Indecent Exposure: Catch This Powerful Broadway Show While You Still Can

Exquisite. Evocative. Heartwarming and heartbreaking. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel has given Broadway theatregoers the season’s most haunting production: Indecent.

Unlike any show in recent memory, theatre lover protests managed to bump Indecent’s announced closing date from June 25th to August 6th.  Unfortunately, the extension finale is inching up fast and along with your chance to seeor re-seea show that brings to life an important sliver of real-life Broadway history. Gone will be a beautifully staged production by this year’s Tony-winning Best Director of a Play, Rebecca Taichman, and featuring a stellar cast.

As for the production itself, Vogel’s “play with music” corrals a cyclone of emotions as it homes in on author Sholem Asch’s drama God of Vengeanceand its journey from incubation in 1906 Warsaw to a March 6, 1923 New York City arrest of the Broadway company on obscenity charges to WWII…and beyond.

The shock value of the play-within-a-play comes when two women kiss in the rain, and it is this scene that propels the action and humanity so prevalent in Indecent. It is also the touchstone that draws the audience to the highs, lows, humor, and drama of the show from its early moments…

"My name is Lemml; You can also call me Lou. I’m the stage manager tonight—usually you can find me backstage. We have a story we want to tell you...About a play. A play that changed my life. Every night we tell this story—but somehow I can never remember the end…I can remember how it begins…"

…to its passionate conclusion. Which I will not divulge. No, not a single spoiler.

Just see it. It is Broadway at its most ardent and beautiful…and it will soon be gone. As the show reiterates, it’s “a blink in time.”
