Cell Phone Photography in NYC with B&H

It used to be a traveler’s ritual to carry a camera around the neck, along with a heavy case full of lenses. Video equipment was even more cumbersome to tote around while sightseeing. Today, even serious photographers just need a smartphone and a handful of accessories to generate lasting memories of their trip.

Most smartphone users snap photos and shoot videos, but few realize the potential of the camera they carry in their pocket. Cell phones enable everyone to make powerful visual statements—whether capturing personal moments, documenting events as they happen, or making art for its own sake. Best of all, the pictures and footage can be forwarded or posted instantly, so friends and family can share the experiences.

Photographer Steve Wewerka shot a Life Magazine cover with film, made the transition to digital SLR photography, and now uses an iPhone to create award-winning images. He has swapped his bulky camera bag for a handful of small accessories—most of them purchased at B&H. The famous New York City store has been the photographer’s best friend for more than 40 years; always offering the newest technology as well as the traditional. Today, cell phone photography is one of B&H's most popular departments, both in-store and online.

“Smartphone cameras are smaller, lighter, and easier to use,” says Steve. “They utilize software to boost the size and quality of the images. They are different, but not inferior, to traditional cameras. By using accessories and apps, you can capture extraordinary visuals and modify them in many different ways.”

The iPhone has become the most popular camera in the world, and many cell phone photography products are designed for them. If you carry an Android, there are still plenty of options, but not all accessories are interchangeable.

So what are the essentials to take your photos and videos to the next level?  Steve identified some must-haves that will expand the capabilities of the built-in camera. All can be found at B&H.

Cell Phone Photography: Lenses

Clip on lenses can dramatically up your game when it comes to cell phone photography. You can magnify images with a telephoto, shoot extreme close-ups with a macro lens, or expand your field of view with a wide-angle or fisheye. Steve likes the Schneider Optics iPro series for iPhone, which are on the high end pricewise, but still don’t exceed $100 each. Lensbaby offers a kit with three different focal lengths in a tin case for just $119.

Cell Phone Photography: Tripod and Adapter

If you already own a tripod, a mount to hold your smartphone will cost less than a subway ride. If not, there are a number of clever, inexpensive tripods designed for cell phone photography. No more rigid legs and clumsy set up with these portable, flexible models, such as the Joby GripTight Mount.

Cell Phone Photography: Selfie Stick

Technically known as “extension rigs,” these extendable poles are also a way to change the perspective of your images, says Steve. You can gain height or distance from a subject without sacrificing stability. And of course, take cool pictures of yourself walking through a destination like Madame Tussauds New York.

Cell Phone Photography: Cases

Never underestimate the likelihood of dropping your phone, especially when reaching for an amazing shot. A sturdy, safe case will protect your phone and prevent replacement headaches while on the road.

Cell phones have also revolutionized underwater photography. With a tough waterproof case like the I-Torch iPix A4, you’ll be ready to grab some dramatic footage of any great white sharks patrolling Long Island this summer.

Cell Phone Photography: Backup Battery & Bluetooth Memory Stick

What could be worse than running out of battery when you reach the Top of the Rock and want to shoot the amazing views? Just one thing: running out of memory. Steve carries at least one backup battery and a Bluetooth Memory Stick to download images as he goes.
