The experience of sound, both on it's own and in performance, can be intense, personal, and physically effective.

Red Molly - Landmark on Main Street
June 16, 2019 - Port Washington

serious harmonizing chops and slick pop savvy" -Time Out NY Americana powerhouse trio Red Molly is known for their gorgeous harmonies, infectious songwriting, and captivating stage presence. Laurie MacAllister (bass), Abbie Gardner (Dobro), and Molly Venter (guitar) weave together the threads of American music -- from folk roots to bluegrass, from heartbreaking ballads to barn-burning honky tonk -- as effortlessly as they blend their caramel voices into their signature crystalline, three-part harmonies. If one word describes Red Molly's music, that word is joyous. Their brilliantly wrought a capella tunes are love letters to the art of the vocal blend, and their innovative instrumentation is perfectly suited for foot stomping bluegrass-tinged barnburners and heart-full ballads alike. Red Molly is simply a joy to listen to. One of the most moving things about Red Molly's music is the honest sense that you're watching three dear friends sharing songs in their living room. That synergy and harmony carries through on their newest studio effort, aptly titled The Red Album.

European Sound Series: Jean-Michel Pilc - France - Blue Note
June 17, 2019 - New York

Jean-Michel Pilc presented by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in New York "What I'm in search of is exceptions," jazz pianist Jean-Michel Pilc explains. His new live concert recording, Essential, due out May 10, 2011 on Motéma Music, intimately captures an exceptional series of improvisations on both brand-new and classic themes. While there are dazzling passages here that demand Pilc's formidable technique, there's also a striking simplicity, directness and an irrepressible passion. Blending vividly lyrical passages with otherworldly, reflective interludes, unexpected dissonances and playful digressions, it's a vivid display of the individuality that American audiences have come to expect since his arrival in New York in 1995. Of this recording, "It represents who I was that night," Pilc explains. "What I do is pure improvisation. Sometimes you play a concert and you don't feel like it's natural – this concert had the feeling that I have at home playing the piano, completely relaxed. This particular night, there was nothing of that 'live performance thing,' having to convince people, and squeeze things in. This was music being made for the sake of music. Everything h... Gaelic Storm at The Loft - The Loft at City Winery
June 18, 2019 - New York

It's hard to imagine a band just coming into their own after 20 years of success, but that's exactly what makes a true anomaly. This multi-national, Celtic juggernaut grows stronger with each live performance, and as you can imagine, after two decades and over 2000 shows, it is a true force to be reckoned with. With their latest release, Go Climb a Tree, their music has never sounded more representative of themselves as musicians and as live performers. The band attributes their continued success to their fanatic audience, and it's a well-diversified crowd for sure. The country-music folks adore the storytelling, the bluegrass-heads love the instrumentals, Celtic fans love their devotion to tradition, and the rockers simply relish the passion they play their instruments with. Each band member, in their own way, expresses a deep gratitude for their fans, but it's best summed up in the words of Patrick Murphy: "The fans are the ones that have given us this life. We're here for them."

Lucette at The Loft - The Loft at City Winery
June 18, 2019 - New York

On her sophomore album Deluxe Hotel Room, indie-pop artist Lucette turns her title phrase into a metaphor for experiences both highly specific and widely familiar: fleeting romance, emotional displacement, isolation, the gulf between the presumed glamour of the artist's life and the reality of getting by. Produced by Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Sturgill Simpson at The Butcher Shoppe in Nashville, Deluxe Hotel Room unfolds in endlessly contrasting layers of feeling. "A lot of joy and a lot of pain has happened for me in hotel rooms," says the Canadian artist otherwise known as Lauren Gillis. "I've stayed in hotel rooms I'd never be able to afford myself and, unfortunately, I've been put in extremely uncomfortable situations in hotel rooms. Also, hearing about a lot of the pain women in the entertainment industry have been through in hotel rooms urged me to write the title track to this album."

Tanbark *Record Release! - Union Pool

The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra - Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, Jazz at Lincoln Center
June 18, 2019 - New York

The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (SNJO) is one of Europe's foremost contemporary big bands. Founder and director Tommy Smith established the SNJO in 1995 as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting jazz as a pre-eminent art form through performances, original compositions, recordings, and educational outreach. The SNJO has shared the stage with renowned jazz artists such as Bill Evans, Joe Lovano, John Scofield, Gary Burton, Bobby Watson, Dave Liebman, Kurt Elling, Kenny Wheeler, Makoto Ozone, and more. Tonight, the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra invites you to enjoy new swinging big-band jazz interpretations of Prokofiev's popular classical work, Peter & the Wolf. The SNJO will be joined by leading Scots actor Tam Dean Burn to create a wildly vivid jazz version of Prokofiev's famous cautionary fable. Combining virtuosity and ingenuity with striking theatricality, it's a delightful collision between a folk tale and big-band swing with the music woven around expressive dialogue adapted by former Scots Makar (National Poet of Scotland) Liz Lochhead. Though full of fresh ideas, Smith's orchestration remains true to the composer's much-loved musical characterizations... (read more)

Tierra Del Fuego - Union Pool
June 19, 2019 - Brooklyn

21 and over Tierra del Fuego was born in the midst of a hot New York City summer, 2017. Travels and trips all came together in the form of songs, so it was that Elizabeth Hart (Psychic Ills) and Argentinean producer Iván Diaz Mathé (Nairobi) started collaborating. Recordings and shows have been giving shape to the story of the band, creating a true blend of cultures and styles. Devon Church - one half of the critically acclaimed duo, Exitmusic - makes lyric driven electro-psyche-folk with guitars, synths and a torn up baritone. Kyle Avallone makes dark and moody music. He's a minimalist, a noir crooner, soaked in 70's night club sleaze. His songs invite you into a world of red lights, empty streets, and desire.

Hyuna Park Trio - Birdland Jazz Club
June 20, 2019 - New York

Her Morning Waltz is the stunning debut album by jazz pianist Hyuna Park. From the first notes, the listener is drawn into the beautiful world of Park's music. It is an amazing world, complex at times, but always inviting. It reflects the rich colors of the jazz idiom as well as Park's personal connection with 19th century classical piano music and Korean folk music concepts. Park has developed her trio into a true extension of her own voice. Musical ideas flow seamlessly between the members of the band. The versatile drumming of Peter Traunmueller, the melodic bass playing of Myles Sloniker, and the captivating, virtuosic quality of her own performance is always in function of the greater musical goal.

Harlem Jazz Series - Carla Cook Quartet - Greater Calvary Baptist Church
June 21, 2019 - New York

Carla Cook is daring. She is a jazz singer/songwriter who sings standards beautifully - but she doesn't stop there. Cook is willing to put a jazz spin on songs not written by traditional jazz composers. Songs that, until you hear her sing them, you'd never imagine could be interpreted as jazz. This native Detroiter, who grew up in a musically rich and diverse environment, brings all her influences to bear within her repertoire. In her songbook you'll find elements of R&B, European classical, Motown, Blues and Gospel. Cook has always eschewed labels, and refuses to become a jazz purist or snob. That willingness to simply sing what she loves, bringing an earthy sophistication to every song, is what gives Cook her signature style. In 1999, Cook recorded her debut album; It's All About Love. The CD enjoyed favorable reviews and received a Grammy nomination in the Best Jazz Vocal Performance category and was awarded the AFIM Indie Award for Best Jazz Vocal in 2000. In 2000, Cook recorded her second album, Dem Bones and in 2002, she recorded Simply Natural, both for MAXJAZZ. Her albums continue to receive critical acclaim. Third album Portrait arrived on De Stijl in 2011, sporting a much clearer recording quality, as well as a dirge-like deconstruction of Bruce Springsteen's "I'm on Fire" recorded live. Fohr graduated college in 2012, and moved from Bloomington, Indiana to Chicago, where she began collaborating and performing with several artists in the city's vast music communities.
