Stanley Clarke Band - Blue Note
Through November 19, 2017 - New York

Bassist Stanley Clarke was barely out of his teens when he exploded into the jazz world in 1971. Fresh out of the Philadelphia Academy of Music, he arrived in New York City and immediately landed jobs with famous bandleaders such as Horace Silver, Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, Joe Henderson, Pharaoh Saunders, Gil Evans, Stan Getz and a budding young pianist-composer named Chick Corea. All of these musicians immediately recognized Clarke's ferocious dexterity and complete musicality on the acoustic bass. Not only was he an expert at crafting bass lines and functioning as a timekeeper – in keeping with his instrument's traditional role – but the young prodigy also possessed a sense of lyricism and melody distilled from his bass heroes Charles Mingus, Scott LaFaro and others, as well as non-bass players like John Coltrane. Clarke envisioned the bass as a viable, melodic solo instrument positioned at the front of the stage rather than in a background role, and he was uniquely qualified to take it there. The vision became a reality when Clarke and Corea formed the seminal electric jazz/fusion band Return To Forever. RTF was a showcase for each of the quartet's strong musical p... (read more)

Kandace Springs (Late Show) - City Winery
November 20, 2017 - New York

KANDACE SPRINGS Every so often a new singer emerges who's able to assimilate multiple musical touchstones and still come off sounding remarkably fresh and unburdened by the past. Kandace Springs is one of those artists. The 27-year-old, Nashville-based singer, songwriter and pianist counts such stylists as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Roberta Flack and Norah Jones as her heroes, but as evidenced by her sparkling full-length Blue Note Records debut, Soul Eyes, Springs mimics none of them. Instead Springs allows her comely alto to become a conduit that touches upon soul, jazz and pop while transforming those aforementioned influences into a personalized sound that reveals itself effortlessly. "The artists who have inspired me the most all sang so naturally," Springs says. "That helped me find my own sound." Springs' journey to discovering her uniqueness didn't happen overnight. In fact, her 2014 self-titled debut EP had a decidedly contemporary R&B/hip-hop bent with production by Pop & Oak (Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Miguel). The EP was incredibly well-received and led to TV performances on Late Show With David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel Live and The Tonight Show St... (read more)

Marking its 13th consecutive year, the annual Maria Schneider Orchestra Thanksgiving residency returns to our stage. For more than two decades, beginning with her orchestra's debut album Evanescence (1994), Schneider has developed a deeply personal way of writing for her 17–member collective. Like Duke Ellington, she has tailored her compositions to highlight the individually expressive voices of her soloists. Schneider and her orchestra have established a distinguished recording career including four GRAMMY Awards. In February 2016, Schneider won for Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocal for the track "Sue (Or in a Season of Crime)" recorded by the Maria Schneider Orchestra and David Bowie; and for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album for her album The Thompson Fields. Come and join us in our annual celebration of our generation's greatest composer/arranger. "As with Pat Metheny and Bill Frisell, and not infrequently Aaron Copland, too, Schneider's music is about a more innocent and unconflicted America, still hoping that humanity might one day get into the kind of harmony with itself and its environment that she hears in her head." Released to critical acclaim, The Epic won numerous "best of" awards, including the American Music Prize and the Gilles Peterson Worldwide album of the year. Washington followed that work with collaborations with other influential artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Run the Jewels, Ibeyi, and John Legend, and the creation of "Harmony of Difference," a standalone multimedia installation during the 2017 Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. The fulfillment of Washington's destiny begin when at age 13, Washington picked up his musician father's horn and proceeded to play the Wayne Shorter composition "Sleeping Dancer Sleep On" despite never touching a saxophone... Julian Fleisher - Joe's Pub at the Public at Theater
Through December 12, 2017 - New York

Before the art of song was divided into narrow stylistic slices, before there was Jazz or Pop or Rock, there was Nightclub Singing. Like Sammy Davis, Jr, Ethel Water and Mel Tormé before him, Julian Fleisher mixes masterful interpretations of a wide range of popular songs with kick-ass showmanship and a generously endowed band that -- as the Washington Post put it -- "blew the roof off of Joe's Pub. "I have seen the future of vocal Jazz! He's got a marvelous, resonate baritone, with impeccable intonation, and a wonderful choice of material...talented, funny and hip."- LA Jazz Scene, East/ West Connections

As she sits in the driver's seat, she faces a choice: will she follow in her mother's footsteps, or take the dare of her impetuous best friend and chart a new path? This contemporary and compelling score from one of NYC's most exciting new songwriting teams immerses audiences in the complex inner life of a young woman on the brink of change. When every choice feels like life and death, how do you turn the key?
