King Kong has made his way back to New York, the city he once terrorized (at least in the movie!), but this time, it's in wax form. The famed Madame Tussauds New York in Times Square welcomes a wax replica of King Kong’s head to its collection, providing visitors not only with a perfect photo op with the notorious gorilla, but an entire KONG: Skull Island experience. If you’re a fan of the new film, then you’re definitely going to be a fan of Madame Tussauds. Start planning your visit today!

The Experience

Visitors to Madame Tussauds can expect quite the experience, including a journey through bamboo, vines, and forest as they go in search of the famed King Kong. You’ll even encounter Mother Longlegs and her spider traps as you make your way deeper into Skull Island’s terrain. Along the way, the heroic Captain James Conrad (as played by Tom Hiddleston) will be present in wax form. When you finally come upon the one and only Kong, his lifelike presence may shock you. Not only will King Kong be made in the form of a lifelike wax replica, but he’ll be a fully-functioning animatronic head that visitors can come face-to-face with during their visit. Yipes!

King Kong

Towering at eighteen feet high, King Kong’s enormous animatronic head is a first for Madame Tussauds. The beast is true to the film’s scale and it will be moving, grunting, shorting, and roaring as guests approach it. His movements and sounds will be so powerful, in fact, that visitors will sense the power behind this replica with every step through the jungle towards its direction. Using state-of-the-art pneumatic controls that were designed specifically for this creation, King Kong’s flow of air is controlled my precise technology to help fabricate its shockingly lifelike face movements and breathing simulation.

Madame Tussauds's King Kong head was made by a team of 33 artists over the course of 72 days, making it one of the largest scale projects ever completed by the iconic wax museum. The head weighs over 3,000 lbs and uses over 350 square feet of faux hair. Even the painting process was extensive, taking close to four weeks to complete. The head uses over 1,000 bolts, has a roar that is 90dB (matching the sound of a Boeing 737 during landing), and 240 PSI of high pressure air release in four seconds for each roar. Simply put, Madame Tussauds’ King Kong head isn’t just something extraordinary to look at—it’s an entire experience all on its own.
