Kids Eat History: The Story of School Lunch - Museum at Eldridge Street
May 19, 2019 - New York

Bring your appetite to this interactive program that explores the history of school lunches in New York City public schools and its impact on the kids of the Lower East Side – at the very place where it all began, the Henry Street Settlement. At the turn of the 20th century, Henry Street's Lillian Wald was one of the most vocal advocates of feeding the city's poor immigrant children a nutritious lunch at school. Like other Progressive Era activists, she believed children would learn better if they weren't hungry. It sounds elementary today, but in Wald's time, it was a radical idea. And what might seem radical to us today are the foods on those early school lunch menus! (Boiled peas in a cone, anyone?) Picky eaters, prepare, because you'll have a chance to taste some of those early school lunch menus This program is offered at the Henry Street Settlement.
