterson Hood, Bettye LaVette, Sam Moore, and Dan Penn for an evening celebrating 50 years of defining American music. Opening the night were two other powerhouse musicians, Donnie Fritts and John Paul White who brought a gritty, beautiful lonesome-barroom feel to the beautiful outdoor plaza. But by the end of the evening, the whole place was rocking.

The festival will continue to offer a range of free concerts, dance performances, family events, related film screenings, talks, and an exhibition through August 9.

Guatemalan jazz singer Gaby Moreno is one of the many artists participating in Lincoln Center Out of Doors.

More Week 1 performance highlights include: Randy Newman (July 25), Judy Collins (July 26); Bostich + Fussible (July 23); Gaby Moreno (July 24); Dorrance Dance: “The Blues Project” with Toshi Reagon and BIGLovely (July 24); Family Day (July 25); National Dance Day with audience participation (July 25); and Lil Buck (July 25).
