Commemorate History's Most Famous Kiss

The madness of World War II was over and history was made. In NYC, smack dab in the middle of Times Square, a sailor swept a nurse into a passionate kiss and history was made...sweeter.

To commemorate the 70th anniversary of history's most famous kiss, THE RIDE will be renacting THE KISS during the week of Aug. 10-16. Two of THE RIDE's most celebrated cast members are the two actors that recreate Alfred Eisenstaedt’s iconic photo of the euphoric embrace between the sailor and nurse minutes after the announcement of the end of World War II Aug. 14, 1945.

“In Times Square on V.J. Day I saw a sailor running along the street grabbing any and every girl in sight. Whether she was a grandmother, stout, thin, old, didn't make a difference.  I was running ahead of him with my Leica looking back over my shoulder but none of the pictures that were possible pleased me. Then suddenly, in a flash, I saw something white being grabbed.  I turned around and clicked the moment the sailor kissed the nurse. If she had been dressed in a dark dress I would never have taken the picture.  If the sailor had worn a white uniform, the same. I took exactly four pictures. It was done within a few seconds.  Only one is right, on account of the balance.  In the others the emphasis is wrong — the sailor on the left side is either too small or too tall.  People tell me that when I am in heaven they will remember this picture.”

The magical moment is always met with wild applause from THE RIDE’S audience who are delivered the past, present and future of New York City while sitting in a climate controlled floor-to-ceiling-glass-enclosed multi-million dollar motor coach as the streets of Manhattan become the stage for the most talked about immersive event in town.

Originally shot by Mr. Eisenstaedt on August 14, 1945, THE KISS is still as electrifying as it was 70 years ago when it happened, was recorded and then published in Life magazine a week later.

About to begin its sixth season and received for its fifth consecutive year the 2015 Certificate of Exellence from TripAdvisor, THE RIDE is produced and directed by CEO/CCO, RICHARD HUMPHREY, who is spearheading the search for THE RIDE’S next three cities with San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Boston, London, Tokyo and Singapore in the running. Meanwhile, THE RIDE in New York is currently awaiting its 350,000th RIDER who is just “a kiss away.”
